It’s the WILL-O-WISP of dozens upon dozens of ghosts that illuminate the darkened woods of Mt. Pyre as they begin their descent; fire flickering ominously in the air as twilight paints the skies in dark blues and reds.

Mars had not planned on having a companion during this particular trip to the eerie mountain, but after his initial encounter with Izydor Baranowski, they had somehow ended up in each other’s path until it clearly became time to leave.

It’s always better to have company when at places like these, isn’t it?

While Mars may care little for the presence of ghosts, there’s something much different that bothers him on this Autumnal eve:

The way down the mountain was easier than the trek up it, for the most part. Nobody liked walking uphill, after all, and while Izzy wasn't unfit... sometimes he sure did feel it. It was especially embarrassing when walking with another - which Izzy preferred not to do, but it seemed him and Martín del Mar were predestined to hang out for a few minutes more.[break][break]

He looked around. That tree did look familiar. "Yeah?... or... wait, did we?" - didn't all trees look the same, after all? Or did they...? This one's leaves had fell to the ground not so long ago, still fresh-autumn gold and russet, collected in small piles while it's branches stretched out above.[break][break]

Izzy moved over, hands still in his pockets, to half-heartedly kick at the pile and look closer at the tree. No, Mars was right - they had walked past this one before, thick and gnarled down at the root.[break][break]

"Guess we got distracted or something". Another leaf fell, landing neatly on the top of the pile.

Is a mountain where the spirits of pokémon rest a dangerous place?

Perhaps, but not more dangerous than any other place.

While some others would perhaps be raising prayers for their lives to all gods up above when seeing the oddities that surround them, Mars simply watches calmly – eyes of bright amber falling upon trees, the path, and every single detail around them.

It’s how he notices that slight yet so terribly familiar pink tint, and at the sight of it, he frowns just so slightly.
[break][break]
Is something playing mind tricks with them?
[break][break]
Is it a Psychic type? Is it a ghost? Is it a fairy?
[break][break]
All options are somewhat likely, considering where they stand.
[break][break]
”I think something is changing what we see, we can’t rely on it to get out of here.” At least if his hunch is right and they’re indeed caught up in an all too familiar PSYCHIC TERRAIN, that is. Or, is it perhaps a MISTY one?

Before giving any more suggestions, Mars turns to look at his companion.

Changing what they see... ugh. Great. As if today needed to go on any longer. Izzy turned to look as Mars as he spoke, only then realising a bare tree behind the CEO, with a neat pile of leaves at it's base... stretched out branches... thick and gnarled roots... Izzy turned behind to the pile he'd just kicked, only to find it gone. "Huh".[break][break]

Fine, if ghosts and ghoulies wanted to have their fun, whatever, they could feel free - but Izzy had home to get to, and some poor sap's crappy motorbike waiting in the garage back there to try and tune up. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing pale lines on his upper arm, where he too-often wore short sleeves and never caught the sun there. Farmer's tan some might have called it - dirty mechanic forced to work in the bullshit heat's tan would be Izzy's preferred name.[break][break]

"Obviously, we just gotta keep walking in one direction. Even if it looks like we're going in circles, so long as we keep going the same way, we'll end up out, right?"

Of course, Mars could easily do whatever he wants, and he often is one to do as much. But, years of running a successful business have taught him that even feedback from underlings and those lesser than him can be valuable sometimes, and even though his opinion of Izydor Baranowski is yet to be completely formed, that also applies in this instance.

If only Mars knew how right he is about the underling part. Soon he will, but probably not before they leave Mt. Pyre.

”Hmm…” It’s for only a couple of seconds that he considers the other’s words, gaze then once again falling on him. ”But what if it also affects our sense of direction?”

Now: What pokémon of Mars’ wouldn’t be negatively affected by either possible terrain move and could take them safely down the mountain?

The answer seems obvious.

