once again, he sits on one side of a dodgeball court, the only thing separating the two teams a line drawn in the sand. this time, rather than the teams being split into "shirts" and "skins", they are labeled with blue and red. a dark blue band sits wrapped around jayden's arm.

[break][break] several people and pokemon line up on opposite sides of the court. the captain of the blue team is jayden, who holds a dodgeball in a one-handed grip. he is not looking at anyone else, however.

[break][break] around him, the projections of his ghost-type pokemon flicker in and out of view, taking eager opportunity in devouring the negative emotions that seem to wrap around him in waves. he is staring down at the floor in front of him, not paying attention to his surroundings.

[break][break] that is until a bell rings, signaling the start of the match. the power of his murkrow's tailwind aiding him, jayden flung his arm forward.

rubber was held between two death grips, silhouetted by an animalistic smirk. like a predator on the high of adrenaline, heavy, stalking steps pace the line between two teams. in-truth, the other members of king's team were surprised he did not devolve into savage growls or snarls.

the kid in middle-school that tries way too hard in casual school sports?

as the action starts, alpha company signals a NO RETREAT and their resounding war-cry fills the blood of their team. instead of instantly backing down, they push forward, tossing rubber with no discrimination.

all were victims.

a half dozen fell in the first volley, on both sides and king's laughter echoes.

KING WAYLAND comes craving violence. blood. war.

[break][break] he will be met with silence.

[break][break] jayden for his part is not a competitive person — at least it's not something he has ever thought of. there are some people - like king - who may have spent their whole lives blood-thirsty, craving, clawing up some invisible ladder of ambition, chasing the shadows of former friends and a past they can't run away from. for jayden? his successes have always been foregone conclusions. absolutes.

[break][break] if he did not obtain success, there would be death.

[break][break] there was nothing dramatic about it.

[break][break] but this - but today - feels different. as jayden holds rubber balls in his own white-fisted grip, there is something deep and churning in his chest. it isn't quite anger. it isn't quite despair.

[break][break] his opponents charge forward, jayden's team does so as well. the balls make a beeline for their opponents, knocking some off their feet. as an equal barrage attacks them, his krokorok's EARTHQUAKE shakes the ground to it's core, throwing off some more opponents of their feet. jayden finds himself ducking, running forward, and throwing another ball at a victim before they can get up from their feet.

the ground surges beneath his feet, king's footing becoming unstable in the midst of a heavy-handed throw. eyes widen slightly as they narrow down on a projectile heading his way, aiming to knock the blue-eyed turn coat out early. he is, however, saved by the timely intervention of his lucario — the jackal's EXTREME SPEED lending him the needed advantage to catch, and subsequently return the ball to its sender.

fast and hard, the ball spins in the air making a beeline for KING WAYLAND . however, it seems this time his pokemon breach fealty to him — a lucario rushes forward and protects his trainer, allowing the ball to be sent back with just as much fierceness.

[break][break] of course, it isn't just king wayland's pokemon who vouch for him. jayden's too.

[break][break] his grimer takes the brunt of the blow, sticky fingers grasping the ball that enters his gooey hold. is it cheating to play a game like this when everything simply sticks to you?

[break][break] jayden pries the ball from his pokemon's chest, sticky residue and all, and scans the opponent's field for a willing victim. once again, he tosses.

[break][break] behind him, the rumble of his torterra's GRASS KNOT scatters over the craters in the ground the earthquake had uncovered, aiming to trip or entrap any pokemon who had the unfortunate task of getting caught in their path.

king roars in defiance of the grimer's obvious skirting of the rules. he's interrupted from his impending rageful rant as the ball is returned, though a quick duck saves him.

unfortunately, alpha company isn't so lucky. the ball weaves its way through the crowd and hits the brass dead on, knocking the fighting-type to the ground. in accordance with the rules, he's considered fainted, thus, king is forced to return them, grumbling. roaming to track jayden, he trips beneath the GRASS KNOT and lands on a shoulder. another roar of rage.

[break][break] as KING WAYLAND calls foul, the grimer lets out a sound of apology, though it can't be heard very well over the roar of the battle. gooey and sticky, it sinks into the ground, frowning.

[break][break] the dodge ball catches in the palms of the blaziken before it's sent crashing through the air back towards jayden's team. this time, the ball spirals - hot and deep - into the pokemon's gooey surface. the momentum is too much - the grimer is knocked back into the sand, eyes rolling back in it's head.

[break][break] jayden catches the dodgeball when it pops up, and chucks his arm back. the ball spirals as it spins through the air.

[break][break] meanwhile, purple liquid spills from jayden's side of the court to KING WAYLAND as his scolipede uses TOXIC.

[break][break] "stay back, " jayden orders, his voice sharp and broking no room for argument. as a group, they all shift. KING WAYLAND 's ball spins and lands flat on the ground, having lost it's momentum as it spins down the court.

[break][break] his haxorus makes a loud roar as it crashes through the sand. she headbutts the sphere with GIGA IMPACT, turning the dodgeball into a fiery pellet as it cascades through the air and into a waiting victim.

the beartic's rage becomes its own hinderance, as the GIGA IMPACTED ball comes crashing down on it like a meteor. in moments he's sprawled on the floor, and returned to the capsule.

a growl pushes out of king's throat, but he takes the (surprisingly) well-kept ball and tosses it in the air. behind him, the breloom steps up with a DYNAMIC PUNCH, sending it spinning like a curveball at the opposing team.

the sound of a caterwaul raises through the air as the ball crashes right into his haxorus, who is still recovering from the effects of her giga impact. pincers grip the ball in it's force, thus saving her from a knock-out, but light crackles acround her. pain surges through her body, numbed through the pain.

[break][break] confusion fogs her mind. where is she?

[break][break] a flick of the wrist and she is returned to her pokeball — there's no point in having the misguided on the court.

[break][break] fingers grab the ball in a white-knuckled grip. shadows flicker in and out around him, something like hurt twisting his heart.

[break][break] there's no point in having the misguided in life either.

[break][break] he throws the ball into the air, and his torterra uses WOOD HAMMER. a giant projection materializes into the air that swings like a pendulum, crashing into the object and sending it spiraling across the court. helena gives a roar of pain, as she's hit with the knockback, RECOILING in pain.

exploding stars and planets dance in the air as the METEOR MASH crashes into the rubber ball and sends it spiraling across the court. the energy around the room seems to stretch and twist, giving them a glimpse of a million galaxies before the momentum punches into the torterra and knocking herself back.

"brace yourself!"

[break][break] the dinosaur does her best, but the pain is too much. she lets out a caterwaul of a cry, before her knees buckle beneath her and she submits. her heavy body sinks into the shifting sand with a mighty THUMP.

[break][break] his phantump opens up a PHANTOM FORCE portal, the same moment that his metagross BULLET PUNCHES at least thirty different dodge balls into the open space. the shadowy gateway reopens just above KING WAYLAND 's zone, pelleting their opponents with an onslaught of new attacks.
