Blue eyes go wide as a sharp-clawed Pokemon suddenly interposes itself between Florian and the girl he'd been addressing, threat oozing from the gesture. Pretty and ribboned as he was, Florian's Sylveon is quick to rise to the occasion — he growls, a pink fog seeping from beneath his paws and filling the area with a misty terrain.[break][break]

The other trainer steps up in an attempt to diffuse the situation, and the Sylveon sits down in a quiet cooperation. Florian steps up next to his Pokemon and soothes him with a hand gently stroking his ear.[break][break]

"It's all right. Joli's just protective, he won't harm you."[break][break]

Joli trills his agreement, and both Pokemon and trainer startle a little when the Weavile suddenly leaps to a nearby tree. Florian's tense, expecting a potential attack, but it seems the Pokemon has identified a different threat.[break][break]

Far from being intimidated, the fairy-type researcher croons over the pink-and-white Pokemon that emerges. She's singing softly, and thought it makes him a little sleepy and Joli's tiny fangs flash as he yawns, there doesn't seem to be a threat behind the sound. The Wigglytuff does its best to mimic Joli's earlier display, her own form of misty terrain spreading around her.[break][break]

"Oh, you're a darling," Florian gushes. "Bravo, bravo."

he's such a softie

Florian glances over to the ranger with surprise at the impatience in his tone. He opens his mouth on an instinct to defend the poor Pokemon — she was facing an entire group of Beedrill, what more did this guy want from her? — when the dual-type springs into action and lights up the bugs with a blazing inferno. Florian closes his mouth, settling a little when Monty congratulates her.[break][break]

Maybe that's just how they operate, he tells himself, though he can't help but to be troubled by it. He's a gentle spirit; some might say he's too soft.[break][break]

Jonquille dances back on the breeze to give her newfound allies room to operate as the Claydol is released, the flowering fairy-type glowing with energy as she continues her healing.[break][break]

"Oh, of course. I wish only that we could have been of more help, but my darlings and I don't usually take part in battles." The angry buzzing grows faint as the majority of the infestation is driven off, a few stragglers hovering about in a confused daze thanks to the sandstorm. "I volunteered because I have some experience with bug Pokemon, but I admit I was not expecting something this... intense." He gestures vaguely to the retreating swarm. "So I suppose I should be thanking you, no?" He smiles at the ranger, whose name he still didn't know. "To whom do I owe this gratitude?"

Florian tilts his head with a thoughtful frown, uncharacteristically silent for once as he considers the other's words. In all of his excitement at having a literal unicorn as one of his Pokemon, he hadn't really stopped to think about how it had came to be. The ranger was right — if it was as simple as a bit of energy, there would be plenty more of the psychic-type Ponyta running about.[break][break]

"You raise a fair point," he concedes, nodding. His eyes are on the Chandelure as Monty sends it in the direction of the garage, but his mental focus is entirely elsewhere. "You are thinking perhaps of a true legend?"[break][break]

He didn't know anything about Hoenn's local legends, let alone those from Galar, but growing up in Kalos had imparted knowledge of the region's myths. He had taken particular interest in Xerneas and its supposed connection to the fairy typing, but what stories he had uncovered in his studies all seemed chalked up to just that — stories. He likes to believe that such powerful Pokemon exist, however, and so he smiles at the idea.[break][break]

"I may not know how she came to be, but my Laverre is a blessing, for sure." He glances back over his shoulder at the majestic Rapidash, currently grazing upon the vivid grasses of their client's lawn. They do not look impressed. Florian turns back, pretending not to have noticed. "I am fortunate to — oh, that is a lot of bees."[break][break]

As the garage door is opened, the buzzing grows loud enough to nearly drown out his words, and Florian takes a subconscious step back as they immediately swarm the Chandelure. True to Florian's direction, Jonquille readies an aromatherapy to deal with any negative effects of the Beedrill's stings. Should Gala look any worse for wear, the Comfey would use her triage ability to quickly perform some boosted floral healing on the ghostly chandelier. Though he dare not get so close to the poisonous bugs, Joli supports from afar by firing a swift barrage of energy toward one of the bugs.

