[attr="class","spiral"] It’s not often Fernando leaves his office. It’s even rarer that he takes time out of his schedule to partake in such trivial activities. Shopping in-person is an outdated chore left for those too old to understand online shopping. For someone of his stature, even online shopping can be delegated to someone else. His time is too precious to waste, best utilized working or devolving into some type of shorthand debauchery.

“Evening."

And yet Silph finds himself courting Lilycove’s Gym Leader on a ‘date’ during their Christmas holiday.

The League cuts their work day early and Gym Challenges are cancelled for the week in order to allow Gym faculty a chance to enjoy time with their loved ones. The mandated break only applies to Government employees, evident in the way most stores remain open and well lit with holiday decorations. Plenty of sale posters line store windows, each more vibrant than the last, bold fonted numbers exaggerating their discounts in order to lure ‘street savvy’ shoppers.

“I hope you weren’t waiting long, Miss Desmarais.”

Despite the winter weather, Fernando’s attire remains the same. The only difference is an open black pea coat prepared just in case, and a silk scarf cait alfric had sent him for the holidays. Out of respect, he wears it whenever the weather drops, a small sentiment of appreciation for one of the few Leaguers that hold him in high regard.

not just because it is holiday but it is a date with councilor FERNANDO SILPH which warrants selena to wear her best dress. as usual, she laces her mind with suspicion and adorns her body with caution. on the surface, she clads herself with red and black fit for the festivities with a newly-bought wooloo furcoat she gets as a gift from her sisters.[break][break]

“it is worth the wait.”[break][break]

her employees in the vantage have been also released from work early, some of which are going home in their regions for the holidays, but she favors staying to supervise the remaining restorations in the city. not to mention the fact it has been three years since she last visited their camphrier chateau. while she maintains contact with her siblings, her relationship to her father is still rocky since her decision to acquit from the winery ancestry. she figures it is better to be buried at work than to deal with it.[break][break]

“i reckon you've already reserved us a place?” the pinkette wraps her arm around fernando's in an uncharacteristic overfriendliness, leading their way into the busy lilycove streets. “though, if you don't mind, there are a lot of good stuff on the streets, too!”[break][break]

His arm slackens at her touch, allowing her free reign to manipulate him until they settles on a fixed position to hold. Only then does he stiffen, taunt enough to match his personality, a perch set to ferry them through the wonderful accolade of Hoenn’s most luxurious outdoor shopping center.

“I suppose now I’ll have to live up to those expectations.”

Despite spending most of his time in Hoenn in Lilycove, Fernando does not presume to be an expert. Although he’s frequented many of the city’s restaurants and bars, how can he hope to compare to their actual Gym Leader? In lieu of his company, he allows Selena to guide them through the what the city has to offer.

“Anywhere you want. Today is my treat.”

His eyes linger between store fronts, curious to their displays, enraptured with how the stores decide to decorate as opposed to his more plain and minimalistic style of decor. “It’s not often I get to make a request of one of Hoenn’s most bedazzling characters.”

selena's giggle drowns in the noise of the lilycove holiday streets where people are relishing with holiday optimism. while there are those who are getting their last minute haul for gifts, there are also those like them enjoying the picturesque nighttime view of the coastal city sharing lilycove street food with their dates.[break][break]

few are poking glances at the unlikely pair walking alongside them in the promenade but dares not to disturb them in their time together.[break][break]

“most people, especially personalities, despise reporters and it's understandable in my line of job since i work not to be liked but to be rational and fair.”[break][break]

Fernando turns to look at her, smiling as if to reinforce the notion, but there's a glimmer of something more devious in the way his eyes lock onto her. Behind it is a hunger for something. With a lack of details, it's hard to tell just what it is he wants, but appearance alone seems to glimpse that there's something more beneath the surface.

"Information, when correct, leads to knowledge. Like puzzle pieces, if you have enough you can put together a picture no one else can see. That's what makes data beautiful."

It's a bit of a monologue from someone like Fernando but he's a bit out of his element here. This 'date' is little more than a well placed farce. His behavior models after every rendition of 'dating' he's seen in media so he goes along with the flow. Say something enigmatic to arouse her interest while showing passion. Or so he convinces himself as much.

His smile dies down when they come across the food stall and he nods in approval. "I heard it tastes better when someone feeds it to you, as long as you're not messy about it."

It goes without saying that Fernando pays for the meal, anything short of it being unacceptable considering his financial status. For now, he'll allow everything to simmer until it's time for him to pop the question and open up his agenda.

The truth is, Selena allows FERNANDO SILPH to be this gentlemanly because she wants to know how far he is willing to go to play this little mind game of theirs. His behavior patterns that of every other man they have probably seen millions of time in television. And as someone who works in the media, she obviously has an idea what kind of facade her date wants her to see.

“The thing is, there's no reassurance that the information will always be correct. Even data changes as time goes by. Nothing is permanent.”

She decides to bite back at his monologue, dragging the conversation to where it can possibly go.

“So when the pieces don't fit, you find ways to make it so. Create a new image. Create new information.”

Her arm is still in its place locked on the councilor's as the other points toward the piece she's craving. Their feet carry them further into the joint that smells of garlic and pepper, of oran and liechi, and of piloswine and miltank meat grilling. No wonder there is a long queue up ahead.

“Do you mind waiting? This place is really good, they say. Maybe it's worth it.”

The line ahead appears daunting considering how much time they have together. But in the spirit of their 'date' he dismisses it without second thought. "I trust your judgement," should be a good enough answer. Whatever affect the aroma has on him, he doesn't show it, playing it off as more of a concern for her enjoyment than his.

As she speaks, her eyes are focused on the food and not at his partner.

“So you use that tendency to your advantage. When people can't agree with one another, you get to their point-of-view and try to create your new image from there.”

That's pretty much the basics of journalism. You get to what people are interested and slowly build your case until you get to your point. And if things don't happen the way you want them to be, you just repeat the entire process altogether until it becomes hegemony. That's pretty much the basics of persuasion and perhaps, intimidation.

Sadly, not everyone has mastered the art of it.

And that's where the two differ. They both specialize in information, in a quest for more data, but their intend usage splits where their careers take them. For Fernando, Project Avalon comes before all else, at least until he can deem that the world will survive without it. Selena's aspiration takes her into the more immediate present, to shape the landscape of what the people of Hoenn believe.

"Oh. Looks shareable." His gaze narrows in on the example on the billboard menu and then some already being served to those in line. "And not too messy either." He humors her if only to keep the atmosphere agreeable. "Promise you won't spill on me?"

“Someone used to tell me that facts and opinions are two sides of the same of coin; that objectivity is a myth and no one is really free from having a bias.”

Because the moment people choose the details they consider, they are already making a choice. They are already making an opinion. Facts and opinion are always powerful and that's part of the reason why she's a slave to her current profession.

“He also tells me that a fact without interpretation of an opinion is plain useless, but an opinion without a factual basis is dangerous.”

She doesn't expect him to agree but she thinks he understands where she's getting at. After all, their duties and responsibilities as the League's representatives require them to tread with caution and awareness.

“Molding opinions is my job. But it's not like we don't deal with facts. After all, I'm bound to my oath of writing factual and informed opinions.” A promise she always strives to fulfill. “If anything, they even make our resolve stronger.”

When Fernando agrees with the meal of her choice, she finally makes her way to the long queue. This will take some time.

“Ha! Who says I'm willing to share? I have a huge appetite, mister.”

“Isn’t that the point of sliders?” His gaze settles on the menu and he shifts through several items. Their descriptions look promising but he has his doubts. That’s why he wants several items. Surely, one will match his palate.
