All Josh could do was smile, even grin, at Victor's assessment of Z-Moves in this context. The student's imagination was right on the money; the Z-Move the Leader had developed let Pokémon do precisely that. The very first time he rode Saber in the middle of his Z-Move was thrilling and exhausting unlike anything he had experienced up to that point.

As Din's running stroke transitioned from trot to canter to gallop, the grass-type showing her true colors, Josh had Raiden match their pace. He held back to watch Victor's posture. Leaning into the wind was wonderful. He could tell both of them were having a lot of fun, hair being blown around with the speed they were getting to. Even through the downhill, Din maintained her speed. It wasn't anywhere close to the breakneck pace Josh was used to, but it was still fun!

That last trip around the course was much faster than the previous one. When Victor had his fill of high speed antics, Din and Raiden would stop near each other. "You've got a lot of natural talent for it," the Gym Leader complimented. "You've picked up on everything way faster than most of my students. I think most of your issues are with Jaakko specifically, not your technique. I would recommend getting to know your Stantler better before you try to control them. How are you holding up? If you've still got the energy, want to try flying? I think you could handle it well."

As they descended the downhill slope that marked the end of the course, Victor realized it was probably a good time to stop, despite the growing realization that he really didn't want to. He straightened himself upright and slowed Din carefully down, and the Sawsbuck, for her part, was very receptive to his commands. She gradually slowed her gait from her bounding gallop down to a slow walk, and then stopped altogether. Victor reached down and gave her an affectionate pat on the side of her shoulder in thanks. [break][break]

If his face wasn't already flushed from the excitement of riding at such speeds around the track, then the Gym Leader's praise would have had Victor blushing with sheepish pride. He didn't consider himself particularly talented in any sort of field; the fact that he'd found something he might have a natural knack for was a whole other sort of exciting. But he nodded in acknowledgment of Josh's assessment of Jaakko. Talent or no, he was going to have to work with the Stantler to establish a better rapport with the Pokemon. As if summoned by his thoughts, Jaakko finally caught up to the both riders and their Pokemon, huffing with exhaustion. Victor felt a pang of guilt as he watched the deer Pokemon sidle over to him. The poor guy definitely wasn't used to these kinds of speeds. [break][break]

But then Victor's attention turned to the prospect of flying. For all of his delight in speeding down the track on Din, the prospect of literally soaring through the air was daunting, to say the least. What if he fell off and was sent plummeting to the ground to meet a terrible and painful death? Or what if Victor got super airsick? On the other hand, Josh seemed to think he could handle it – Victor was almost more afraid of disappointing the Gym Leader than he was of meeting a grisly end, [break][break]

“I, uh...” Victor started nervously. He swallowed hard, “You know what? Yeah, I'll give it a shot. Just, uh, don't put me on anything too fast.” [break][break]

Oh boy, just what was he getting himself into?

After Victor had slid off, Din returned the shoulder pat with a gentle nose bump of affection if he allowed it. "No, really, you handled her well!" Josh insisted. It was the truth. Traveling at such speeds was at first intimidating, but ever so rewarding. Riding on a Pokémon was arguably simpler than driving a car, and piloting a flying Pokémon was much easier than flying an aircraft. It was the primary reason travel by flying Pokémon was so popular in Hoenn.

Nothing too fast? That put a lot of the Gym Leader's favorites out of the question. Resheph, as sweet as she was, flew as fast as a purple comet mid-Extreme Speed. Bladestorm was a no-go, loving to coast off the momentum of a dive. Verte, being a Flygon, might make Victor uncomfortable with his vibrations. He wished Valoo were still around; the Drampa would have been perfect for calming the nerves of first-time Pokémon pilots. Sadly, he was on the other side of The Border now.

The Gym Leader's eyes surveyed the skies above his property, ultimately whistling in the direction of a Kilowattrel and Pidgeot. The birds responded to his call and landed, the impressive specimens a little taller than Josh was. "These two are Pazuzu and Etali," he introduced the saddled flying-types, the empty cocoons above their seats perhaps reassuring Victor of the safety measures he took with all his partners. "Pazuzu was the first Pokémon I caught on my own."

The nerves did not go unnoticed, either. "If you're having second thoughts, we can always fly when you're ready to."

After dismounting Din (and acknowledging her affectionate nose bump), Victor recalled Jaakko to his Pokeball so he could get some rest. He watched as Josh seemed to consider something before whistling into the skies to summon the winged companions for the next leg of the lesson. Victor gave a nod of acknowledgment as he was introduced to the two, and smiled as Josh recalled his relationship with the Pidgeot in particular. A Trainer's first catch was always a nostalgic one, [break][break]

“Nah, I'd rather try my hand at it now while I've still got the chance,” Victor insisted. [break][break]

It was kind of Josh to be so considerate, but assessing the riding equipment the two birds were loaded with, it looked much safer than he had initially anticipated. The nerves were still there, sure, but Victor was no longer convinced that he was going to immediately slip off one of the birds and plummet to his death, [break][break]

“Should I take Etali, or Pazuzu?”

