They headed back to the water and got kitted out for diving. Zac picked out a trio of matching green goggles and snorkels. "Who's up for a swim, ay?" he asked, wading into the water.

Zac and Greg clung to Lulu's back as the mammoth swam out into the fake ocean. Once they were deep enough, she took a huge, thundering breath dove eagerly down to the sandy bottom. The water was surprisingly warm!

Crackling sea ice encased her tusks, and she carved deep trenches in the floor as she searched for fake fossils.

The younger trainer looked like there were amassing a collection too. Fast, just like Bucatini and Cacio. “Well-!” Mint squeaked out, trying to remember if Glitch had explicitly stated anything about the fossils. But Glitch was a nice guy. He’d given him a pokemon plush or two once. “I mean…he didn’t say we couldn’t keep at least one?” Mint had said one to be polite. He didn’t know what happened to the fossils after they were dug up, but he has a feeling they were reburied for the sake of a new round of challengers. [break][break]

“Even if we can’t, I happen to be very persuasive otherwise~” Mint’s only weapon was a terrible case of the puppy eyes, but it was still effective. Cacio moved aside, surprise by the Ambipom but not outwardly hostile. Bucatini meanwhile stared down at the Meowstic, just as cautious towards her as she was towards them. While Mont is talking, the Aggron turned back to the wall, smacking it once more in the hopes of breaking through a thin enough layer of dirt to reveal another fossil. [break][break]

Their first piece: a wide, gaping maw. "There must be a hundred teeth in that mouth!" Zac said as they brought it to the surface. He wrapped the piece and put it safely in his bag, away from any attacking turtles. "Next one, ay? glitch maverick usually hides them close together."

This time Greg was eager to help. The little monkey paddled down, planted his stick in the mud and sand, and his Grassy Surge forced up a crop of tangling sea weed!

But there was one section free from the wriggling grass. There. Zac thought, pointing it out as he gave Lulu a slow slap on the flank. The mammoth swam down and used her Ancient Power to pull the strange section out of the sand.

She didn’t exactly find a loose brick, so much as she loosened enough bricks. And by loosened, it means she Double-Slapped the wall repeatedly until the bricks fell out. Sure enough, a piece was hidden behind one of the many newfound holes, though Pom had to climb a bit to find it.

And rather than place it in Hideo’s hand, she dropped it, shouting at Hideo’s Meowstic to catch it. Miles was distracted from his vigil long enough to Psychically catch it, lowering it down into Hideo’s hands before shouting a few Poke-swears at the Ambipom - who giggled as she went back into her slap-happy search of the walls.

Feeling the piece revealed it was shaped differently from the previous two he’d gotten. “Nice job, guys!” Hideo said, praising the efforts of both his Pokemon. Even if Pom was the one doing the majority of the work.

The Meowstic’s attention was quickly stolen by Zac Ramsay mentioning a swim - followed by his head furiously shaking from side to side. Luckily, Hideo was just as enthusiastic about getting in the water. “I think we’ll pass,” he shouted back, “I can’t really swim.” Which was mostly true; while he could tread water, he couldn’t do it for long, and going underwater was pretty much a death sentence for him - unless he could find out which way was up. Or someone found it for him.

As for mint frost ’s reveal, there was a slight tinge of disappointment in Hideo. Yet there was also hope. “Yeah, I guess if there’s a lot of fossils, we could keep some,” he said. “Though won’t hurt to ask first.” He didn’t know much about what kind of person Glitch was, but what little he’d seen of him at the Cycling Road didn’t seem bad. Maybe he would be willing to let them keep some fossils.

The unearthed chunk might have been a tail, or it might have been nothing at all. It was hard to tell with Glitch's fakes. Hell, they'd tricked him entirely the first time.

"Best keep it just in case," Zac said, and he put it in his bag beside the Head piece. "Lulu, up for some more digging?" he asked the massive creature. She roared, shaking her wet head and spraying fat, dirty droplets across the lake. "That's the spirit! Let's get back in there!" Zac laughed, and the trio dove back in.

The Ancient Power had done more than pull up the strange piece of tail. It had transformed the kelp bed. Huge juts of stone slashed up from the bottom like cliffs, and gaggles of boulders lay resting together like nests of some gigantic bird.

Now this is a biome, Zac thought, and the three split up, paddling among the rocks as they searched for any hints of unearthed fossil.

Bucatini unearthed a middle big, and Mint is turning his head to the side trying to figure out exactly what was going on. Was that a ribcage? And a spine? He shuddered, wondering how they hadn’t broken such delicate looking bones. Whatever the case they were set for the competition. “Yes! Got a set, one more to go!” he cheered, patting both his pokemon affectionately. [break][break]

His pokemon, are for the most part unimpressed at the thought of swimming, but Mint is too distracted to follow up, marveling at his luck with the wall. That was bound to run out soon though. Probably. He got what he came for, now it was just a matter of getting his doubles. Plus, it seemed like some people were a little slower than others to gather and if they were being timed…well he was sure the desperation would spark a bit of a trading frenzy. “Cacio, Bucatini, let’s keep clearing this wall and if we can’t get anything, move to sifting through the dirt on the ground.” He ordered, both pokemon now attacking the wall along with Hideo’s Ambipom. He gave a nod to Hideo, unaware he couldn’t actually see it. “Exactly! You miss 100% of all the shots you never take and all that~” Maybe not the best metaphor but it worked.

