They were supposed to go on a date tonight.

Nenet forgot to set her alarm reminding her to get ready and bundle up for a night spent in the snow watching the puppies play. Instead she was hunched over her coffee table with myriad papers strewn before her. One set was old and tattered and certainly not her hand writing, while the other set was filled with speculation and cross references to some books she had laying about as well.

She didn't hear the door open, and indeed would not have even known Zev was home again had a veritable stampede of Rockruffs not blow past her on their way to greet him. Looking frazzled for a moment, her eyes widen as everything slots into place and she swiftly tries to cover up her decidedly illegal research.

"You're home early," she hazards in a slightly higher-than-normal pitched voice, not knowing what time it even was as the sound of franticly moved papers fills the air.

The stampede of Rockruff upon Zev's arrival home was nothing new, but Nenet on the couch, surrounded by papers and books, prompted him to raise an eyebrow. He'd texted her earlier to let her know he was on his way home, expecting her to be ready for their date upon his return.[break][break]

But that message had gone unanswered, with the reason spread out before him on the coffee table.[break][break]

"I texted you," Zev said, though his tone lacked any accusation.[break][break]

Noting the way Nenet frantically gathered her papers, he took off his coat and shoes, then joined her on the couch. One hand reached out to grasp her wrist, lightly, and still her motions.[break][break]

"What are you working on?" he asked, peering closer at the top document in the pile, which bore her familiar handwriting.

A barely heard "Shit," spills out of Nenet's mouth as Zev mentions he had texted her. He wouldn't care but that wasn't the crux of the problem. The crux was Zev seeing her scrambling to hide research she never wanted him to find in the first place.

She could lie. She's very tempted to lie, in fact. Zev knew nothing about the stain on her professional career before it even began. Well, she's fairly positive he doesn't know about it. It wasn't hard to find her disciplinary hearing if you knew where to look - but you did have to know to look for it to begin with.

Maybe she could worm her way out of this without revealing too much. Zev knew squat about biology and recombinant DNA after all.

"How Type-designated nucleotide sequences can potentially migrate through different stages of embryonic development via forced genetic transfer between dissimilar Pokemon species." Which wasn't a lie but certainly wasn't the truth. "It's just some side research. Let me get ready, I'm sorry I didn't hear the phone chime." As she speaks she moves to pull of her oversized peppermint-themed sweater to go dress properly for the weather outside.

Nenet's reply was a string of words Zev knew individually, but together, they were utter gibberish. Normally, that was enough to prevent him from asking more questions. But as she set down her research to pull off her peppermint-striped sweater, he noticed that the edge of one paper looked awfully familiar.[break][break]

He tugged on it, pulling it out of the pile. Immediately, he recognized the content.[break][break]

"This is part of the Type Full formula," he said aloud, without thinking. Turning to the rest of the documents, he sorted through them until he found three other, similar sheets.[break][break]

Zev looked at his wife, eyes wide with surprise. "Where did you find these?"[break][break]

As far as he knew, only Team Rocket had gathered enough data to make their own Type: Null. But again, his tone lacked accusation; after all, Nenet was an intelligent and resourceful woman.[break][break]

If anyone outside of Rocket could get their hands on the research, it was her.

Nenet is halfway though pull off her red and white sweater when Zev states exactly what Nenet has been studying, much to her own horror: Type: Null. She pauses her movements before she tugs off the garment fully and sets it in her lap. Her expression is blank when she observes Zev, though there's a decided intensity behind her eyes as she searches her husband's face.

"When I went to the Ultra Sea I took a ship's log and found there were pages in the back that I've been deciphering," comes her level answer.

"How do you know what they are?" There is accusation in Nenet's tone in contrast to Zev's. This wasn't supposed to be anything he knew about. She wordlessly extends her hand for the pages he's rifled through in a silent request.

It's glaringly evident that Nenet has failed to criticise the papers' contents, making her desire to conceal her possession of them even more obvious.

Zev spent enough years of his life studying other people to recognize the guarded nature of Nenet's expression and posture. Uninterested in pushing her away, he handed back the documents.[break][break]

"Team Rocket's science department has been researching the Type Full formula gathered during expeditions into the Ultra Wilds," he explained. Sitting back, he draped an arm across the back of the couch behind her shoulders. "They've successfully made a few Type: Null already. I have one."[break][break]

A smile slowly spread across his face as he considered the intensity in his wife's eyes. The thirst for knowledge. He knew no other reason for her to be so absorbed in a side project, to the point that she'd forgotten their date.[break][break]

"I can show it to you, if you want."

Nenet tucks the pages back into her pile, though her attention cuts back to Zev sharply as he mentions Rocket's research department having already made the pokemon hinted at in the papers. If the League had their own departments looking over the Type Full formula she was certainly not on any of the panels for it.

"You have one?" Nenet asks, the suspicion and anger bled out of her voice. Her coldness melting away like a yuki-onna in the snow to instead be replaced with a tense desire for knowledge, Nenet says, "Show me."

"Okay, but not here," Zev said as he stood up from the couch. "It's too big for the apartment, and won't get along with the dogs."[break][break]

After bundling up in coats and scarves, he led Nenet up the stairs to the apartment building's roof. Unbeknownst to them, it had started snowing while they were inside. A fresh, thin layer coated everything in sight while soft, fluffy flakes continued falling around them.[break][break]

With the twinkling stars above and the glittering city lights below, the wintry beauty of their surroundings seemed almost magical.[break][break]

Opening a Pokéball, Zev released his Type: Null. The creature snorted at the frigid temperature and stamped its claws upon the snow, suspicious. Then it spied Nenet and froze. Beady eyes flickered between this woman it had never seen before and its master, as if to ask the question, Friend or foe?[break][break]

The man gestured to his wife. "This is Nenet," he said to the Pokémon. "She's an ally. She won't harm you."[break][break]

Still, if Nenet chose to approach the man-made creature, he would remain close to defend her in case Type: Null decided to attack.

