instead of reiner, she finds the next best thing in matias. he scoops her up into his arms, lifting her up before carrying her towards the house. charizard stays outside, keeping watch (enjoying the sun, really).

the glass door slides open, and in he steps.

"this is it."

a two-story house with large windows that give them a crystal clear view of the beach. the living room's the first room they step in, and beyond it is the kitchen and the hallway that leads further into the house.

It's a rather simple place, a far cry from the house hidden in the flower fields or tucked away from the prying eyes of society. Yet it gives her a sense of deja vu - Perhaps, this is what Razz Kingsman's house would look like if he'd think to spruce it up a little.

he's never found meaning behind that word before. during the war, kanto had been his home, never a city, never a town, just kanto. but here, in hoenn, he's found a home in Eva Morales. this is the life they've built, and this is the life he'll continue fighting for.

slowly, he takes her through their house, passing by every room, stopping briefly in each one of them.

eventually, they arrive at a particular room upstairs.

"and this is your room."

he pushes the door open, revealing an empty room, void of any furniture.

"or at least it will be. we thought you could choose whatever you wanted to do with it."

The soft thud of her bag hitting the ground accompanies rather tired steps. The house seems empty for a moment as she shuffles through. A quick glance out the large windows catches a glimpse of Ash out on the sand, basking in the sun. That meant Matias was home.

“You won’t believe the crap Mew tried to pull today, it nearly set the lab on fire when it-“ she turns to glance up the stairs and she’s caught off guard, jaw hung slightly agape.

Her head tilts slightly like a curious Poochyena, “Hi,” her gaze falls on the child, a smile creeping across her face. It’s genuine, it always is when she see Eris, “Eris,” there’s a slight inflexion in the tone, a question, “To what do we owe this pleasure?” Her gaze fixes back on Matias, a silent communication, Is everything ok?

It doesn't focus on the fact that Matias could time when Eva got home, nor the words that she speaks about Mew or a fire in the labs. All it does is gnaw at her nerves, tugging at her heart when she tries to speak.

with no prior time to prepare eva, he's left with the only option but to improvise. he understands the look she gives him and nods.

"i, uh, was on an assignment with doug to handle a protest. we found her there, so i took her with me."

that might be oversimplifying things but it's what he settles on. he sways gently, as if it'd be enough to coax the tears away from eris.

"reiner ran away before i could get him, but i'm going to go look for him tomorrow."

offering eva a smile, he continues.

"until then, i was just showing eris our home."

The way she sniffles and the hesitation in her voice combined with the glisten of building tears absolutely breaks her heart. A maternal instinct rushes in, driving her legs forward and up the stairs, closing the gap between all of them.

”Eris,” her voice is soft, comforting. She reaches out to wrap an arm around them both. At first, her mind wanders to something darker than Reiner just running away. gone can mean a lot of things.

Eva nods in understanding as Matias explains, “Oh, eris, I’m sure you miss him terribly. We’ll find him, I’ll help too,” she lifts a hand to gently wipe a tear away from her soft cheek, “But first we should get you cleaned up and fed . . you must be absolutely exhausted! Can’t track down Reiner if you’re too tired to do it.”

Exhausted? She's probably beyond that. The cold she'd gotten from getting caught in the rain a while back hadn't settled, neither had the dull pain from her time spent at the Evergrande church. Running from the hospital before she was cleared to go probably did nothing to help her situation either. But she's toughed much worse than this, finds it hard to say anything that pertains to her discomfort. All she can do is nod, giving a weak sound as she tries to dry her tears.

If her heart wasn’t broken before, it shatters when Eris flinches away from her touch. Eva pulls her hand back, timid, but doesn’t look much into it. Eris has been through a lot today: she lost her best friend. After she’s lost so much in her life, she can’t imagine what it’s like for the child to lose the final piece of her heart.

Her arms open, accepting Eris should she want to be carried any longer. If not, Eva would let her stand, holding her hand for comfort, “Hmmm, I don’t know, what do you think, Eris? Perhaps some . . . grilled cheese and soup?” hearty, heartwarming, easy.

By the time Matias tries to hand her over, she's restrained her emotions, shoving her swirling emotions into a small box and leaving nothing but a void behind. It's always easier this way, not trying to feel or linger on things that upset her; Far easier than having to face reality on her own.

She doesn't really know how to convey that she doesn't feel like eating - And it's highly likely that the duo would try to get her to eat something anyways. So she just agrees with what they suggest, nodding as she clings to Eva.

What should she do here? Should she try to make an escape when they're not looking? If she runs, where should she go? Back to Rocket? Would they even think of her as their own anymore? Was Chu-e Choi still looking for her? Or would he have wanted her to leave while she could?