He quickly spotted another head. More teeth, more empty eye sockets. It wasn't what he needed, but he put it in his bag anyway. Two heads are better than one! Zac thought, picturing Big Habanero.

Zac paddled through the cracked and broken kelp beds, before a flash of waving green caught his attention. Greg was on top of one of the rocks, waving wildly for his attention. Did he find something?

Greg lead him between two boulders, to where a chunk of earth had been lifted like a paver, and Zac saw it. The pale glistening of fake bone. He ruffled the monkey's head, and the pair set about excavating the find.

Hideo’s Meowstic was distracted making sure none of the bricks fell on anyone - mainly himself and his trainer. But no amount of Pokeswears were stopping Pom, not when her search had gotten results yet again, though she dropped down this time to hand it over to her trainer.

Another long piece. It was easy to guess this was a tail, and that the piece he’d gotten before was also a tail. Guess he really was going to go for a pair of full fossils.

“Think we should check the wall again?” Hideo asked his team. “Or the ground?” Intentionally leaving out the lake. Pattern recognition be damned, he’d go through every head in the ground and tail in the wall until a midsection popped up.

His Ambipom was less picky, grabbing Hideo once again as she dragged him over to the one spot he didn’t want to go. She did have the decency to not pull him into the water, but she was going to be less merciful with the Meowstic.

She swiped Miles right off Hideo’s shoulder, lifting him over the lake. The Meowstic was not happy, once again spewing more Pokemon-unique profanity. She didn’t quite drop him into the lake - rather, she was having him take a look into the water for any pieces under the water. And if he found any, to pull them up.

“Don’t be mean to him, Pom,” Hideo sighed.

Mint found a head and managed to pull bone out of the wall by its eye socket, grinning excitedly. “This is going to be such a cool Halloween decoration!!” he said as pocketed the fossil with the rest of his hoard in a little messenger bag. As the kid next to him comes up empty, and the other guy that was sort of talking to them pulled out another heads, he wondered if he should try over by the water or maybe just…switch up the spots. “Ok, last one on this wall then we go dig a pit guys.” Mint said as he clapped his hands together free of dirt. Another piece of sharp, toothy rocky.

Zac wasn't disappointed though. On the contrary, if he was attacked by that turtle from last time he had plenty of extras.

As they pulled out the head piece, Zac saw something underneath. Could it be? This must be what the kids call a 'Fat Stack', he thought, pulling out the second fossil that had been hidden right underneath the first.

He checked it, making sure it wasn't a head piece. It had clear, defined rib lines. Hardy, thick vertebra, and a spine arch that went on for days. A fossil of this quality would give any paleontologist a professional boner.

Aaaand nothing. There was only so much the Meowstic could see from the shore, even with his enhanced night vision (hurray for feline genetics). And he made sure Pom knew that with more of his very colorful, thankfully-impossible-to-understand-by-humans language, including many demands to let him down - and to not be a smartmudbray and drop him straight into the water.

So Pom set out to fix that.

Carefully, she took Hideo and Miles around the lake, allowing the latter to survey the shore for any stray pieces. It wasn’t just an aimless walk, though; she was looking for something that they could walk on, so they could get a closer look into the water without having to go in.

Failing that, she did have another plan, though she was certain that Miles wouldn’t like it. Only thing stopping her from doing it already was that her trainer asked her to be merciful. So merciful she’d be.

For now.

To the untrained eye, Zac's newest find may appear to be a piece of tail. But he knew better.

What was the tail bone connected to? That's right, the body bone, and this body was 100% bone.

Big bones, little bones, bones that climb on rocks. Zac pulled out the extra long, super XL fossil, that was really two fossils fused into one. It hadn't just been a Fat Stack of fossils, but a veritable buffet of bones. A feast of fossils. Three right on top of one another?

What a crazy, random happenstance! But sometimes things just lined up like that. Greg was also there.

When the group turned up with nothing, Mint sighed. Their streak had to run out at some point. But it seemed like they were finding success by the water. Quickly, Mint jogged over, waving at the trainers already there before peering into the muddy waters. “Uhh…” he looked at his pokemon. Cacio glared at him, unwilling to enter the dirty pond. Bucatini on the other hand didn’t seem to mind and so began stomping through into the water. “Oh, Bucatini! I think you stepped on something!” Mint shouted moving over to see if they’d found something else. [break][break]

Aaaand something. The Meowstic was once again shouting/speaking/swearing, but this time because he’d actually spotted something in the depths. Pom stopped long enough to focus his Psychic energy on what he’d seen, pulling it out of the water. It floated all the way over to Hideo, placed neatly on the pile he was struggling to hold in his arms.

“Was that a body piece?” Hideo asked, unable to assess it from where it was.

“Pom.” No.

“Another head piece?”

“Pom.”

“A tail?”

“Am.” Yes. Dang it.

“We’re gonna make a Mega Ambipom by the end of this,” Hideo sighed as his Pokemon continued their search of the lake. “Maybe we’ll find your long-lost ancestor, Pom.”

That got a laugh out of his Ambipom.
