It had been a surprise to get assigned to help assist on this mission, but it hadn’t been unwelcome one. He liked the change of pace. As nice as routine patrols were around Lillycove, going out near Foretree City was a welcome distraction. Like a mini vacation. Paxton felt at home in the wilderness, finding a comfort he sometimes missed when holed up in his apartment in the coastal city. [break][break]

The assignment was simple, head out to some remote post to check on weather monitoring stations. Easy. Especially with Joule who could literally fly if he needed them to. He’d been given a map and a couple of spots to check on for the day, he just needed his partner. He wasn’t about to ditch them. Especially when judging by the route already set for them, it wouldn’t take longer than an hour, maybe two if they took it easy. Maybe he’d get lucky and they wouldn’t show. That’d be fun, right?

No, Paxton is not about to get lucky. In fact, depending on how he looks at it, he might consider himself very unlucky indeed.[break][break]

Though Luka always brings a positive and gung-ho attitude to her volunteer work, her actual capabilities often leave something to be desired. A positive outlook can only get one so far. As much as she touts a newfound adoration for the outdoors, survival instincts come slowly. One can hardly consider themselves an expert after a few hikes or a night or two spent sleeping in a tent.[break][break]

But that's not enough to stop her. Besides, this job should be relatively simple, and Fortree is beautiful. As Luka traipses into the treetop city her spirits are high, and her skirt even higher. Well prepared indeed— at least her shoes are sensible this time around.[break][break]

"Oh! Monsieur Paxton! Gosh, it's funny running into you here!" A sweet face, flushed slightly with exertion, swims into view as she approaches. Pearly whites flash in a smile that stretches freckled cheeks wide. At her feet trot a pair of foxes, who greet Paxton as well with a soft chorus of yips.[break][break]

"I wish I could stay and chat, but I'm actually waiting for someone..."

Paxton’s eyes grew wide as he heard the footsteps incoming and saw the flash of pink hair. No. And then the voice rang out and he force and awkward smile on his face. Not her. “Luka.” He said as the young woman came into full view. Surely, she wasn’t- No… “On a date, perhaps?” he asked going in for the kill from the get-go. Maybe it’d make her skedaddle faster if he tried to fluster her. That sounded mean but…he- as one would say, he didn’t have the spoons for this right now. [break][break]

OR well, he never had the spoons for people like Luka. Not that he hated her, and he didn’t want her to have that impression but… He thought about their star gazing outing and while intimate, he felt like he’d seen something he shouldn’t have. He’d put it out of his mind, assuming he’d never see the publicist again. Oh, how wrong he was. “I’m out here helping out with some Weather Institute things.” He explained politely.

Paxton's first instinct is a good one, but it doesn't pay off. Luka blushes and splutters out her denial but she doesn't flee that quickly. For he'd sunk himself by being truthful, and Luka connects the dots with a slow widening of verdant eyes.[break][break]

"Eh, really? Wait...are you helping with the Castform too? That's great!"[break][break]

Eager hands reach forwards and clasp at both of his. She squeezes them in delight, bouncing up and down on her heels.[break][break]

"Oh gosh, I was so nervous! I was like, oh nooooo, what if me and my partner don't get along? I'm so glad it's you!" she gushes with an obliviously blithe smile. "The two of us will be unstoppable together, I just know it. Come on, come on! Let's go!"

There it is. He chewed on the inside of his cheek to keep himself from smiling. He predicted she'd run but then...she seemed to realize something. Gods be damned... "Ah, yeah, checking on some...weather stations-" he cuts himself off as she grabbed his hands, not a lick of uncomfortable in the action. [break][break]

He almost felt bad she had been anxious over nothing. Almost. He can't exactly help her on that front, so he shouldn't feel bad. "Oh? They didn't tell me who my partner is, but I'm glad it's someone I know as well." he stayed polite. He doesn't want to be overtly mean. Luka is harmless. However...she is grating, and he had very few spoons left for today. He nodded along with her enthusiasm before pulling put his map again, having marked the spot in red pen. "We're close to our assignment at least." he explained to her. "How have you been, Luka?"