With a slight yet ever-confident smirk, the banker reaches for a Luxury Ball, from it releasing a majestic Rapidash of the Galarian variant.

”How good are you at horse riding?” This time, the question comes with a raised eyebrow.

"Oh, then... we..." Hm. That was a good point - in which case, they were trapped unless either of them had something that could deal with fucky terrain. Izzy had Sen tucked in his Pokeball , but the little ghost was tired from the excursion on Pyre proper. If only one of them had thought to bring something like...[break][break]

He paused, as the light from the opening Luxury Ball hit his gaze.[break][break]

...yeah, like that. That would do nicely.[break][break]

"Horse riding? Eh..." What answer could he give except no? Izzy was a city boy through-and-through, and always had be - there weren't exactly wild herds of Rapidash and Mudsdale galloping around Castelia and Slateport, after all. Horse riding was always something for the kids who had money - the pretty girls with their expensive riding gear and well-trained Pokemon. No good for an alley-rat and his little biting lizard.[break]
"I don't have... much experience with it."

Is horse riding something for the kids who have money?

Not like Mars could deny it, if considering the fact that his family breeds horse pokémon for the sake of racing.

This Rapidash happens to be one of them, of course, and its fine pedigree is probably obvious to anyone even if they know little to nothing about horses. The pokémon is tall, imposing, glorious even, and it’s with an intense azure gaze that it stares down at the mechanic just as Mars climbs up onto its back with ease.
[break][break]
”Well… You better hold on tight, then.” There’s a certain hint of playful wickedness about the way he smirks, offering a hand to his new acquaintance and pulling him up onto the Rapidash with just as much ease.
[break][break]
”Alright, Arion, take us down the mountain.”
[break][break]
Just like that, with a neigh that almost seems to express approval, the Rapidash takes off – swiftly avoiding obstacles in its path as it runs onwards.
[break][break]

[break]
It’s fast.
[break][break]
And, around them, the trees shift and change and grow stranger and stranger, but the Rapidash doesn’t seem to mind – its very horn and mane glowing as if it were acting to counter the effects of the terrain.

The way that Martín del Mar practically lifts him up to the back of the steed brings colour to Izzy's cheeks, which he immediately hates and looks down, as if to disguise it in the half-pink hue of the forest around them.[break][break]

He says hold on, but Izzy wasn't quite prepared for the speed with which the unicorn Pokemon would take off, taking a moment to yelp and then blush harder at the embarrassing sound. The horse leapt and galloped with such specific movements, as though it knew exactly where to step, what trees were real, what trees were illusions, and - most importantly - how to get home.[break][break]

The world flew by them in various colours as it tried to keep up with the Rapidash's countering glow - the leaves around fading from pink-tinged to golden brown to the greenest of spring greens at every leap; it felt like being pushed through a different world every second, jumping each strain of the multiverse as it changed around them.[break][break]

"Is this... does it... you're sure we're going the right way?!" It was difficult just to get words out with all this sensory overload. Izzy's head buzzed as the trees, some as tall as skyscrapers and others tiny like fairy-huts, swept past them in droves.

As tales told, Arion had once been the name of a divine horse; heavenly, immortal, and fabulously fast. This is not such a horse, but the reasons why Mars named the Galarian Rapidash after it would be obvious to anyone who has heard the story before.

Beautiful and swift, it’s with grace that the Unique Horn Pokémon gallops, speeding up just as Izydor’s question comes – as if it were offended that he even dared ask.

Mars, on the other hand, laughs, clearly enjoying the ride.
[break][break]
”Yeah, relax. Arion’s got this. Right, Arion?” He pats the pokémon’s side and it neighs in response, its horn glowing as if a beacon...
[break][break]
A beacon that cuts through a fallen tree with a powerful PSYCHO CUT, the Rapidash not even slowing down.
[break][break]
Soon, pink hues no longer surround them, and the bottom of the mountain becomes visible past the trees ahead.

”See?”