Having barely considered any risks to seeing the beast, Nenet merely nods and dresses as quickly as she's able. They're out on the building's roof before she knows it, the dusting of snow turning the world into a wintry wonderland, with ice patches here and there on the ground.

The pokeball reveals a creature she could barely imagine, and her eyes widen as she stares at the Type: Null. It's hard to tell what bits and pieces of pokemon went into its creation, and the heavy control mask is certainly nothing she was expecting.

"Is it aggressive," Nenet asks, her gaze never leaving the Type: Null. Normally she would have examined the creature better by now, but her recent experiences with pain and suffering hold her back. Instead, Nenet offers her hand for the Pokemon to examine and determine whether it wants to step forwards or not.

"Did you make it yourself?"

"Yes," Zev said without hesitation. "Very. And it doesn't trust easily. I don't think it even trusts me." [break][break]

Type: Null did not move toward Nenet's outstretched hand, as if to emphasize this observation. Instead, it lowered its head and sniffed at the snow, great puffs of its breath condensing upon the air. [break][break]

"It's never seen snow before," Zev explained casually, unfazed by his Pokémon's standoffish nature. "And yes and no. One of our Head Scientists assisted me." [break][break]

He considered sharing Naomi Sato's name, especially since the two women had met before. But a person's affiliation with Team Rocket was secret knowledge. Revealing it to an outsider was as good as treason. [break][break]

Unless… [break][break]

"You want to make your own, don't you?" Zev asked Nenet, struck by a moment of clarity. His lips curled in a smile both amused and proud. "That's not exactly League-sanctioned research, is it?"

The dusting of snow melted like cookies in milk as Type: Null snuffed at the ground, creating a bare patch that's quickly filled in once more. "I see," comes Nenet's answer as she continues to observe the chimera.

She silently puzzles through the equipment needed to construct such a creature - the news Zev had help with one of Rocket's Scientists made sense on several levels. Funding, to begin with, and a relative ease of acquiring the materials needed with much fewer questions asked.
[break][break]
Her distracted thoughts are abruptly ground to a halt when Zev speaks again, and her golden eyes cut sharply over to him. Her lips purse subtly at his amused observation that follows - the note of pride goes wholly unnoticed.
[break][break]
"I can't tell if you're taunting me or not." Nenet's voice is level as she carefully watches her husband's features, the emotionless of her expression a deep indication of her tumultuous emotions beneath the surface. Once more she questions whether he knows of her dubious past when it came to research. Regardless, it's obvious Zev has pressed deeply on a bruise he never knew was there.

Zev raised an eyebrow, the humor vanishing from his face. The tension in Nenet's face and body, which had briefly vanished at the prospect of seeing a Type: Null in person, had returned. Her expression was carefully neutral, a mask that could fool most people. [break][break]

He, however, recognized it as a sign that uncertain emotions roiled within her. Emotions she did not wish or know whether to express. [break][break]

"I'm not taunting you," Zev said, his tone serious and without judgment. "What's wrong? Isn't this what you want?" He gestured to the abomination of a Pokémon that now leaned over the side of the roof, listening to carolers on the street as they sang 'Jingle Bells'. "This is what those old manuals describe. How to create one of these." [break][break]

Stepping closer to her, he took her hand, lacing their fingers together. "And I know you, Nenet. If you're studying them, you won't stop at theory. You'll want to put the knowledge into practice. You're ambitious like that." [break][break]

Gently, Zev raised her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss against her knuckles. The smile he gave her then was small, private, encouraging. [break][break]

"It's part of why I like you so much."

Yes. And that was the problem, wasn't it? Zev wouldn't see it that way. She knew he wouldn't. He didn't care for the finer minutia of academia and would find her explanation and motives droll and frivolous.

Their hands lace together and Nenet suddenly wishes she had a pair of mittens or gloves on; the warmth of his hand sears compared to the cold of the air and instinctively her hand tightens within his. She swallows around the words sticking in her throat, watching as Zev kisses her bare knuckles and flashes her a smile. Her very own wolf in crystalline sheepskin.

"I received an ethics violation during my graduate studies for testing the Corrosion ability on Lunatone and Solrock. The two I have from Alola are the surviving population from my control groups." Clearing her throat, she adds softly, "I thought you had read my file and were referencing it."

She doesn't expect judgement from Zev, but then again she really isn't sure what to expect at all now that she's said it.

"I can't afford to be caught like that again."

The seriousness of Nenet's delivery told Zev everything he needed to know about this ethics violation. He was fully aware that human society generally operated on a moral compass separate from his own; he knew how to play by their rules at times, when need required it. [break][break]

But otherwise, he found the concept of 'ethics' arbitrary. Pointless. Limiting. [break][break]

Based on what he'd already observed of Nenet—with the fallen Minior from last autumn and now her interest in Type: Null—he guessed she felt the same way. [break][break]

Her word choice, too, was interesting. [break][break]

"So you regret getting caught, but not the experiment," Zev observed, his smile growing wider. Releasing her hand, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her against his side. Even through their coats, the heat of him radiated out, warming them both. [break][break]

He pressed a kiss to her temple and murmured, "Your secrets are my secrets, Nenet. And you know how good I am at keeping them."
