To further distract himself, he focused on the tracks. For the most part, the tracks headed in the direction they were already going, so following them wasn't really out of the question.

Being somewhat observant, he noticed the disappointment. However, being no mind reader, he couldn't exactly figure out what could've disappointed him so. That didn't mean he couldn't guess though. And of course, that meant being a bit insecure, thinking he wasn't disappointed to be faced with some kid instead of another grown-up.

"I'm hoping to see a Walking Wake, Gouging Fire, or Raging Bolt. I've heard rumors that there have been sightings, and I must admit it's got me more than a little curious, despite favoring normal types. The fact that they resemble the Johto beast is quite intriguing," he told the older male.

Watching a few rockets flee, he resisted the urge to sigh. Had they done it? Had they won? Was it over? These questions swirled around inside his mind as Josh rejoined him.

As Josh told him they had saved the Iron Leaves, he was relieved. However, that relief was short-lived when he found out Team Rocket had gotten away with the research on the Iron Leaves. So, while they had saved the paradox pokemon, they hadn't really won.

Debating on whether to ask, he chewed his lower lip. Deciding it couldn't hurt to ask, he did.

Today was sure to be a strange experience. Apart from college lectures, he had never been inside a school. Any classes he had taken before college were online, and the only college classes he attended in person were those that couldn't be done online, like most science classes. He also attended college lectures given by guest speakers in person.

Anyway, he had been assigned the task of helping kids who were not much younger than himself learn about rangers and what it was like to be one, especially at his age.

Arriving at the school in Oldale Town, he brought Mirage to a stop. Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, he dismounted the Hisuian Zoroark and turned to face the spectral fox.

"Let's do this," he said, smiling slightly when Mirage nudged his hand, trying to calm him down.

Feeling a surge of confidence, he proudly lifted his head and walked towards the schoolyard, with Mirage following behind.

It wasn't difficult to spot the Rangers Booth, and he made his way over to see his partner for the mission already there.

As expected, the other person seemed to be a good bit older, probably to avoid giving the impression that inexperienced rangers were being sent to the school.

"Hello, I hope you haven't been waiting long. Anyway, my name is Absalom, but you can call me Axel if you prefer. Absalom can be a bit of a mouthful," he said, extending his hand towards the older man.

He was enjoying his sandwich when he noticed the owner of the ranch making his way towards him. At the show of gratitude, his face heated up a bit in embarrassment. "Oh, it was no trouble," he said once he had swallowed his bite of food.

"Anyway, if anyone should be thanked, it should be Pulse. I've never really interacted with a lot of other kids, so I was a bit nervous. He helped me relax and even gave Mirage a healing session. Due to the nature of a Hisuian Zoroark, lacerations can appear on their body," he told the older male, his gaze flickering briefly to the two mentioned Pokémon.

Having come to Slatesport for a bit of shopping after a ranger mission, he was on his way back home when the sound of a voice reached him. Trading a look with Mirage, he pulled on the Hisuian Zoroark's reins, guiding him in the direction he had heard the voice from. Soon enough, another teen, perhaps a bit older than himself, came into view, as well as around six Mareep.

Well, that wasn't good. Some Mareep must have escaped from a farmer, probably due to the door that had happened the night before.

"Do you know who these Mareep belong to?" he inquired, guiding Mirage to the older teen's side.

While he awaited the other's response, his gaze flickered over the Mareep before coming to rest on the Farfetch'd and the Karrablast, neither of which were really considered herding pokemon. Though it wasn't like he had any room to talk, since he didn't have a Yamper in his possession or some other Pokémon known for their herding capabilities.[break] Knight Naito

It was a bit surprising that he had been beaten to the location. Though it wasn't like he knew for certain when the call for help had been put out. It still made him want to inquire whether or not he was late. He hated keeping people waiting, even if it wouldn't be his fault.

Watching the interaction between Eris and the ranch hand, he was a bit confused. How did someone her age know how to fix fences? It definitely wasn't a talent most kids knew. Or did they? Was it normal for kids to know how to patch fences? If so, perhaps he should learn. Without allowing his parents to find out, of course. Not that he thought his sister would tell them. As far as he knew, she hadn't even told them that he had started training as a ranger.