Victor's question was one that flustered Josh a little. Though both birds were controllable, they were also fast. They weren't his Extreme Speeding Pokémon, like Tiamat the Dragonite, but there was no getting around flying Pokémon being fast. Pidgeot were capable of incredible speed, whether diving or not, and Etali knowing how to use Electro Ball was an indicator of the kind of speed his Kilowattrel was capable of. "It's... hard to say. Pazuzu's a bit bigger but also a bit faster." And by a bit bigger, it was almost unnoticeable without measuring tape. Both were close to a foot taller than the Gym Leader himself. "You see, that's one of the things with flying Pokémon. Not many can hover. There's a minimum speed most flying Pokémon have to go before their wings can sustain them. Pazuzu's probably easier for an inexperienced pilot to learn with, but Etali is fine if you're really concerned about going too fast."

Whichever Victor chose, Josh would climb aboard the other and show him how the cocoon saddles worked. When properly zipped up, it would wrap around the riders' waist and upper legs, while still giving them the freedom of movement to control speed with leg pressure. They were an important part of riding flying Pokémon safely. "It's not dissimilar in concept to a seat belt on an airplane."

Once both were ready to go, the Gym Leader brought up one more important point. "Flying adds the third dimension, too. So now in addition to using the reins to control direction, you can--" The roar of a Garchomp's bio-thrusters, sounding like jet engines but not quite so loud, drowned out all other noise above the Racing Grounds. "Not now, Alphamax," Josh thought as the dragon zoomed off. "Sorry about that; Alphamax hasn't been able to fly freely like that in a bit. As I was saying, you can use the reins to not only control direction, but control altitude. Think of the reins like cords attached to a joystick on your mount's halters. If you pull back on them, you'll climb. If you lower tension on them, you'll descend. Simple enough?"

He hadn't expected to catch Josh off guard; was that a first in the brief amount of time he'd known the Gym Leader? Something about that stuck out to Victor, but he quickly dismissed the thought and instead considered his more pressing decision. Based on the information Josh provided, it appeared that there really was no getting around the speed issue. That just meant that Victor had to put on his big boy britches and step up to the challenge, [break][break]

“I'll take Pazuzu, then. I'm about as inexperienced as it gets,” he replied with resolve. [break][break]

He watched Josh climb onto Etali's saddle and secure himself in with the zippers. It turned out to be a relatively easy process to replicate, and Victor was pleased to find that it felt as secure as it looked. He was now thoroughly assured that he wouldn't be flung off the Pidgeot once they took to the air, but the thought of speeding through the skies still made his heart race with anxious trepidation. [break][break]

It certainly didn't help when he heard the roar of the engine-like Garchomp soar through the air above him. If he wasn't strapped so securely to Pazuzu, Victor was sure he would have practically leapt off of the bird at the sound of the dragon taking off like a jet engine. Josh's nonchalance when addressing this was absolutely mind-boggling, but hell, at this point, Victor assumed that riding a Garchomp at Mach whatever-the-fuck would be like a leisurely Sunday stroll for Josh. [break][break]

He was able to refocus himself just in time to catch Josh's instructions on piloting the Pidgeot. Pull back to climb, lower tension to fall, and he assumed the left and right and fast and slow would be the same as riding a terrestrial Pokemon. Victor made sure his grip was secure on Pazuzu's reins as he nodded in confirmation, [break][break]

“Simple enough; let's ride.”

"As fast as Pidgeot are, you'll find them to be about as standard as it gets for a flying Pokémon," Josh assured Victor as both birds turned toward the open sky above the Gym grounds. "The takeoff and landing are probably the hardest parts on you physically, but it's mostly your Pokémon handling them."

The two birds spread their giant wings wide before flapping them vertically with great strength, the grass around and beneath them blown sideways but not completely uprooted. With a leap and some jarring wingbeats, the two birds were in the air, gaining altitude. The two got a breathtaking look at Mauville's top level from above. People, Pokémon, and cars looked like toys from above. The view was one Josh commonly got when flying from place to place, but it could have been something unforgettable to Victor.

