Just knowing that he would stay on guard made him feel more at ease. It made it so he didn't have to worry about looking out for himself as well. Something that would most likely have happened if he had been paired with an ordinary civilian during this excursion. Some civilians just wouldn't be cut out for protecting themselves in this kind of situation.

At the question, a puzzled frown appeared on his face. That was kind of a loaded question. 'Weird' could really mean anything. As the questions continued, his expression cleared and he glanced over his shoulder at the older male.

He wasn't really sure who Josh was talking about, but he nodded anyway. Still, he wondered what made certain people so special. He, for one, wasn't expecting a legendary Pokémon to take any interest in him. For one, he didn't really see what would be so interesting about him. For another thing, he just didn't think he had a lot to offer.

Hmmm, he wasn't sure he bought into legendaries being gods. Sure, they were powerful, but he just didn't believe in that kind of stuff. It was hard to believe in gods with the stuff happening with Team Rocket, though he supposed even before then he had never been one to believe. It just wasn't the way his parents had raised him.

"I suppose, I mean I guess it falls in line with the idea that you're stronger if you have something to protect," he agreed with a small shrug. Though he wasn't really sure if he understood that line of thinking either. Oh, don't get him wrong, he wouldn't hesitate to protect those he cared about or even just your common stranger, but thinking you will be stronger just because you have something to protect won't stop a person from freezing up or messing things up some other way.

‘There was a Xerneas in Dewford,’ he thought. Perhaps he should invest in watching the news more. Or should he say reading it. What one may find surprising is that outside of playing video games he didn’t really want anything to do with a television. Watching TV just didn’t appeal to him, never had.

“That sounds like quite the story,” he said at last. “I couldn’t ever imagine being in that kind of situation. I mean, I’m sure that time will come considering the way things are. I just can’t picture it,” he admitted with a small shrug.

Speaking of Avatars, he still wasn’t really sure he understood them. “I wonder what makes legendaries bless people, it’s not like legendaries aren’t powerful enough on their own. I guess I’ve always just wondered what they need us for. I know people need contact with other people, but I can’t fathom that being the reason for legendaries blessing people.”

It was just something that had always made him curious. A puzzle he felt he needed to figure out. Though he wasn’t sure how he would go about something like that.

At the mention of infinity energy, he frowned. “I’m not sure, we’ve never been around any Pokémon that emits it to try,” he admitted, giving Mirage a thoughtful look.

“Yeah, if you get sick it’s probably best not to bring all of them out at once,” he agreed, especially considering he wasn’t as healthy as the gym leader. In fact, the thought of what it could do to him when it made someone as healthy as Josh sick made him inwardly shudder.

Thankfully, the older male was more than happy to defer to his decision. He was well aware that this wouldn't be the case for everyone. Some people wouldn't take kindly to taking orders from a kid, even if said kid could be considered a genius.

Deciding to just move on, he continued walking, putting the tracks in the back of his mind. That was until the older male called out to him about some gashes on some rocks. He studied the gashes, even running his hand over a few of them. They were pretty deep, unsurprising considering they looked sword-like.

"Maybe whatever Pokémon made these either has sword-like appendages or really sharp claws," he stated, eying the marks a bit more before backing up. Whatever made those marks could be very aggressive or marking its territory.

So, either they could end up running into an aggressive Pokémon or one that was territorial. He was hoping for neither though. Don't get him wrong, he loved a good battle but hated deviating from a mission even more.

"Whatever left those marks is either highly aggressive or territorial, so let's stay on guard. We don't want to be caught off guard if we just happen to be attacked," he said before he resumed walking.[break] CIAN MAHER

He frowned and turned in a circle. Nope. Nothing. Somehow, he had lost track of the person he had come down here with. Maybe it was the other way around. Maybe the people he had come down here had lost track of him.

Letting out a sigh, he swung himself onto Mirage's back, gripping the reins with one hand while he fiddled with his phone with the other. Unsurprisingly, he didn't seem to have much service.

Resisting the urge to let out another sigh, he urged Mirage to go, his eyes scanning their surroundings as they went. Hopefully, he would find his wayward team. And if not them, at least someone.

Suddenly, Mirage stopped walking and all the urging wouldn't cause him to move. "What is it?" he asked, debating whether he should have Mirage turn around and go in the direction they had come from.[break] KING WAYLAND

He eyed the tracks as if he could decipher their origin by staring at them intently. Upon hearing the older man's comment, he glanced up at him. It appeared that the older man had encountered these tracks before. It was a pity that he hadn't discovered what they belonged to. The temptation to pursue them was strong. However...

"Chasing after unfamiliar tracks... that seems like a guaranteed way to get lost," he said with a sigh as he stood up.

"If I were a different person, I might suggest hunting down whatever left those tracks. But being who I am, I think we should ignore them. I don't handle the cold well, so I'd rather not risk getting lost down here. Even with my eidetic memory, certain things might appear identical."

With his decision made, he hoisted himself back onto Mirage's saddle, trying to push aside thoughts of what could happen if they became lost.

"I've never really seen a legendary up close. How did you get her anyway? I thought only avatars could gain access to legendaries," he admitted, his gaze fixed on the horse Pokémon. That was probably because he hadn't heard of anyone outside of avatars having anything to do with legendary Pokémon. It was quite curious that this one wasn't one of those that chose to grant its wielder powers.

That aside, that wasn't the only reason he was stunned. "Just looking at her makes me feel colder," he said, eyeing the icy horse. It was a well-known fact that he didn't do too well in the cold. In fact, he was wearing multiple layers, the sweaters being a bit tight-fitting as to not limit his mobility.

Infiltration. He couldn't say he had ever done anything like that before. However...

"Never tried infiltrating a place before, but Mirage's illusions should help with that kind of skill, shouldn't it? I can have Mirage illusion us to make it seem we're not really there. It's pretty dark down here, so an illusion to make it seem we're just part of the shadows," he suggested.

It was actually kind of surprising that a trainer wasn't interested in the gym circuit. Even he was, and that was saying something. One would think someone as interested in science as he was wouldn't be into the whole battling thing. Or at least interested in the gym circuit.

"Never met a young person not interested in the gym circuit. It's a good way to get stronger and test yourself as a trainer. I mean, part of the reason I came down here was to test myself against powerful Pokémon who make their home here," he admitted, his gaze scanning the path ahead of them.

He might have continued to say something more when the sound of a cry caught his attention. It still sounded further down and too distant for him to really hear it clearly. At the mention of being prepared to go, he inclined his head before starting down. It was dark, but that didn't really bother him. He wasn't without a light source; if it got too dark, he would just have Song come out of her Pokéball and use Dazzling Gleam to provide them with some light.