FORGIVE THE RAMBLE, he got excited

Florian's eyes light up at the question, and he momentarily forgets about the job in his excitement. "Ah, she was a gift! A reward, I suppose, for a job well done! It was not until she evolved that she came to look this way." Florian strokes her neck, smiling, and Laverre tosses her mane. She's a bit of a show-off herself, as it turns out. "I am thinking it is all the Galarian energy about."[break][break]

He claps his hands together and beams wide. "She is, yes! She is also a fairy, as it turns out."[break][break]

Apparently their client had no patience for the men and their fawning, and Florian's cheeks flush as he ducks his head apologetically. "Ah, of course, my apologies!"[break][break]

Their curt interruption seems to have irked the green-haired ranger, but Florian is unaffected as he turns toward the garage. The threatening drone of Beedrill alarms him far less when he sees the Pokemon the ranger has released. "Ah, a Fire-type, très bien! My darlings shall support you how they can!" Joli bounds forward with a trill of confirmation, the Sylveon's love ball forever empty at his trainer's hip. His Comfey emerges from a friend ball, the little Pokemon clutching its string of flowers within a delicate grasp. "Set up the field for us, my dear," Florian instructs of the Comfey.[break][break]

Jonquille gives a little twirl in reply, and the grassy lawn on either side of the drive flourishes and takes on a vibrant hue. The enhanced grassy terrain seems to invigorate the flower Pokemon.[break][break]

"She can cure poisons and keep your Pokemon at the peak of health!" Dropping his voice, he says with a secret smile, "And now that we are out of earshot, you are free to ask whatever questions you wish! Florian Laurel, at your service."

Apparently, the Ponyta that Florian had received as a reward from the last job he'd taken had been pretty damn close to evolving... and when it had, well, it didn't look like any Rapidash Florian had ever seen. It wasn't on fire, for one, and its luxurious mane was colored in pastel purples and greens. His Pokedex had informed him that it was now a fairy-type, and the excitable professor had nearly leaped out of his skin.[break][break]

Now, he rides into Petalburg on the back of a literal unicorn, his Sylveon bounding after the pair with excited yips and squeals. He feels like some kind of storybook hero as he dismounts in front of the house and offers the owners a sheepish smile.[break][break]

"I am here about the bugs! They are inside, no?"[break][break]

After ogling his Rapidash for a moment — and yes, all right, Florian was showing off, who could blame him? — they gesture nervously toward their garage. They've called the rangers, apparently, and back-up is on its way if Florian wants to wait around.[break][break]

"Oh, I am sure I can handle some bugs!" the Kalosian insists cheerfully, only to hear the horrific hum of an entire swarm of Beedrill coming from behind the garage door. He quickly steps back against his Rapidash's flank, blinking. "Or, ah, perhaps I will wait for your ranger friend. That is not a thing I ought to brave on my own." He's brave, but he isn't stupid. He turns to see a stranger on approach, smiles at him and offers a wave. "Allo, Monsieur, might you be the ranger that was promised? There are a lot more Beedrill in this garage than I had originally thought!"

looking for grass and fairies, first stage evo preferred

It's a beautiful day outside, sun shining and the absence of snow. Florian thinks it won't last long with winter on the horizon, and so he decides to take full advantage of the weather while it lasts to look for some of the more delicate species of Pokemon. Grass-types didn't always handle the cold well, and a lot of Fairy-types were delicate no matter what the circumstances.[break][break]

His Comfey, for example. She's arranged her floral collection in her favourite spot: on top of her trainer's head.[break][break]

Joli pads at his side, as per usual. The Sylveon was a service Pokemon, forever kept out of his Pokeball as long as rules allowed it. He stays close to Florian as they walk, stopping only to sniff at the occasional bush. His Cutiefly, however, remains in her Pokeball for now. She'd given him quite the scare recently by getting lost in the forested expanse of Fortree City, and he wasn't ready for another heart attack so soon.[break][break]

A loud crash causes him to jump, hand fluttering to his heart as he glances around for the source of the noise.[break][break]

Spotting another trainer on the path, Florian lifts his hand in a friendly wave. "Hello!" he calls, the greeting coloured by a strong Kalosian accent. "Are you looking for the Galarians? And — oh, what have you done to that poor tree?"

