she proceeds even without the other man's invitation to enter. perhaps, she's thinking he's also expecting this meeting to happen anytime soon.[break][break]

Fernando blinks emptily as he’s graced with another’s presence. The voice is familiar but not enough so that he can attach a name to it. When he looks up, a smile proliferates his features, breaking the strained creases of his forehead. “You shouldn’t have.” He laughs too, softly, in a surprisingly good mood compared to how Fernando typically portrays himself. Appearances are important and after losing Tapu Lele, Selena is the only other tether the League has to the Tapus.

“Things have been frantic but overall adequate with all things considered. We are very happy that Lilycove recovered quicker than I projected, although I planned for a worse case scenario.”

Fernando lowers the lid to his laptop, not quite closing it, but demonstrating how she has his full attention.

“How are things with you, Miss Demarais?”

even she can't imagine how the city can go back to its vigor at such a short time. after slateport, selena understands lilycove is someplace the league will want to maintain the sense of security. “all thanks to the families who devoted their resources for the city's speedy recovery.”[break][break]

she uncoats herself, folding the garment by her forearms before she makes herself comfortable on the seat across the councilor. “the memorial construction has been very exhausting physically and emotionally but it we seems that we managed.” she leans further into the table, fingers interlacing above the desk. “though i must say, people have become inconsolable with the death of the previous champion.”[break][break]

there's a tight-lipped smile painted on her face before she corrects herself. “champions.”[break][break]

He reads her body language as forwardness, which, in the line of a reporter, means prying. Still, he doesn’t understand Selena enough to gauge her intentions and allows her to continue. Politics is a game of wordplay and deceit. He knows it well and looks to parry her interest with nonsensical deflection. Who can blame him in a time of mourning.

“Indeed. A tragedy in itself. ALEXANDER STONE was a family friend as well as my best friend. We go back to when we were children. I mourn his passing every day, as will the region.”

He pauses, leaning back, as if contemplating.

“I do not know Talia well but our encounters have been nothing short of pleasant. I respect her work and her loss hurt myself and the League just as hard.”

Both were given their last rites in a tremendous ceremony sponsored by the organization. They were honored as heroes. Fernando cannot give enough thanks for Thomas Benoit and DAPHNE STONE for recovering their bodies.

He’s not sure what Selena’s here for but nothing will get in his way.

He already has two champions under his belt, it’s only a matter of time before he has three.

selena doesn't paint fernando with such sentimentality but she understands there are things one discovers at the face of losing someone, make it someone very dear or detested. “i don't know talia that much, too, but i can say the same. as for ALEXANDER STONE, i only wish i could know him more. he sure is loved by many.”[break][break]

“perhaps,” her fingers tap into the chair's armrest before rising from her seat and prodding at the bottle of wine. “a toast for both of them?” selena needs not to wait for his answer. after rummaging through his shelf, she produces two burgundies.[break][break]

surprise visits are best when you can actually surprise. for someone as level-headed as fernando, selena knows it can get a little tricky. all he ever does is to give her something to chew on, and so she reckons it's time to return the favor.[break][break]

And, in some sense, that statement holds true. But Fernando never truly clocks in. To live is to work and his tenure with the League is rife with undocumented hours. The last time he made an official work statement had been prior to Littleroot. Technically, he’s not on the ‘clock’.

With Selena taking the initiative, all he can do is spout words. It looks like he doesn’t have an option so he concedes. It’s a nice change of pace when the consequence is inconsequential.

“But in honor of such great people exceptions can be made.”

He reaches into his desk drawer to produce an untouched swiss pocket knife. It takes a moment for him to fumble through each blade, digging at the corkscrew with his fingernails. Once he plops it out, he brandishes it for her. He’s hedging the dryness and cleanliness of his workspace on her being more proficient in uncorking than he is.

“You mean the reports or the rumors?”

Surprise comes in many forms and many shapes. Having been on the opposite end of the hot seat, often in Selena's very position, Fernando prepare his statement ahead of time. It's in anticipation of illeana reyes's return and more importantly her departure.

selena purses her lips, frown beginning to curl as it is ultimately overturned when the councilor accepts the offer.

