It takes one alteration in the conversation for Locke’s mood to visibly lift and for Sootopolis to be momentarily forgotten, dark clouds left behind, on the promise of wings taking them higher than they could touch.[break][break]

As their Lapras bob close to one another on calm waves, Angelo settles back down on Ariel’s shell, one knee propped up and his arm casually draped over it. His own expression a little more relaxed now, subtle lines now flat as he listens to Locke enthusiastically list plane memories. [break][break]

“Yeah, it’s an amphibian. A Cessna Turbo, 206… A little old but I like to think it’s got character that way.” [break][break]

Those modern, technologically heavy aircrafts were far too out of his price range anyway. Besides, those fancy models would just feel alien… The cracked leather seats of his Cessna and the reliable, older dials were far more Angelo’s comfort zone. [break][break]

“It’d probably look familiar to those you saw in Vermillion, I bet.” Fingers card through Skyla’s white fur when she props her head on his leg, ruby eyes heavy but ever-peeking towards the ocean, sensing the horizon for humidity and wind changes. “Where do you need to go after this? Once she's full I can take you wherever. Maybe take the long way around a mountain or two.” He grins, an offer for Locke that's just as appealing for himself. [break][break]

A young Rufflet flew down and perched on his Lapras for a quick respite, looking at Chatty-Chatty curiously. The Chatot mirrored the expression, still Singing along with the radio. The other bird delightedly warbled a few notes with its more musically-inclined partner, until it was slowly lulled to sleep atop Lal-La’s head. Locke quietly pressed an empty Pokéball against it before it could fall off.

“Dewford’s the last stop for the day, we were just takin’ it easy gettin’ there.” And their Pokémon seemed perfectly content with continuing to do so. Cumu-Cumu at least looked interested, though probably more in the chance to play around in the clouds for a bit than the plane itself.

Locke was positively giddy, however. They knew it couldn’t be much different from how they typically got around, but there was something fantastical about being in the air without the aid of a Pokémon, about knowing that there were and are other people like them, who weren’t satisfied spending their whole lives with two feet on the ground.

“One way ticket from Pacifidlog to Dewford it is.” And he wouldn’t even ask Locke to contribute towards the fuel expense. [break][break]

“As long as your Lapras doesn’t mind me taking over her transport duties?”[break][break]

After a quick glance at his old phone to check the time, Angelo dips his foot back in the water. Comfortable to do so while passing the time, despite the raw feelings he harboured for the leviathan deity that controlled its ebbs and flows. [break][break]

Such thoughts barely had the chance to resurface within his mind however, when Skyla rumbles beneath his hand, throat letting out a warning growl that sees her pristine fur fluff. “What’s up ‘la…?” Is all Angelo manages to get out, before something slimy decides it would like a taste of his big toe…[break][break]

“Fucking fucker!”[break][break]

Thankfully, his Absol has the foresight to wiggle out of the way before Angelo yanks his foot out of the sea with a startled jump that sees him laying sprawled on his back atop Ariel’s shell. A Gastrodon peeks, licking its ‘lips’, out of the waves… [break][break]

Whether he’s simply startled from having slime dribbled on his foot or just that it’s some poor act of revenge for his fright, the pilot throws a pokeball. [break][break]

“You didn’t see that, 'right…?”

“Eh, she’ll live. Between you and me, La-La doesn’t know when to take a break.” He said without any understanding of the word “irony”. The Lapras grumbled and rocked a little harder, playfully dumping the postman into the sea.

Locke resurfaced with a shocked and confused Drizzile Binding to their head. La-La gave it a curious sniff while it gave her a Tearful Look, ignoring her trainer’s attempts to clamor back onto her shell.

After a few tries they managed to at least pull their bag down into the water with them, fishing out a dripping-wet Pokéball to press against the stunned lizard. “So long as you didn’t see that.”

Both couriers, past and present, were disasters it seemed. [break][break]

While one sprawls on his back with a slimy foot and a fresh pokeball now occupied, the second goes for a spontaneous dip. Locke’s loud splash as they’re dunked into the water alerts the pilot to his friend’s plight, propping himself up on his elbow to catch sight of them remerging from the depths with a hitchhiker. [break][break]

Angelo’s voice instantly barks out in laughter over the disturbed waves. Jovial and carefree, perhaps the longest burst he’d had since the events of Sootopolis some days ago. [break][break]

“Sorry, bud. No deal. You couldn’t pay me to forget the look on your face.” He cracks an unrepentant grin, swiping at the corner of his eye with a thumb as poor Locke makes several attempts to scramble onto the back of his Lapras. “But hey, at least you made a new friend.”[break][break]

A good laugh had been sorely needed. [break][break]

“Speaking of breaks… I should probably head back to Pacifidlog soon.” Rummaging in his pocket, he fishes out another spare capsule, poised and ready to toss at a Hoot-Hoot that had fluttered down to try and take a rest atop Ariel’s head. “You wanna come with for that free flight or is the ocean calling you back into her embrace?”[break][break]

Mischief paints itself into the form of a smile.

Chatty-Chatty echoed Angelo’s laughter, and the water bubbled a bit as Locke sank below to the waves to hide their embarrassment. They instantly broke the surface again, however, when Angelo reiterated his previous offer. “Yes!” They answered quickly, face lit with genuine glee despite the chill of the water.

He made one last attempt at climbing La-La’s shell, this time the Lapras graciously dipping to one side to give her trainer a better foothold. He gave his Pokémon an appreciative pet on the neck once he was firmly back in place, and gave his friend a look that was equal parts eager and expectant.