Florian laughs at Alexei's horror, delighting in the expression on the other's face. "The woman who owned him was very sweet. She'd knit him little sweaters for the winter and everything." She'd owned other cats, as well, none of whom had the same plight as her poor Meowth. All of them had little winter coats, though not all of them tolerated them with the same grace as her hairless feline. "Ah, I do miss her."[break][break]

Last he'd heard, the old woman had passed away.[break][break]

Wooloo are a happier subject, and he focuses on them to avoid thinking about the painful parts of home. Apparently, the Lucario is not impressed with these fluff-covered companions, and Florian's brow lifts as Alexei scolds his Pokemon. It doesn't seem to be helping, serving only to further the dual-types jealousy. Florian wonders if the gym leader often goes off on these little fancies with new Pokemon, or if his Lucario is just the jealous type. He thinks it would be rude to ask.[break][break]

When Alexei grins, Florian can't help but grin back. It's infectious, lights up those purple eyes of his. "Aw, I'm sure he'll come around!" Florian encourages, patting the other man's shoulder playfully. "We should probably let the farmers know their flock are safe, and to perhaps fortify their fences in case those Mightyena come back!"

Florian is torn between amusement and pity as one of the more enthusiastic Wooloo rolls right into the fence. He can't help the laugh that escapes from behind his hand, brow furrowed in concern for the poor sheep pokemon. Alexei is already rushing up to check on the Wooloo, and Florian glances over at Vincent instead.[break][break]

He looks... annoyed? Exasperated? Both?[break][break]

Maybe he's jealous? Florian isn't sure, and he's not about to ask when the dual-type is standing right there. Instead, he switches focus to Alexei in time to see the Wooloo set safely on the ground.[break][break]

"Aw, I think they'd still be cute!" He thinks of the people that shave their Furfrou back home, how different the canines look when they've been all dolled up and styled. It would be a little different with these, of course. "Have you ever seen a hairless Meowth? I did, once. It was... very strange, but also very cute. Poor darling."[break][break]

Alexei, it would seem, has grown attached. Florian watches the Wooloo as they graze, nibbles his knuckle in thought. "Perhaps we could ask? Maybe as an alternative form of payment?" He shrugs. He wouldn't mind a Wooloo, he supposes, even if they weren't fairy-type. They were very sweet. Joli seemed to like them, too, trilling excitedly as one of the flock rolled after him.

Florian cants his head when Alexei's Lucario seems to put up some kind of a fuss. He can't read the Pokemon well, as it's not his own, but it's clear by the gym leader's reaction that something is amiss.[break][break]

This time? Florian can't help but wonder.[break][break]

"Is he often like this?" The fairy-type trainer gives his Sylveon a once-over to examine his injuries before setting him back on the ground. Joli immediately bounds off to play with the Wooloo, clearly not as injured as Florian had thought. His expression is sympathetic as he looks toward Alexei. "They can be difficult to read sometimes, no?"[break][break]

With the threat driven off, the bold members of the flock seem to venture away from the huddle they'd congregated into. Seeing them roll away from danger had been as hilarious as it was adorable, and watching them roll back was no less entertaining.[break][break]

"I wonder how it looks when their wool is shorn?" He giggles at the prospect. "I don't think I could bear to rob them of it!"

Florian giggles at the thought. Pokemon are often smarter than they're given credit for, and Ralts being part psychic-type certainly helped. "I hear they only appear to those with a positive aura." He spares a moment for melancholy, then. What if a Ralts never deemed him to be a worthy partner? He's not sure what determined a positive aura; was it deeds, personality, a simple luck of the draw? Perhaps the aura thing was a myth. His Pokedex was not always a font of flawless information, after all. "Gardevoir can be male, as well; perhaps they ought to be less selective."[break][break]

He's content to nod at Alexei's explanations. He knows much and more about Cutiefly, the tiny bug being a favourite of his, but he appreciates that the gym leader is a font of knowledge all on his own. Even among fairy enthusiasts, so many looked over Pokemon like Cutiefly because they were classified as bugs. A shame.[break][break]

Alexei does get his attention with the mention of a garden.[break][break]

"Oh, goodness, no wonder," he says, laughing at his own expense and shaking his head. "There are gardens all over Laverre. I had my own, as well, but we've been so busy with the move — I hadn't gotten around to planting, yet." There was the season to think about, as well. He had yet to do the proper amount of research on the Hoennian soil and ideal planting times, along with what species of berries and flowers might be considered invasive or simply wouldn't thrive. "I'll need to set up a little indoor garden for my poor darlings. Do you have much experience with gardening?" He tilts his head. "I imagine it's quite different here than back home. How are your winters?"

