She could pick out Killian’s voice from anywhere. She heard it before she was caught a glimpse of him speaking to Hijack in the distance, “Ugghh, stop it – just – stay there,” Lex growls in frustration, using both hands to keep the small Eevee on one of her shoulders. Killian and Loveless made it look so easy. The kit mewed in frustration, restless moving and clawing at the fabric of her jacket, looking for a way down, “Ow!” she gasped as claws sunk past the jacket and into her skin, “Fine, down you go, stay close,” defeated, the redhead set the Eevee down on the dark grass, sighing as they approached. The Eevee sprinted ahead, running up to Killian and immediately rubbing against his legs.

“Hello there, handsome,” she grinned, moving close enough to plant a kiss on his cheek, “The little brat was being . . . well, a brat,” she glanced down towards the Eevee who was now hopping around Killian’s feet, standing on two legs, asking to be held. Lex frowned, “Oh so now you want to be held . . . I think she hates me,”

TAMING THE HORSE

UPON RETURNING TO MT. PYRE, the same unnerving feeling of being watched returns. on this eerie mountain, your footsteps seemingly disappear in the mist that endlessly billows out from the earth. oddly enough, the time of day is obscured: it seems like you're in eternal night. this has never happened before and as you struggle to find a rational explanation for this phenomena, you instinctively hush yourself. two horse-like pokemon neighs in the distance. wreathed in spectral mists, the black equine pokemon hover in midst the fog.

however, the horses seem to notice you. they advance close. the clopping of hooves is muted— or rather, it sounds like an ominous breeze surging in like a tide. suddenly, they disappear in the dense haze before reappearing behind you like a phantom.

Killian chuckles, watching the Eevee as it bounces around his legs. "Isn't that why you like her?" he teases playfully. Despite her pleading, he doesn't pick Endless up from the ground.

"Hate you? Impossible." he assures Lex with a smile. "She's just a little hyperactive. Loveless was the same way when she was a kitten." not that you'd be able to tell.

"Give it some time she'll -"

He stops, the sudden night and thickening of the mist catching his attention. Tension fills his muscles as two figures approach from the darkness. As they draw closer, Killian realizes what they are.

"Spectrier, I wonder what they want?"

Killian follows their eyes to a pair of carrots growing near his feet. It doesn't take much to put two and two together. "Ah, they must be hungry." he reaches down to pull the carrots from the earth. He hands one to Lex.

"Here, why don't you try feeding one." he does the same.

Her shoulders shrugged lightly as she glanced back down at Endless, “Yeah, I guess I got what I wanted,” she sighed, fighting the urge to pick her up off the ground again. Lex could be a push over for a cute pokemon.

Lex didn’t notice the thickening of the mist until Killian cut himself off mid-sentence. Her brows pinched in curiosity as to what had grabbed his attention. Amber eyes followed his gaze into the mist as two dark figures began to appear, “Spectrier?” she repeated once Killian said their name. Of course, he knew what they were.

“Carrots?” Lex suddenly remembered she had thrown some seeds in the ground here what seemed like forever ago. She didn’t remember what grave she planted them by but it wasn’t impossible that these may be them, “Ok,” she responds with caution, as she took a carrot from Killian.

“Stay here,” she said firmly to the Eevee as they approached the pokemon. Used slowly, deliberate movements in an attempt to not spook the pokemon, “Here ya go,” she said softly, holding out the carrot in the open palm of her hand for the Spectrier to take when comfortable.

It seemed Killian was right, they wanted the carrots. Each one gingerly plucked the treat out of their hands and ate them quickly. Lex was delighted at the sight, completely surprised that they felt comfortable enough to take the carrots right out of their hands. Just a quickly as they appeared, the two disappeared as a thick mist enveloped them, “What?!” she gasped, frantically looking around, “Where’d they go?”

THE NEXT NIGHT, you don't spot the horses; however, they do find you. reappearing some distance away, they remain still: an eerie image in the mist. like spectral scarves, the mountain's ominous fog passes through where the horses' pasterns should be.

"Spectrier is a legendary Pokemon. They're usually only found in Galar, though. Why two of them are in Hoenn is beyond me." maybe it had something to do with all the chaos Rocket was stirring up.

Killian shrugged as they vanished. "No idea. Maybe they'll be here again tomorrow."

The next night, Killian and Lex returned to find the horses. A bit of searching turned up no results. He'd been about to suggest leaving when the spectral mounts appeared.

They're hesitant to approach, but a bit of coaxing with a Grepa Berry manages to convince them to step closer.

"They're so skittish."

Lex was hesitant to return, expecting their effort to find the Spectrier to be fruitless. After searching Mt. Pyre, she thought her suspicions would be confirmed. Instead, the equine found them, much to her surprise.

Killian Decker thought it would be a good idea to bring along another treat. He was right, like always. After some coaxing the Spectrier took the Grepa Berries from their hands before promptly disappearing again, “Yeah, no kidding,” she frowned, searching the mist again for their shadows to no avail.

“Try again tomorrow night?” she grinned, glancing at Killian.

Unlike last time, the horses are waiting for them. Their manes a knotted and tangled mess from doing Arceus knows what. Killian smiles at them, offering a friendly nod as they approach.

"They must have been doing rough for their hair to get so messy." he turns to the beauty standing beside him. "It looks like they're starting to trust us. Maybe they'll let you comb out their hair?"

He'd do it himself, but Killian lacks a Pokemon capable of untangling their manes.

There they are, already waiting for them when they returned to Mt. Pyre. The horses keep surprising her, “Yeah, I wonder what they got up to,” she laughs lightly. Couple of troublemakers? Right up Lex’s alley, “Yeah, maybe,” she thinks for a moment before extracting a pokeball. A flash of light brings forward her Purrloin, a gift from Killian.

The redhead scoops the kitten up in her arms and slowly approaches the horses, “Alright, let’s be gentle” she coos to the kitten, “Let’s try a Shadow Claw to untangle this mess,” Lex stands beside one of the Spectrier while the Purrloin gently combed out the mess with dark claws, “Here, you do the other,” she smiled, handing Killian the kitten.

As soon as the last tangles of Killian’s Spectrier were combed out the two horses faded away . . . again. Lex sighed, expecting it at this point, “Tomorrow it is.”

They've come back and forth to this mountain so many times now. They might as well build a house atop of it. Still, it should be worth it once this is all said and done.

Tonight the horses are being plagued by spirits. They cling to the air around them unnaturally. Killian frowns. "They can't seem to keep themselves out of trouble." it reminds him of a certain redhead.

Thankfully, he's come prepared this time. From borrowed Poke Balls, he releases two Pokemon. A Shedinja and a Hitmonlee. "Stay here and have the Shedinja point back-first at the Spectrier. I'm going to go to the other side with Hitmonlee. Be sure to hold to the Shedinja." Killian makes his way around the horses.

He waits for Lex to give him the signal before ordering Hitmonlee to use Vacuum Wave. If things work like he's hoping, the sudden blast of wind should push the spirits into the opening on Shedinja's back. Where the undead bug will devour them whole.

They find the specters back on top of Mt. Pyre. Waiting for them. Interesting. The spirits that plague them bring a frown to her face. With all the bonding they had been doing, she felt a sense of protectiveness over the beasts. Of course, Killian came up with a brilliant plan. Lex held the Shedninja firmly, bracing herself for any sort of recoil as the VACUUM WAVE pushes the spirits past the Spectrier and towards her and the pokemon. She closes her eyes and flinches as the forceful gust of air forces the spirits into the void. Lex peeks at the horses just in time to watch them fade away.

Another frown. She felt like she was just being used at this point.