Still a bit wrapped up in his own thoughts about normal kid behavior, he simply nodded before guiding Mirage through the gate. Only when he had reached the other side did he speak. "I hope you haven't been waiting long," he said with a tone that implied he didn't like keeping people waiting.

Keeping in mind that the sun was positioned over his left shoulder, he trekked further in the direction he had chosen. So far, he hadn't seen anything, nor had Mirage sensed anything, making him frown. As Mirage scented the air once more, he scanned the undergrowth with a sharp gaze. Still nothing.

Perhaps Josh or Royal were having more luck.

As if thinking about him had summoned him, the elite ranger's voice sounded over the comms.

"Nothing yet, I'm going to meet back up with Royal though. Perhaps he has found something, over."

With that said, he guided Mirage to go back in the direction they had come from. He passed the spot he had last seen Royal in and was heading in the direction Royal had been heading in when Mirage suddenly perked up.

Before he could even think of inquiring what was up, Mirage suddenly picked up his pace, catching him off guard. Luckily, more than used to Mirage's fast speed, he was able to quickly recover.

Soon enough, thanks to looking up, he spotted the end of Royal's tail in a tree. Urging Mirage to slow down, they slowed to a stop before he swung himself off the back of his fox companion.

Crouching on the ground, he eyed it closely before running a hand over the ground. Just like he had thought, the ground had been disturbed here. Looked like footprints, but so many things had passed over them since then, they were hard to make out.

Before he could think too much on it, Royal rejoined him, tugging on his sleeve. "Got something?" he asked as he got up, following after Royal.

Upon being led to the base of the tree, he looked up to see a man about halfway up the tree. Seeing no easy way up the tree, at least not when it came to someone like himself, he released Mistral out of her pokeball and used her to fly up until he was level with the branch he was on to confirm some things.

After confirming some things, he radioed Josh back.

"Royal found him, apparently he had climbed a tree to get away and now he can't get down. Fear of heights maybe, over."[break] Josh Devlin

At the praise, his face heated up a bit, and he looked away. It seemed that despite all his talk, he wasn't the best at receiving praise.

As he spoke about ways that were less dangerous, he grew sheepish. "Sorry, growing up, my parents didn't want me doing anything. I was three months too early with underdeveloped lungs, so my parents had plenty to worry about. They kept me isolated out of fear of what could happen. I guess now that I have the freedom to make decisions on my own without them breathing down my neck, I want to prove that they don't need to worry so much about me. I guess sometimes I can go a bit overboard in that regard," he admitted.

Having no doubts that Josh could handle himself, he just focused his attention on his own battle. On keeping as many grunts as he could from entering the Research Station. Hopefully, he would keep Josh from having to deal with too many attackers. Just because he could handle himself didn’t mean he couldn’t keep the gym leader from being too swamped.

He watched as Song used Disarming Voice on a few Houndoom trying to sneak up on Mirage and praised her for having her comrade's back before watching as Mirage used Bitter Malice on a Skunktank, slamming it back into a wall effectively knocking it out.

Wincing slightly, he made sure to let Mirage know he was doing a good job as well before taking the chance to look around. It seemed that there were many Rockets left on his end. He hoped that wasn’t because more had slipped past him to engage with Josh and that they had fled instead.

He listened to what he had to say, his expression thoughtful. If he was being honest, he didn't go out of his way to listen to reports. He basically just did as he was asked. If he had to guess, he wasn't told about the Regirock stuff because it didn't pertain to what he was tasked to do down here.

"Yeah, if it's been around, I definitely would've noticed," he agreed. "There's still a chance one of us will see it though if we come down here enough," he added with a shrug.

The question gave him pause, but after thinking it over a bit, he responded, "Mostly exploring, but I wouldn't mind the chance to test my strength down here. I've heard there are really powerful Pokémon down here. In order to protect those I care about, I must get stronger."[break] CIAN MAHER