Florian watches on with concern as Joli faces down the duo of dark-type dogs, fearing for his partner in spite of knowing the Sylveon was as capable as he was spirited. He needn't worry — though only the sun is visible in the mid-afternoon sky, Joli closes his eyes and gathers what lunar energy he can. It coalesces in the air as a ball of bright, pink energy that launches toward one of the Mightyena just as Alexei is sending out his Lucario to deal with the other.[break][break]

Mightyena disappears in a haze of pink, and Florian winces as he hears its whimpering cry. Battle is a necessity, but that doesn't mean he has to enjoy hearing Pokemon in pain.[break][break]

As the moonblast fades, Florian is surprised to see that the Mightyena has struggled back to its feet. Joli growls at it in warning, but the determined mutt refuses to back down. Its fangs begin to glow red-hot, and Florian's eyes grow wide.[break][break]

"Joli, watch out!" [break][break]

His partner is already trying to dodge the attack, but the Mightyena's fiery fangs catch in his hind leg. Joli yelps in pain, then quickly spins around in the hound's grasp to bare his own fangs. They latch onto the scruff of his attacker with a draining kiss, holding fast until the other Pokemon goes limp in their grasp. Mystical energy glows around Joli's wound, healing it and (Florian hopes) dulling the pain, and the Sylveon trots back to his trainer with only a slight fault in his step.[break][break]

"You are brave, darling, but terribly reckless." Florian picks him up, laughs when Joli licks his nose. He looks over to Alexei. "I guess they were not wrong to expect trouble."

Florian has to take a moment, squinting a little as he tries to recall the map of Hoenn he now has hanging on his wall. He is most familiar with Slateport, and the route through Mauville that leads to Verdanturf. Fortree, as well, now; he thinks these mentioned places must be more out of the way, though he recognizes Petalburg as the name of a city. It sounds nice to Florian, though he's perhaps biased by the name.[break][break]

Ralts, however, he's familiar with. [break][break]

"Ralts are such interesting creatures! I've always wanted one of my own." They could be found in Kalos, not far from Lumiose, but Florian hadn't found the time to look before he'd moved on. "They're terribly shy, though. I hear they don't appear often."[break][break]

Alexei seems as excited to talk of Unova as Florian had been when they'd spoke of Kalos, and he's more than happy to indulge his newfound companion by listening with rapt interest. Mistralton in particular is a familiar name; he recognizes it from when he'd been looking at flights to Hoenn, before he'd ultimately decided on traveling by sea. "That is the city with the airport, no?" He smiles at the mention of mountains. He'd always liked the idea of them, even though Laverre itself was rather flat. "I have heard that the stars are beautiful above Snowbelle, but it is so cold there at night." He shakes his head. "I have never liked the cold much; my Pokemon, as well."[break][break]

Conversation stills as the Ribombee returns to them, Florian's eyes wide and searching as she flits around him and darts off. He doesn't need to be told twice — he follows with vigor, and nearly bursts into tears of relief when a tiny insect rushes him.[break][break]

"Abeille," he breathes, "oh, darling, I'm so glad to see you safe!"[break][break]

The Cutiefly flutters up to bump him on the nose, her favoured greeting, then flits around Jonquille and Joli. The latter takes a playful swipe at her, tail twitching.[break][break]

"Thank you, Carina," Florian tells the Ribombee with the same sincerity as he would display in human interaction. The same sincerity that's mirrored in the grateful look he passes Alexei. "And thank you, too. I don't know what I would have done if I couldn't find her, I—" He clasps a hand to his chest, shakes his head. "No matter, now. She is safe."
