It was quite the difficult place to find. @chloe and him had only stumbled upon it by accident (Ruins of the Spiritkeepers), and it was constantly being searched for by cultists that Raziel Beckett and him had been on the precipice of investigating (For Their Sacrifice). After an extensive search (Grave Seed), and a little guidance from a recently captured Shedinja native to the area, however, Remiel had managed to establish a reliable route to the location.[break][break]

He'd planted the carrot seed at the center of a long abandoned garden, situated behind an ancient monastery in the perpetually fog-covered territory. Earl Grey the Sinistea had been left to attend to it in his absence, protecting it from any would-be thieves or wild pokémon. The black-haired royal had personally taken upon the horticulture himself, however, and had come here regularly to water his crop.[break][break]

Today was the day he would unearth it.

Crouching down beside the exposed root, with his Sinistea hovering over his shoulder, the cobalt-eyed prince placed on a gardener's glove before wrapping his fingers around it. With one swift pull, he yanked the carrot out and placed it upon his empty palm. It was rich in color, large in size, and quite... strange. As he stood up and straightened in posture, he would wipe away the dirt from its surface with his hand.[break][break]

TAMING THE HORSE

UPON RETURNING TO MT. PYRE, the same unnerving feeling of being watched returns. on this eerie mountain, your footsteps seemingly disappear in the mist that endlessly billows out from the earth. oddly enough, the time of day is obscured: it seems like you're in eternal night. this has never happened before and as you struggle to find a rational explanation for this phenomena, you instinctively hush yourself. a horse-like pokemon neighs in the distance. wreathed in spectral mists, a black equine pokemon hovers in midst the fog.

however, the horse seems to notice you. it advances close. the clopping of hooves is muted— or rather, it sounds like an ominous breeze surging in like a tide. suddenly, it disappears in the dense haze before reappearing behind you like a phantom.

A powerful presence sends a shiver through the possessed teacup's porcelain. Remiel feels it, too. The cloudy skies seem to darken. The temperature seems to drop. An unnatural mist sweeps through like a soundless wave. They're being watched.[break][break]

Then the echoing neigh of a horse draws their attention immediately.

Careful not to move, or perhaps unable to, the cobalt-eyed prince stands still as he watches it advance in mid-air. He's seen this horse before... somewhere. In his... childhood? Just as he thinks so, however, it disappears... before reappearing behind him.[break][break]

Earl Grey is the first to notice. And, quite out-of-character for him, the butler Sinistea sinks into its teacup and hides. Thankfully, as Remiel turns to face the spectral horse at a closer distance, the phantom shows no sign of aggression or fear.[break][break]

The prince spawns a faint smile. There's something terribly nostalgic about this. A familiarity that sinks to the core of his heart. Almost unwittingly, he holds up the purple carrot for the phantom to take with its mouth and eat. Somewhere in the recesses of his memory, a name comes to mind. He whispers it, fondly, as the horse eats. "Rocinante..."[break][break]

THE NEXT NIGHT, the you don't spot the horse; however, it does find you. reappearing some distance away, it remains still: an eerie image in the mist. like spectral scarves, the mountain's ominous fog passes through where the horse's pasterns should be.

The garden behind the ancient monastery is visited again. After an entire day of speculation, and odd dreams, Remiel is no closer to figuring out the specifics of his strange connection with the horse. He's come back with a box of fresh produce, however: a bundle of Grepa Berries.[break][break]

Thankfully, the spectral horse does indeed reappear.

Earl Grey keeps his distance this time as the prince and the phantom have their brief interaction. The teacup watches from afar, sitting upon the stone post of an old iron fence. It peeks out from the rim of its teacup as it gazes upon the haunting steed.[break][break]

Clouded skies. The aroma of fir. Hooves clopping across grassy plains as a man's voice, blurred and distant, shouts something at him. Fragments of memory return to him as he feeds the horse a Greta Berry out of his hand. Then, in a flash, it disappears once more.[break][break]

He'll come back tomorrow.

The third day arrived before long.[break][break]

This time, however, the horse's mane came... in less than an ideal state. Remiel had returned with more berries to feed it, but it didn't appear interested in them anymore. Somehow, the prince could tell it was distressed by the quality of its mane.[break][break]

Combing the mane with his own hand was to no avail. The horse was of a spectral nature, after all. It appeared to be able to manifest its body at will, but its mane remained in this state regardless. There had to be some other alternative.[break][break]

Gazing into the horse's eyes, and thinking, Remiel came up with a solution before too long.[break][break]

Plucking a luxury ball from the belt around his waist, the black-haired royal releases a Mimikyu. It spawns, as sleepily as ever, before gazing upon the beast before them. Immediately startled, the costumed fairy flinches back into retreat. Its master lulls it back, however, with a simple gesture.[break][break]

"Comb its mane with your claw-- gently." He commands, stepping back to watch the Mimikyu hesistantly begin to do its work. A long and extendable arm of shadow emerges from its tattered cloak. The clawed hand that leads it reaches up to the ghostly mane before stroking it. Seeing the two connect, Remiel smiles.[break][break]

When the grooming session ends, the phantom horse leaves.[break][break]

Astrid the Lucario finds no fear at the sight of the phantom horse. She, too, senses a mysterious bond of familiarity between the auras of Remiel and the Spectrier. The two seem equally as puzzled and hesitant to explore it further, however.[break][break]

Regardless, she was summoned with a job to do: free the spectral horse from a renegade spirit that had become entangled in its mane. Grabbing her wrist with a paw, she rose her arm and issued a powerful VACUUM WAVE. Still subject to the elemental forces, the leeching spirit tried desperately to hang onto the now flowing mane.[break][break]

But its efforts were in vain.[break][break]

And Hezekiah was right there to receive it.

