it's heartwarming to see the local ad for delibird deliveries knowing who runs the privately-owned delivery service. Eva Morales's told him a little about locke as well, and it's only now that he finally has a chance to meet up with the now young man.

would locke even remember him?

he'll find out. for now, he waits in a lonely booth in a cafe, sipping away at his matcha tea latte.

A month ago Locke probably wouldn’t have recognized the face in the window.

In his defense, a lot had happened the night they’d encountered each other (not including all of the far worse things he’d later learned had been occurring outside of his own little nightmare), and keeping tabs on one guy out of the hundreds of people trying to get out of Vermilion back then hadn’t exactly been a priority. Reliving it in Mossdeep had certainly jogged his memory though, and looking at him now, Locke wasn’t sure he could ever forget MATIAS SILPH .

Nervous energy skittered up and down his spine like bugs, making every fiber of his being scream to turn around and find some busywork to get lost in for a few hours. Or just, like, a blank wall to stare at until all his thoughts settled into pudding. But De-De was already tugging impatiently at Locke’s pant leg, enraptured by the sweet smell of pastries coming from inside, and he never could say no to her.

The bell above the door jingled as they finally entered and approached the booth.

“Um, hello,” Locke said to the man who pulled them from a warzone only to drop them on a boat with a one-way ticket to four years of isolation in a foreign country. “Are you Doctor Morales’ friend…?”

They took Matias’ hand, putting on their best “adult mask” as they introduced themselves. “Locke Jamison-or, well, I guess you knew that.”

De-De pulled at him again as he sat down, pointing at the glass case which held the objects of her gluttonous desire. The smell of baked apples and pumpkin spice wafted over from the counter, easing Locke’s nerves with the warm, autumnal aroma.

“Right, right, go pick something out.” He sighed, giving the barista an apologetic smile as he let the Delibird loose.

"i do. it's really good to see you again, locke."

really good, considering the last time they met, they were in the middle of a war.

a blissey pokes her head around the counter right as the delibird approaches. she offers it a small wave before gesturing to the baked goods.

"blissey, you don't work here."

but that doesn't stop her from trying to help the delibird.

chuckling, matias looks back over to locke.

"how've you been?"

Exhausted. Homeless. Scarred and terrified by the increasing number of near-death situations he finds himself in lately.

“Alright, I guess.”

De-De eagerly chirped up at the Blissey, happy to meet a fellow confectionary connoisseur. She tapped at a pie sitting behind the glass, something chocolate and covered in chopped apricorns, and Locke held up a finger for one slice. Cheaper to share.

“And you?” Locke asked, because it’s polite. Then added, because they were curious, “How do you and Dr. Morales know each other anyway?”

alright.

it's such a simple response that could carry so much weight. he doesn't bother looking for more, however, as matias settles with the response as is.

and when the same is asked of him, he smiles, offering the same.

"alright as well."

even though locke holds up one finger, blissey reaches for two, and it's with a sense of glee that she bounces over to the table, placing the pies down in front of them.

"oh. we met in kanto during the war, and we're currently seeing each other."

blissey gestures to one of the pies but matias shakes his head, passing.

"you're welcome over for dinner sometime, if you want."

Oh yeah. Kanto made sense.

Locke hummed thoughtfully through a spoonful of pie. Two war vets getting together sounded like a lot of baggage in one place, but they supposed there had to be some comfort in being with someone who had the same problems as you. So distracted were they by this train of thought, that when Matias made his offer they nearly choked on their next bite.

Beyond the mortifying ordeal of third-wheeling at the table of war hero they only barely knew as an actual person and not just someone on a pedestal, there was something…terrifying about being a guest under someone else’s roof for the first time in years.

Thankfully he didn’t have to stammer out a hasty refusal, as De-De chose that exact moment to barrel into his lap with her own slice, now tripling his intended bill. He took the moment of recovery for the blunt force blow to his stomach and wallet to pull together a more polite answer. “I’ll…think about it?”

There was brief silence after his response, unsure of how to really continue the conversation, before Locke gave up on it entirely. ”Was there some reason you wanted to see me all of a sudden?”

blissey stands next to matias and places her pie on the table, just tall enough to eat comfortably off it. once again, she extends a piece over to matias who declines.

"not really. i mean, i saw you briefly at the soiree when everything was going to shit, and i guess i just wanted to check in on you."

back at the soiree when Eva Morales saved them.

"rocket's here as well, but i'm sure you don't need me to tell you that."

“Nope. Right here in Hoenn,” he said, tapping his fork against his plate.

“Some mess over outside Fallarbor back in, uh, April I think?” Their brow furrowed a bit, trying to recall the exact sequence of events. “Some weird tree attracting all the Spinda, and Rocket turning up to claim it. Just my luck getting caught up in it. I got kinda roughed up, but Dr. Morales helped me out, and even visited me in the hospital after.”

he chuckles, gaze shifting to watch blissey devour her pie.

"when i got seriously hurt in kanto, she visited me in the hospital after as well. made sure i was okay when no one else would."

the memory, no matter how painful, is also fond, and warm in a way he can't quite describe. it brings with it a smile.

"i guess what i'm trying to say, and why i wanted to meet, is to let you know she cares about you. and i do, too."

Locke froze, unable to respond. His mouth felt dry, and when he opened it no sound came out. It was a lot to dump on a guy before he’d even touched his pie.

Hoping to avoid answering, Locke turned away to finally eat. But the dessert, which he’d absentmindedly poked and prodded at throughout the conversation, was reduced to little more than gooey, nutty mess on his plate.

De-De, who had finished hers in record time, noticed her trainer’s plate just as she was getting ready to start her second. The Delibird puffed out her cheeks in a sympathetic pout, before insistently shoving her slice in front of Locke. Then, without giving them a chance to protest, she took the remains of the other one and shoveled it into her beak like a living garbage can.

“…Thanks,” Locke mumbled, though it was unclear if he was for their Pokémon or Matias.
