Zev did not need to explain himself to the likes of howard slayte. Nenet had wanted to help the Lunala, not hurt it, so healing it had been their best tactic. Thrashing it within an inch of its life, on the other hand, would have certainly earned Zev her ire. [break][break]

"It wasn't a complete failure," he pointed out instead, taking the cigarette from Howard. But instead of leaning forward to let the other man light it, Zev took his own lighter out of his own pocket. [break][break]

Flame flickered to life in his hand. Briefly, he thought about supping on it, but used it to light his cigarette instead. After all, he'd recently dined on much stronger light. A tiny flame was no comparison. [break][break]

Zev was content to walk in silence. He disliked small talk and preferred his own company over most others'. And most of all, he despised questions that pried into his personal life. So when Soyeon broached that topic, he fixed her with an icy stare. [break][break]

"It's better for you if you don't get to know me," he said, all traces of helpful mentorship gone from his demeanor. [break][break]

They reached a dead end flanked by empty offices. [break][break]

"We're pretty far inside the power plant at this point. I'm going to head back, but don't let that stop you from continuing on without me," the Beast said, turning to retrace their steps back to the entrance.

Zev did not remember well the other interrogations he'd endured, but he imagined they started off exactly like this one: with innocuous questions meant to put him at ease. [break][break]

"Yes, both are normal. I'm feeling fine," he answered, not feeling the need to elaborate. [break][break]

Marcus probably already knew about Zev's nocturnal habits, a common trait among members of Team Rocket. Many of their organization's operations tended to occur in the dead of night. Moverover, when you were known among the League to associate with the crime syndicate, moving around was easier when cloaked in darkness. [break][break]

What the doctor did not have to know, however, was how both sleeping and eating did not come naturally to Zev, not anymore. They were functions he forced himself to undergo, to support the human body he still inhabited. But part of his consciousness no longer existed on such a narrow plane, and it had taken some time to readjust.

BRICK BREAK smashed through Espeon's REFLECT but did little to slow down the purple feline. He retaliated with a PSYCHIC aimed directly at the Galarian Farfetch'd, only to be thrown aside by the advantageous PHANTOM FORCE. [break][break]

"Good choices so far," Zev commented to Diana, watching the battle closely. "But can you keep it up?" [break][break]

As Espeon struggled to his feet, Ambipom leaped high into the air. She descended with alarming speed, attempting to strike the Farfetch'd with AERIAL ACE.

Howard had a point about the stone. Still, the more Zev stared at it, the more similar it looked to the tower he'd seen in the other world. But before he could voice those thoughts, Howard made another comment about the Lunala. [break][break]

"Nenet didn't want to kill it. In fact, I'm certain she wants to capture it for study," Zev replied, his fingertips skimming lightly over the symbols close at hand. "We tried subduing it and healing its wounds, but it did end up flying off." [break][break]

Mild frustration colored his last words. He dropped his hand from the face of the altar and looked around. [break][break]

"This place drew Lunala to it with some kind of beacon, so there must be some connection. Maybe it's a place of power for it, like how Mt. Chimney was with Moltres." Zev recalled the footage he'd taken with BARNABY FINCH last year, revealing how the magma rejuvenated the legendary bird.

He turned back to the smart board, closing out windows and apps. Neither he nor Reinier had any reason to linger. They both had important tasks to attend to.

"We remember," Zev confirmed, his eyes still on the circular door built into the rock face. Through the psychic bond with Necrozma, he felt the pain of its injuries from the battle against Lunala, minor as it was in the face of greater existential agony. "We remember well." [break][break]

Mention of the flute drew Zev back to the present moment. Turning his gaze upon Howard, he shook his head. [break][break]

"No. It vanished after Nenet played a note. If we drew out the Tapu Bulu again, we might be able to obtain another one, but I don't feel any strong presence around here today." [break][break]

Which was a pity. On one hand, another encounter could have provided more answers. But on the other hand, they could take their time investigating without imminent danger. [break][break]

Zev stepped up closer to peer at the symbols. "Do any of these look similar to anything we have on Hoenn?" he asked the admin.

Bending down, Zev picked up the Pokéball containing his new Electrike. He had no need for the Pokémon, however, so he tossed the capsule to Soyeon. "Here. You can use this for your Genesect." [break][break]

They continued on, down the winding labyrinth of New Mauville. He did not answer her question right away, recalling instead the anger he'd felt in the wake of Caleb Harcourt's betrayal, or when he'd learned an unknown agent of Team Rocket had injured Neffatari Nzingha. [break][break]

Choosing his words carefully, Zev replied, "It's easy to remain calm and collected when you understand that there are more important things in life than getting upset over other people. Instead of getting hung up on how much you hate someone, focus on your goals, no matter how far away they seem." [break][break]

Sounds of wild Pokémon drew his attention to a conference room. He opened the door to peer inside.

Inwardly, Zev was satisfied that Reinier had come to the same conclusion as he had, even without knowing all the pieces in play at Team Rocket's disposal. The Beast nodded once more and turned to the grunt. [break][break]

"In that case, you're being reassigned to Mossdeep. Get acquainted with the city and report back as much as you can about its defenses, weaknesses, and anything else we can exploit," he said. "If that requires making friends with the locals, then do it." [break][break]

Using the smart board, Zev pulled up the photo of a blonde, middle-aged man. Beneath the photo were the words MOSSDEEP GYM: AURUM BADGE. [break][break]

"There's also a Pokémon gym in Mossdeep. Consider challenging it. There's no doubt that the Gym Leader, Gwyar Wledig, will defend his city if we bring our troops there. We need to know his battle strategy." [break][break]

darkness covers the battlefield as a massive, yawning void opens above it. everything touched by darkness begins to be sucked in and consumed. all weather effects are canceled, and pokemon cannot flee.

Also registering a custom NIDOKING Z-Move from an earlier passho, per discussion with Shiv.

Aurelie seemed reassured, somehow, and confidence among the lower ranks was important for Team Rocket's continued success. Zev shook his head at her question. Though her answers hadn't been sufficient, he believed she'd been honest with him. [break][break]

"No, that's all. Let me know when the order's complete," he said, turning to leave. [break][break]

The air around him and his Zoroark shimmered. By the time the pair reached the door to leave Aurelie's workshop, the earlier illusion that had disguised them had returned. [break][break]

He left the shop the same way he entered, leaving no indication that the known terrorist Zev Harcourt had visited that day.
