Casinos were places tailored to the determination of wealth. Where all that mattered were one's riches and luck, and even then the former dictated the latter. It was Miles' duty to liberate that wealth from the patrons by playing the games in question, games that were, of course, rigged in his favour. A means of collecting earnings from the bar, he was tonight's 'lucky winner' a role he found himself enjoying more than he'd care to admit seeing as this place worked directly against the closest thing he had to a code, Still it was a night without blood, and sometimes that was the best he could ask for.

He was to drink, play a few games engineered for his success, secure a bag, and make off into the night. In order to keep eyes off the happenings in the casino, a different grunt was chosen every month for the duty, he just happened to be the lucky grunt of the evening.

The night was half over and soon he found himself on the balcony of the establishment a glass of wine in hand and slightly weary in body. But his act holds because it has to. It's why he decides to lean against the balcony (glass of wine stirring) offering the vaguest opener to whatever body was closest to him

For the most part, security and surveillance over the gambling scene had all but gone cold. Since Rocket's heartwarming announcement, no real action had been taken to keep tabs on just what sort of nefarious deeds happened under the table in Slateport's high-end casinos.[break][break]

And frankly, it was the least of the League's concerns. As often as money laundering and skimming of the top happened, it put money back into the economy to some degree. Slateport was in far better shape now and as a result of these actions than they had been previously. What the League didn't keep a close eye on wouldn't hurt them, for now.[break][break]

If she was being honest, Stormy had absolutely no reason to be here. Her own money wasn't funding the tables and she wasn't blowing kisses into the palms of rich dudes to act as their good luck charm. She wasn't here for work, either, having zero intention of catching anyone with their hands in too many cookie jars.[break][break]

Rather, she was merely enjoying a night off while staring off the side of a balcony. With a cool drink in hand and the chill of night brushing warm cheeks, she inhales slowly, savouring the fresh air. Behind her, the bustle and excitement of people inside fade into background noise. So much so that she nearly misses the young man that had joined her. Or had he always been there?[break][break]

"Not nearly as much as you have, it seems."[break][break]

She angles herself to face him, and her eyes look him up and down briefly, noting the weariness and the glass of wine. [break][break]

“Just a touch of sadness on a poetically beautiful evening. Nothing a conversation with an appealing stranger can’t save me from.”

Beautiful, vaguely familiar, perhaps an actress or something along those lines? He dives for an answer, but its too cloudy to reach at the moment. He’d sacrificed that clarity for peace of mind tonight. It’s a trade he’s yet to regret.

There were a wealth of worries that threatened to spill into the man, worries that his glass held comfortably at bay, the true savior of the night thus far.

“Miles, and who do I have the honor of branding my evening’s hero.” the researcher doesn’t miss a beat his eyes acutely focused on his new partner still attempting to decipher where exactly he’d seen her.

His charming admission admittedly surprises her. It is written in the way her eyes widen and she stares back at him blankly. [break][break]

An appealing stranger?[break][break]

Stormy regards him thoughtfully, a small smile creeping onto her soft features. The woman lifts her glass to her lips, masking her surprise behind the rim of her wine. The man across from her introduces himself, even being so forward as to announce her his 'hero'. This statement is the one that manages to slip through her defenses. She chuckles quietly, averting her gaze briefly as warmth momentarily rushes to her cheeks.[break][break]

"I wouldn't go that far, I'm hardly a hero, just a stranger on the balcony, same as anyone else."[break][break]

But she holds out her hand for him to shake anyway, watching him thoughtfully.[break][break]

"Stormy. It's a pleasure, Miles."[break][break]

And it’s on that note he reaches for hers sharing a shake. He smiles, though his mind lingers for a moment shifting between how cute his conversation partner happened to be and his inability to protect the woman he’d just spoken of. His his gaze would leave hers moving to the cityscape that was Slateport fearingHe’d stared too long.

It was a blemished city, even here he could see cranes in the distance structures only half rebuilt, but in those blemishes there was beauty, despite everything it was full of life, hope.

“What do you think of Slateport, Stormy? If you had to describe it in a single word what would it be?” he takes a sip making note to pace himself now, a slip of the tongue could lead to disaster, disaster that the poison stirring in his hand was known to cause.

"Hmm.. I suppose I've never thought of it like that. She sounds like an incredibly smart and kind woman."[break][break]

The same could not be said for her own, though admittedly her memory of the woman had been slipping lately. It brings Stormy a pang of discomfort and unease at the thought. Her rose-coloured glasses had made everything into a red flag, even, perhaps, the good things that her mother had done for her.[break][break]

She swirls the wine in her glass, an attempt to clear her head.[break][break]

For a long moment the two seem to be lost in thought and lost in each other, as well. Miles is the first to look away, and Stormy's attention follows not long after. He is drawn to the skyscrapers and the cranes, the blinking lights of the city. Even this late into the evening the city was still alive with noise and excitement. [break][break]

"Hmm..."[break][break]

Stormy takes a deep breath, shifting so that she leans against the balcony now. Her attention sweeps over the city quietly, thoughtfully. It takes her a while before she comes up with an answer.[break][break]

"Alive. Or maybe 'reborn'. Despite all of the war and the fear and the pain, this city manages to pick up its pieces over and over again and keep on going. It's thriving, really."[break][break]

When she spoke of the late Leona Sharp Miles could only nod, He’d be damned if he didn’t know it, she deserved better than he could have ever given.