Josh kept Etali as close to Pazuzu as possible while still giving the normal-type plenty of airspace to maneuver. Once they were at altitude, the Pidgeot relinquished full control to Victor. He would have command over the aerial predator's speed, pitch, and yaw in his hands grasping the reins. The Gym Leader would do his best to follow the student -- and intervene if something went wrong. That was what his Dragonair was for.

Well, Josh certainly wasn't kidding when he mentioned the takeoff was one of the hardest parts. The rapid ascent into the sky was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying as Victor clung to Pazuzu. He held the reins in a white-knuckled death grip even after their altitude leveled out, and gripped impossibly tighter when he looked down at the people and Pokemon in miniature below. Victor's stomach sank when he realized just how high up they were, and the brief moment of bravado from just before they had taken off had completely evaporated. He was almost certain that he was going to have a heart attack. [break][break]

But there was a single thought that pulled him back from the brink of hysterics; he still had to control this damn bird if he was going to make his way back to the sweet comfort of terra firma. Control was something that Victor did indeed have, and that brief sliver of agency in an otherwise terrifying situation was enough for him to focus and actually start using Pazuzu's reins instead of clinging to them like a security blanket. [break][break]

Navigating in the air was a bit of a touch and go endeavor. Victor kept the Pidgeot coasting, staunchly refusing to apply much pressure on the bird's sides out of a fear that his heart might actually give out if the Pokemon took off at faster speeds. Turning was proving to be responsive and easy, similar to his riding of Josh's other Pokemon, but descending was another story altogether. At first he gave a lot of slack to the reins at once, causing the Pidgeot to descend far too quickly for Victor's comfort and causing the rider to loose a rather unbecoming scream of fear (he really hoped Josh couldn't hear that over the rushing winds around them). Then when he yanked up on the reins to ease the severity of the bird's dive, he over-corrected and sent Pazuzu soaring back upwards at a sharp angle, which again, elicited another frightened yelp from Victor. He at last managed to keep the bird level and guided the Pokemon to a gentle turn, careful not to get too far from the race track. Victor looked back over his shoulder at Josh in a rather pitiful but unspoken bid for a bit of reassurance.

Teaching skittish first-time pilots was not uncommon for the Gym Leader. Following the Pidgeot's swift flight, Josh felt his gut rise when Etali followed Pazuzu's roller coaster dive down and up. Josh even let out a whoop as he felt the g-forces slam his insides downward. Though Victor's two screams were at first concerning, once he had composed himself, Josh felt there was nothing to be alarmed about. Pidgeot was about as basic as flying got. A bit faster than most birds, but it was among the easiest to control.

As scared as Victor was of the higher speed compared to land travel, it was a reality of flying on a bird Pokémon. For ones that could not hover, avoiding an aerodynamic stall was one of the utmost importances. Less speed meant less lift around the bird's wings. The slower a bird flew, the harder it had to work to stay in the air.

As Victor glanced back, Josh would take his right hand off Etali's reins long enough to give the guest rider a thumbs-up. Though the wind prevented them from talking to one another clearly, it was clear from the Gym Leader's face that the student was doing well.

The thumbs up from Josh was a simple gesture, but enough to loosen some of the knots that Victor's insides had tied themselves into. If the expert thought that things were going just fine, then they probably were. [break][break]

With a newfound surge of confidence, Victor once again attempted to guide Pazuzu into a more controlled descent. He gradually loosened tension on the reins, careful and precise with the amount of slack he allotted. Sure enough, the Pidgeot responded accordingly, soaring at a gentle decline back to earth. Victor was happy to let the Pokemon take it's time in it's descent. Now that he had reassurance that he was going to make it back to the ground in one piece, he looked up and around to finally take in his surroundings in earnest. [break][break]

Though the creatures and objects below were still small from this height, they were coming into focus with greater detail the lower they dropped in elevation. Trees, cars, people, Pokemon; from here, Victor almost felt he had dominion over it all. His heart began to race again, though this time not in tremulous fear, but with true exhilaration. The colors of the world below him, the great expanse of sky all around – it was enough to make a man feel invincible when he was literally above it all. His eyes widened as much as he could force them to take it all in now that he was no longer afraid for his life. But it was impossible to drink in every last bit of scenery, so Victor resolved to commit what he could to memory as they grew close to touching down. But as they did so, a somewhat concerning question popped into his mind – [break][break]

How was he supposed to land this bird?

With Victor leading the way down, Josh could tell the student was ready to land. The lack of verbal communication made him consider investing in headsets beneath the helmets so they could talk to one another. He would just have to come up with a solution to the issue of the winds roaring around them.

Once they were in low flight above the Gym, the Leader raised a hand, prompting Pazuzu to ignore Victor's orders and maintain a circular holding pattern above the Gym's Main Sector. He hoped his friend was paying attention; botched landings were not pleasant for the body.