“in all honesty, i wouldn't force you with this if not for my father's insisting.” the desmarais of kalos took it upon themselves to slowly establish their name in the region in the aftermath of war, breadcrumbing their presence in some renovation efforts by using the patriarch's youngest daughter's name.[break][break]

after uncorking the bottle, she pours over decadence into the glasses. she hands over fernando's glass and cheers for him. “don't worry. i won't tell you on him if ever you didn't like it.”[break][break]

the pinkette props herself back on the seat, careful not to disturb her yawning boltund below. “anyway, what i've heard is tapu lele's desertion in meteor falls. then the head scientist went missing too, is that correct?”[break][break]

He says so before even sampling it, using the quip to buy time until he confirms she matches his cheers. Even so, he times it so that she samples from her glass before he commits to tasting it. It’s not that he doesn’t trust her — which he doesn’t; he trusts no one — but old habits die hard.

“Well that’s a way of putting it but I would say that’s far from accurate.”

He takes a moment to sniff at his glass, a bit late considering he’s already tasted it, before twirling it in place. How much should he really tell her? He mulls over this for an instance before committing to telling the ‘truth’. “At least Tapu Fini doesn’t seem to think so. But who’s to say Tapu Koko doesn’t know Lele better? Or perhaps you heard that from someone else?”

Fingers interlace as he sets his hands in front of him, leisurely resting at the corner of his desk and above his lap.

“illeana reyes is well and accounted for. She’s taking the chance to spend some time with her parents while recuperating from her injuries. Although my team sustain no major injuries, Reyes took the brute of our pain through her shared powers with Tapu Lele. Her efforts, along with kim cole-essam, were integral to our success.”

There’s no point in correcting her. Revealing too much or lacing his story with intricate details will only weaken the foundation of his bluff. As long as she seems satisfied, he’ll allow the topic to flow freely.

“It depends.”

His own MISTY TERRAIN spills over the crisp cut of his collar. It doesn’t expand out like it does in combat, instead hovering over him like a billowing veil. He can’t manipulate its shape into anything too rigid but it’s a world of difference compared to how their terrain is usually deployed.

“Every one is different. Pokemon, humans, contracts, they all have their own special stipulations.”

He smiles.

“After all, nothing is permanent.”

Outwardly deflecting the question would be too obvious so he played it off with the implication that he’s reading way too far into it. Reassurance comes after dismissal like a well paired wine with cheese. Focus too much on one and you lose sight of the other.

“I would say, if you’re in doubt about your actions and intentions then you’re better off not acting upon them.” The way the electricity dances from here mere presence arouses his interest, drawing his eyes in a way his MISTY TERRAIN can never demand. Watching little sparks burst in mid-air proves a poignant finish to the perfect distraction.

“You should consult with Tapu Koko if you’re worried about straying down the wrong path. If anyone should understand it, it should be you.”

selena responds to fernando's giggling with a nonchalant smile of her own. her growing veil of gold does not betray her display of excitement, knowing the councilor has led her exactly to the conversation she wants to have with him.[break][break]

“i think i'm confident to say i won't go down that path where i'll betray my pokemon's trust. what concerns me are the things that may contradict the principles we stand for, the things that we have no absolute control.”[break][break]

the pinkette leans on the back of her chair, arms crossed with the glass of desmarais on her right hand. pausing for a few seconds, her fingers are twirling the wine glass to see the spirits she begins dipping her toes in the water.[break][break]

[attr="class","spiral"]“Worrying about things you have no control over is not a train of thought I like to concern myself with.” Fernando can feel the huff catch in his throat but he never lets it pass his lips. While what she said has some merit, it’s too abstract for him to cement anything concrete. What he doesn’t mention is that her concept of control is as solid as the foundation of their organization.

He doesn’t worry about things he cannot control because everything can be controlled.

It’s only a matter of time and effort.

However, her last line catches his attention. Suddenly, the implications of their conversation, no matter how hypothetical, weigh more heavily than mere pandering. Naturally, Fernando knows little about the subject and his lack of knowledge misconstrues her intentions. What he sees is not an investigative journalist, but instead, a new Olivia Abbiati in the making.

At least this time she’s more subtle.

But he’s learned his lesson. This time he’ll stomp her out before she can gain traction. While the Aqua Initiative aligns with his own ideals, to allow someone else, something that’s not him, handle it unnerves him to no end. When it comes to delicate matters, the only person he trusts with such a task is himself.

“That’s a terrible idea.” Fernando straightens out his posture to look down at her, eyes narrowed as he gives her his full attention. “I appreciate the gift as well as the visit, but let me stop you there Desmarais. If you’re here to court your ideas for an initiative, especially one of that caliber, then let me inform you right now—”

Hopefully, this time he’s not too late.

"I am not the one.”