As the conversation transitions the researcher finds his attention had been commanded by his conversation partner her response much like the city was full of hope. While she leans over the banner he finds his back against it neck craning to watch both the woman and the city, and while the focus was shared it was nowhere near equal.

“Reborn...” he repeats it to himself An answer to remember one that I like more than my own.” He doesn’t disagree, and though his own thoughts followed different lines hers were appreciated and brought a feeling that was difficult to describe.

“I see tenacity.” He begins, “A city even more, a country of people who will not let the circumstances beat them regardless of what they may be.” His whole body turns to face the metropolis. “They will fight as long as they need to and they will sacrifice for their home until it is safe. And in that how many will fall through the cracks?

“That’s why I believe peace must be achieved sooner than later. The people of Slateport, of Hoenn definitely have the strength and fortitude to weather whatever storm comes, but they shouldn’t have to.” And therein lied a portion of his sadness. “But all anyone seems to see on the horizon is war and that scares me.

Sorry, his focus returns to the woman, Party foul I know but that’s what’s been on the mind, well that and a particularly perceptive, kind woman who I’ve had the pleasure of spending a portion evening with. “

Stormy exhales quietly through her nose, and when she breathes in she is reminded of the city-smells that rise above the city limits. The smell of smoke, the smell of cars and gasoline and fuel. The smell of a city being rebuilt and putting in every effort and length they could to return to once was. At the same time she felt it had been reborn, she felt a twinge of guilt or apprehension about it. They were retracing footsteps, but were they improving?[break][break]

"I agree."[break][break]

She is breathless as she admits this, her voice noticeably pained. He was right to question things, to feel uncertain. Stormy certainly did.[break][break]

"All anyone sees is fear, and fear is a powerful motivator both for hope and for war. It is unfortunate."[break][break]

The woman lowers her gaze and straightens her posture, pushing away from the banner. Once again, the man sharing the balcony with her catches her attention and she is drawn to it with curiosity. His well-mannered speech and his compliments continue to surprise and intrigue her. Like a moth to flame, she seems inclined to bask in it.[break][break]

"I like company that can speak with honesty and talk about what's really on their mind."[break][break]

She smiles, inclining her head towards the casino. Her glass is nearly empty and she seems inclined to rectify that.[break][break]

"You flatter me, Miles. Would you like to join me for another drink?"[break][break]

"Well then you're in luck, I have too many worries to count, and speaking on them is all I seem to be able to do." A true statement at the moment, shaping one's path didn't happen in a day, but he'd assumed more reigns on his life and fate as of late, and while that path led to places the analyst couldn't excuse, he'd continue to walk it in the name of the peace he sought for his home.

"There's nothing I'd like more." In this den of greed Miles found something...someone worth hanging onto even if they were transient fated to disappear by daybreak, or perhaps it was reversed in that he was the transient one, unable to remain. A Cinderella whose magic was ticking with each passing second.

It's almost on cue. as he feels eyes on his back glances from afar. It was time to get back to work and close out for the evening. lest he hold up the staff, most of whom were already uncomfortable with the terms of the pickup, His carriage was set to mold itself back into a pumpkin.

" However," that eager smile was now tinted with a slight sadness. "I have to go for the evening. An appointment to keep." Leaving it here was best, if they continued he'd be a danger to her after all he was regarded as a criminal by society regardless of how noble he felt his goals were.

But the alcohol speaks, or rather it makes that internal voice the one he's prone to smothering with rationale, and logic louder. He doesn't need to hear it because it's apparent even to that very same rationale. Accepting that transience here and now would be a mistake. The man couldn't remember the last time he'd vocalized even a portion of his concerns.

Fuck it.

"Hey, I know I have to leave, but I'd be a colossal idiot if I didn't at least pose the question." He speaks quickly not because he's rushing to leave, but because he wants to stay. and for all the researcher's wordiness and wisdom he can't grasp how to say it. He was leaving himself vulnerable, something the scientist hadn't done for many months so many that he seems to have forgotten how.

"There's a place I'd like to take you to, or rather ask you to accompany..." He takes a breath deciding to take it from the top. "Maybe we share that second drink in a week or so if you're free and if you have the time maybe we mold that drink into a date?"

Some things were best-left simple.

"That in itself is a skill not everyone has, to be able to speak freely about their worries. It's the first step to addressing them."[break][break]

Or so she assumed. Speaking on them from her own experience had delivered conflicting results. While at the same time it lifted some of the dread and the doubt from her chest, it didn't always solve her problem. It merely put the worry on someone else for a moment.[break][break]

She smiles as they make their way into the casino, the warmth of several bodies washing over them. He stops, however, which catches her off guard and draws her to a halt. People pass them by on either side and yet they seem stuck in time, unaffected by everything around them.[break][break]

"Oh, I see. Then I shouldn't keep you longer than I already have."[break][break]

But once again the man's honesty pushes through barriers of self-doubt and uncertainty. She is mesmerized by it, drawn in by his candor. Despite how long it takes him to breathe life into his request, she waits, searching his face for his intent before he can even say it out loud. Warmth lingers in her cheeks, a side effect of his forwardness and her wine.[break][break]

"I'd be making a mistake if I said no."[break][break]

She fishes in her pure for a napkin. The only pen on hand is a thin tube of eyeliner and she scrawls her phone number across the canvas with ease. With two fingers, she extends the napkin toward him. Her eyes are dark with thinly veiled desire, and she smiles.[break][break]

"I'm looking forward to seeing you again, Miles."[break][break]