Turning its back to the spirit, the dark hole upon its back seemed to darken further as it prepared itself to receive the wayward soul. A haunting wail filled the air as it continued to try and struggle. When Astrid positioned herself between it and the Spectrier, however, and bolstered the strength of her wave to push it in, it was over.[break][break]

The spirit was sucked into the mysterious black abyss of the Shedinja. Silenced in but a moment. And, when Remiel turned to face the phantom horse, it was already gone. He would come back again tomorrow to see it.[break][break]

THE NEXT NIGHT, you see the horse. the spectrier does not seem hesitant at all this time. instead, the horse appears to have been waiting for you, as if they were in tune with your rhythms. your schedule.

when you approach, the spectrier kicks you. hard. you fall to the cold, hard ground; however, when you lift yourself up, you find yourself peering down at your own limp body. you're not dead— however, your soul seems to have been separated from your physical form nevertheless. in this odd, spectral realm, the horse grants you a test. in its mouth, a narrow wisp of spirit acts as reins.

asking you to mount its black back, the spectrier intends on testing your mettle. this ghostly world is disorienting. nauseating. however, it intends on galloping through the steep mountain's rugged terrain to see if you can hang on for dear "life."

TAME THE HORSE:

REIN IT IN!

WITH EVERY POST, make a ROLL. you must hit or surpass a total of 100 to successfully hang on to the spectrier; furthermore, the horse is examining your ability to ride it!

A startling turn of events.[break][break]

If Remiel had to guess, he had just died. He blinked, looking curiously around at this distorted, haunting realm. If his experience and knowledge of Ghost-type pokémon were as limited as that of your average Hoennian, he might have lost his mind then and there. Instead, he took whatever constituted as a 'deep breath' in this state, and stepped forward to accept the Spectrier's challenge.[break][break]

"I might have had a ritual for that, you know," He remarks, casting a passing glance at his physical body and the bruise growing around his eye. Quite smoothly, he grabs the spirit reins and jumps onto the phantom horse's back-- and that's when things immediately stop being easy. "That's quite the unsightly bruise you've-- KYAA!"[break][break]

The Spectrier kicks off like a rocket. The scenery surrounding them becomes a blur of rocks and trees and ghostly purple smoke. The prince manages to brace himself, hanging on tight and taking proper posture as it gallops along. But for how long?[break]

His mind snaps back to the present. The 'two-point seat', right. A rider's job was to stay up off the horse's back and find balance. Rather than fight against it, he would learn its stride; adapt. If only he could grab onto its mane-- and he stops, realizing he's as much a spirit as the mane flowing in front of him. Reaching forward to snatch a bundle of it with his ghostly hand, he lifts himself up from its back a few inches carefully.[break][break]

The gallop through the mountains is dizzying and haunting. But he focuses the entirety of his attention on himself and the Spectrier he rides. He knew this horse's stride... it was familiar. He knew this horse.[break][break]

"Don't... don't you remember me, Rocinante?!"[break]

The Spectrier neighed; defiant.[break][break]

Rounding a sharp curve, Remiel had to hold on tightly as he felt his entire body nearly slide off the horse's back altogether. He wasn't certain what would happen if he let go or if he was thrown off. The abyss beyond the cliff's edge, like a Shedinja's hole, was dark and foreboding. He didn't imagine it led to anything good.[break][break]

When the corner was complete, and the Spectrier found another relatively straight trail of mountainpath to stride across, the royal immediately set out to regain the balance he'd lost. Fold forward at the hips, he reminded himself. At a forty-five degree angle. Centered and balanced. Chest lifted and open. Shoulders relaxed.[break][break]

And chin up, boy! The voice of the stableman exclaimed from the recesses of his past.

Determined to make Rocinante see sense, the black-haired prince shortened the reins with a single hand for control, keeping the other at the Spectrier's mane for balance. Testing this balance, he leaned forward to speak into the phantom horse's ear.[break][break]

"You must remember me! Enough of this folly!"[break]

It shook its head, either stubborn or enraged as it forced Remiel to lean back again. The two had been the closest of friends in the past, back when Rocinante had once been a Mudsdale. But, of course, this was before the... accident.[break][break]

Recalling why the horse now had reason to be angry, the prince sighed-- a gesture that was quickly sucked back in as a gasp when he felt his impromptu steed begin to rise from the mountainpath they once strode across. Empowered by its fury, the Spectrier was flying now! Maintaining its gallop, it curved upward until it became parallel against the face of the grey cliffs.[break][break]

Unfortunately, this left Remiel literally hanging from the Spectrier by its reins, struggling to hold on. "I'm... I'm sorry for what happened! You were a good horse! And... and for a time you were my only friend!" He admitted, his fingers slipping one-by-one. "Please... come back to me!"[break]
