being underwater reminded kyle of his previous excursion. most people would have associated the depths to something unsavory, but kyle has grown some kind of resistance towards it after just a few years of hoenn.

he doesn't know sign language to communicate with razz underwater, so he opts for something more convenient. with his phone in a waterproof phone case, he types in a brief message just before they officially start a match.

this spot ok?

he shows the phone to razz instead so he doesn't have to send it. who knows if this deep underwater even received cell coverage. he'd guess yes since the pokemon world is super advanced and they were just a few ways off from the coast.

While battling in the water was nothing really knew, battling underwater against a trainer wasn't something he go to do often. So when he was paired up against Kyle his interest did peak. Even if his luck made him go up against Hoenn's champion. Not only that he doesn't feel to comfortable about having to raise his bandana to reveal his burn scar as his goggles and air mask wouldn't fit well otherwise. [break][break]

He follows along before Kyle picks a spot. Razz gives an okay and Aqua ends up translating =He says okay!= The ranger gives the Rotom a look before signing something =He says I didn't need to translate that! Wait.. oh me haha= they give a nervous laugh before Razz calls out his Lanturn, feeling it was the best pokemon for this. [break][break]

the first move is given to him.

he would've opened his mouth to give a command had the breathing apparatus on his mouth not remind him that he cannot do it. he can only run his hand up from his forehead and sweep his hair back when he realizes that his eelektross will have everything in his whim in terms of battle style for this match.

the eelektross is quick to spew an acid spray from its mouth towards the lanturn. murky liquid was shot like a jet before it spreads throughout the water and contaminates it with a corrosive solvent, providing some sort of smokescreen that's painful to touch.

Maybe using the Lanturn was a mistake he realizes as while using the in the name of typeage and not being at a disadvantage. He puts himself at a disadvantage anyways as they were not a pokemon very used to battling without his commands like some of the others. So it seems more confused than anything when the first attack comes and his trainer doesn’t give an order. So the so the acid spray hits it’s mark poisoning her first turn. Well this was going to be a problem. [break][break]

She ends up quickly swimming away, shaking her head as if they would make her feel better. Razz would sign to his Rotom, =Use Signal Beam!= [break][break]

Was this cheating? Ah ell at least the Lanturn wasn’t as confused as she used the attack

the signal beam cuts through the blot on the water, managing to hit the source of it straight on. this enrages the elektross, which forces it to go on full offensive.

he quickly gets jealous when razz gets his own rotom phone with him underwater and he forgot his. on hindsight, however, he'd have to type everything out underwater instead of signing it, and that was difficult to do with wrinkly underwater thumbs. maybe it wouldn't have mattered in the end anyways.

after all, it would take him approximately double the time to type an instruction out and send it than the time it takes for his pokemon to use a move kyle wouldn't have commanded normally.

there were a number of pokemon that has volt absorb, and lanturn was one of them. kyle can only pinch the bridge of his nose when sees signs of wild charge from his eelektross as it goes straight for the lanturn.

Looks like they lucked out there as their opponent tried to use WILD CHARGE to try and crash into her. Though rather than avoid it she would challenge it. As Kyle's pokemon came at them Lanturn rushed back using TAKE DOWN to counter the Wild Charge. The only pain she took was from her own recoil damage. Aside from that she absorbs the electricity coming from the other. Recovering from the previous attack, and some of the poison damage. Looks like they just bought them more time in this fight.[break][break]

Some hand movement and an order from Aqua later Lanturn uses BUBBLE BEAM against their opponent with the intention of having them lose some speed. As it was, Razz still felt they might be at the disadvantage so slowing down the other could help.

the lanturn's attack gives it enough room to attempt to overwhelm the eelektross with its bubble beam. it starts to build up and give something for the eelektross to go through on, but being slowed down wouldn't stop it.

with its aggression still trained on the dual-type, it attempts to power through the bubble beam regardless of whatever it does to him. once it gets bothered by it, it starts to crunch its way through the wall of bubbles until it can reach the lanturn.

the rows of teeth wouldn't stop until it finds its target.