Josh guided his Kilowattrel straight ahead, lining up with the green surrounding one of his courses. He slowly guided Etali to the ground. When it looked like he was going to scrape the dirt with his talons, the Gym Leader pulled back sharply on the reins, his body lurching forward as the electric bird killed most of his momentum with powerful horizontal beats of his wings. The yellow and black avian quickly shifted to vertical wingbeats, sending blades of grass blowing every which way as he touched down. He waved for Victor to do the same.

As if to answer his question, Victor noticed the Gym Leader taking the lead, guiding the Kilowattrel in a circular loop as he decided a place to land. Victor guided Pazuzu to circle around above them in a similar formation, trying to keep his eyes trained on Josh so that he could examine his movements closely. He watched as the Gym Leader guided the bird onto a stretch of green, gliding low until the bird suddenly jerked it's body up and flapped it's wings to abruptly halt it's descent. Victor saw Josh wave him on to do the same. He nodded, more to himself than his friend, and began to guide Pazuzu to do the same. [break][break]

As the Pokemon and it's rider grew close to the ground, close enough that Pazuzu's talons looked like they might scrape the dirt beneath them, Victor jerked upwards hard on the reins, hoping he was correctly imitating what Josh had done. Pazuzu's wings fanned out behind them, massive wing beats acting almost like a parachute to slow them. The great bird's talons reached out in front of them like a pair of grasping hands, and Victor nearly felt the wind knock out of him when the Pidgeot's feet finally found purchase on the grass beneath them. It took a couple more steps and wing beats from the massive bird to slow them completely down, but after a few moments, Victor realized that they had safely made it back to earth. [break][break]

The flight may have been over, but the overwhelming adrenaline coursing through Victor's body was absolutely intoxicating. He felt like he could run a mile, suplex a Tauros, and arm wrestle an Ursaring all at once. With an almost manic smile on his face, he pumped his fists into the air, letting out a delighted “Woo!!”, having apparently forgotten about Josh in that moment or the fact that he was still rather securely strapped to Pazuzu. Nothing else really mattered right now, as far was Victor was concerned. He couldn't remember the last time he had felt so alive.

Josh watched Victor land the Pidgeot, taking mental note of his form. While it wasn't as refined as the Gym Leader's, the basics were there. Pazuzu was also slightly larger, meaning there was more momentum to halt, which could have made him experience greater forces during the landing. Either way, he was on land again. The Gym Leader dismounted Etali and would help Victor get off Pazuzu if he needed help.

"Sounded like you had fun!" Josh chirped, excited to see a new pilot doing so well. "There's nothing like flying on a Pokémon, is there? The freedom you get from it is... liberating. With a reliable land, sea, and sky Pokémon you can hop on, there's nowhere in Hoenn you can't go. Once you have your own Pokémon you can fly on, you'll love every bit of it."

While he wasn't sure, Victor looked tired. Once he came off the adrenaline high that obviously fueled him, he might collapse on the spot. "Once you've got the hang of controlling Jaakko and whatever flying-type you catch, I'm sure you'll be ready for a 200 or even a 300 level class to learn more advanced concepts. Any questions I can answer?"

As Josh helped him off of Pazuzu, Victor realized he was literally trembling from the rush of adrenaline surging through his veins. In his exuberant and exhausted state, it took him a moment to properly register what the Gym Leader had said. Victor smoothed down his frazzled hair before responding, [break][break]

Liberating almost sells the experience short. God, it was... incredible,” Victor chuckled breathlessly. [break][break]

His neurons were entirely too shot for him to think of anything coherent to ask Josh. Victor vaguely considered the Gym Leader's suggestion at a follow-up course, but he'd have to get his roster in order first. So he just shook his head, somewhat dazed as he replied, [break][break]

“No, this was a very educational experience. Thanks for the lesson, Josh.”

If that was the experience Victor got riding Pazuzu at fairly tame speeds, Josh wondered what he would think the day he truly mastered flying. Perhaps one day he and Josh would get to experience what it was like being on the large bird in the middle of a SUPERSONIC SKYSTRIKE. There was truly nothing as surreal as the entire surrounding world going silent due to outspeeding one's own sound waves. One day, he would enlighten the Pidgeot to the art of the Z-Move.

"The way you get better is by practicing. I look forward to seeing how you and Jaakko develop with one another. Maybe one day we will meet in the Gym Challenge," he idly speculated. "Cherish the freedom that comes with riding a Pokémon. You'll be able to go farther than you ever thought possible." With that, the Gym Leader guided Victor through the lobby and on his way.

Perhaps one day they might even meet on the racing circuit!