The water Rotom comments out loud which earns them a look from their trainer. =Sorry= though they're not wrong as despite the Bubble Beam the eelektross pushes through with ease. Crunched down harshly, her antenna will charge up and use SIGNAL BEAM to try and knock the Champion's pokemon off. [break][break]

Wouldn't take much now, =Use CHARGE=

brief contact from the lanturn was all it took for the eelektross to start giga draining the water-type from the wound's punctures.

the signal beam interrupts the feast, pushing the deep-sea predator away from the lanturn. it breaks from the lanturn, but it doesn't stop it from acting again.

the pokemon's aggressive nature still shows despite the denial. it remains stubborn as it charges right back at the pokemon, trying to continue its giga drain that it got deprived of.

She tries, she really does, and Razz wouldn't fault her for the lose. However even as she uses the CHARGE to power up in order to use ELECTRO BALL at the eel pokemon. He is hit once more with the Giga Drain, and once their opponent lets go the lanturn would have the comic dizzy eyes as she would start floating. [break][break]

The rotom Drone watching the battle would make a noise. =Winner is Champion Kyle Lopez!= it would announce and Razz sighs, and his streak was going good. Oh well. He points up asking if get out of the water?

kyle recalls the eelektross faster than it can move again as soon as he sees it deal the final blow on the lanturn. there's a sneaking suspicion that the pokemon was actually sadistic, though it never really manifested before. better safe than sorry, however.

kyle gets razz's signal to go up the surface as soon as their battle ends. he'd rather have a pokemon carry him back, though he'd rather keep the eelektross in its ball after having its taste in battle. caution precedes comfort this time.

he waits until both of them are above water.

"good game," he tells razz. "that bubble beam's would've actually been clutch if used against a less physically strong 'mon to be honest."

Razz takes a moment to enjoy the fresh air, as while he was used to being underwater going down for a battle definitely felt different. As Kyle explains how his lanturn was close, "Think its my fault for trying to use an electric type against a rumored electric expect too," he replies with a small hint of a joke as he calls out his Milotic and grabs hold to ride on top of her body. The tender pokemon offering her tail to give the champion a ride toward shore. [break][break]

"So you're champion, I bed this is an exciting festival for you," because why wouldn't the man who is titled to be best trainer in the region enjoy it right? He's not trying to be rude, as he's more curious than anything.

he takes the offer and rides the milotic alongside its trainer, unable to use his own pokemon for transport ever since it got worked up too much from the battle.

"the only reason i went for mono-electric is because type matchups are easy to figure out for them to be honest," he confesses with a chuckle. "i hope people don't really think i'm an expert with them."

the small talk is appreciated, especially knowing the ranger's character. he'd give him a head ruffle for being able to steer a conversation if he could.

"i've been attending since i was a kid! it's pretty exciting since then, yeah." he wasn't big on battles before, though the general atmosphere of the festival did change his stance at least once per four years before. "what's your thoughts on it so far? the mood's pretty chill, right?"

"Really? My mistake, I think I just read a bad article then, when you first became champ there seemed to be a floodgate of things about you, how do you handle such attention?" he can't help but ask because he feels he'd die from stress if situations were reverse. Razz pouts a bit as the other attempts to ruffle his hair, now that's three people who do it. Though admittedly it doesn't really bug him. [break][break]

"Uhhh I'm not sure it's still only a few days in," he comments as hes 'fixing' his hair, "I'm not big on battles, but my pokemon have been enjoying themselves, though I really have to thank you, you've been my first lost and my win loss rate was getting me paranoid"

"just ignore them. no one really acts on it in my face," he tells razz. "and you get numb to the public's opinion on you get used to it." he chuckles, trying to think of which news article it was. "why are you asking this anyways?" he prods.

despite the prodding, kyle dismisses it entire soon after. "anyways," he says.

"no one worth their salt really tracks their win/lose ratio around here," he tells razz. it was at least based on his experience. of course, those willing to improve care, but that escapes kyle's thoughts for a moment. "if anyone does, you're free to call them a tryhard."

the talk about being a tryhard reminds him of what he got from talking with noah faber a dinner before. gossip wasn't something he partook in frequently, but there's no harm in leaking some word of mouth.

"have you heard about gym leaders taking bets though?" he asks him.
