Izzy couldn't have, in any way, shape or form, called himself a gardener. Both his current apartment and the apartment he grew up in in Unova didn't even have a garden, and the closest thing he got to horticulture was if an Unfezant dropped some seeds it was carrying onto his windowsill by accident.[break][break]

The girl he'd hiked up Mt. Pyre with - Luka, she'd said her name was - was pretty much the opposite of everything he was. She seemed sweet and nice, pretty, and also just, like... a normal person. Seeing someone like her win a prize at the costume contest made sense, but someone like Izzy? With his little demon creature he called a Salandit? It didn't make sense![break][break]

"...What kinda reward is carrots, anyway...?"

"I think so! At least, that's what I've been doing."[break][break]

A few neat mounds of dirt mark the spots where Luka has already planted a few of her carrots. It's too early for them to sprout, but she likes to imagine the little seeds slumbering under the earth, waiting to give birth to new life. It seems oddly appropriate, in a place like this; the cycle of death and rebirth, fertile soil yielding to create something new.[break][break]

It gives her hope, she supposes.[break][break] There is hope, therefore I live.[break][break]

"It is kind of an odd prize though, isn't it? I wonder why we have to plant them here, of all places." Luka shrugs and tosses a braid over her shoulder as she kneels by her makeshift garden plot— for such a dainty thing, she doesn't seem to mind a bit of dirt.

"I really liked your Salandit's costume, by the way," she says as she pulls on a pair of gardening gloves. "It was so cool! It's no wonder that you won."

Izzy parted the soil with just his hands, unafraid of dirtying the undersides of his fingernails. Supposedly volcanic soil was great for growing plants - did that mean that Mt. Pyre was once a volcano like Mt. Chimney? He still wasn't sure why the seeds needed to specifically be planted here as opposed to elsewhere, but maybe ghosts loved vegetables?[break][break]

"I was just thinking that" He looked across at her for a moment, watching her kneel in the dirt like it was nothing. She didn't seem the type, but... he supposed making judgements like that was always stupid. Plenty of people assumed wrongly about him, after all. When she complimented his costume, he brushed it off as easily as crumbs.[break][break]

"Eh- it wasn't really anything special, yours was miles better. It's from that, uh, that tv show or something, right? It looked really good. Did you make it?"[break][break]

There's a pause for a moment.[break][break]

"Did you ever see that video, uh-- the one with that Growlithe? And they dress him up like an Ariados, and he freaks that guy out in the parking lot at night, and... it went, like, viral or whatever." He cleared his throat, awkwardly trying to explain how actually proud he was of the costume he'd put together, no matter how much he pretended he wasn't. "It was kind of based on that. My costume, I mean"

"Oh gosh...thank you! Besides...I wouldn't say either of our costumes was better than the other! They were so different, after all. And, um, it's really Bonbon who should get all the credit anyways. She's the one that pulled it off so well!" Her Lopunny really had been perfect for the role. And even though Luka had been happy to cosplay Sailor Moon to suit the mood, it really was her dear companion who had stood out the most.[break][break]

"I um...I did buy it, but it was child's costume, you know? So we had to alter some things and make a few new pieces...it was fun! And I think..." Lips purse as she tries to recollect. "Mmm, that does sound familiar! Either way, you definitely pulled it off. If I'd seen him coming at me at night, I'd definitely be freaked out!"[break][break]

Anise hovers over her shoulder as Luka picks up her trowel and begins to dig, starting to create another raised bed to plant a new row of carrots. Her Steenee has been a great help so far; helping to choose the best spots to plant, the correct way to place carrots so they grow well and without impediment. The loose soil is perfect for carrots, apparently, but Luka still breaks up chunks of loam or any loose rocks she finds as she digs.[break][break]

She glances over at her companion again, noting the skin on his hands turning from fleshy pink to brown dirt. A giggle breezes past her lips, quickly lost to the autumn air. "I have a few more tools in my bag, you know," she offers. "You can borrow some, if you'd like!"

"Yeah."[break][break]

A man of few words, no matter how social he tried to be. Izzy didn't want to seem like he didn't care about what Luka had to say though - she was genuinely nice to speak to, considering Izzy hated conversation and socialisation as a whole - so he forced out a couple more sentences.[break][break]

"That's cool, though - I mean, that you could like... alter it and stuff. If I had to do any of that I'd be lost. I can sew on patches and stuff, though." Had to learn to, considering how little clothes he could afford as a kid.[break][break]

He watches her for a second then, leant back on his arms, working in tandem with her Steenee. People who could work like that with their pokémon always amazed him - maybe it was his own mental blocks, or maybe he just wasn't that good a trainer, but he always felt like he was more annoying to his pokémon than anything else. When Wira watered plants, or Myszko snuck off to steal things, he generally just let them be. Maybe he just needed to... try a little harder? It was mesmerising to watch, really.[break][break]

She looked over soon enough, though, and Izzy found his cheeks redden, caught in the act.[break][break]

"Oh- that's... you don't have to do that if they're fancy or anything, I don't wanna break your stuff by accident - I'm not exactly experienced in this kinda thing" but her smile is so genuine, her laugh so carefree, he can't help but believe she really does mean it - no strings attached.[break][break]

"...Yeah, alright, please. If you're sure?"

What makes a good trainer, anyways? If it comes down to strength and power, then Luka makes for a very poor one indeed. But companionship and felicitous union— that's something she's good at. Luka's always treated her Pokémon like friends more than tools, and most of them respond in kind.[break][break]

Most.[break][break]

Luka glances up above the dirt, to a tall avian form standing in the middle distance. Her Blaziken lingers around the holy grounds in what seems to be contemplation, but he's likely still just simmering in his own quiet rage. Though their frequent trips to Mt. Pyre of late seem to calm him somewhat, anger still coils around his heart. It warps and twists, tangled around his ribs like wet clothes in a dryer.[break][break]

It breaks her heart to see. Luka can still remember when Helios was fond of her, when he'd let her sit on his knee as a child and preen his feathers, or hold her hand to ensure she safely crossed the street. She wants to hope that somewhere his affection for her still lingers, closed off like the rest of his emotions, but it's probably a selfish thought.[break][break]

She shakes her head and looks back to Izzy, wearing that same carefree smile. The intricacies of her own personal drama don't need to concern him.[break][break]

"Of course I'm sure! I'm glad you agreed, or I'd have to start insisting." She grabs her bag and hands it over. "Take anything you need! I think I've got an extra trowel, but we'll have to share a watering can. And if you need any help, Anise is full of good ideas!" Her Steenee nods and puffs her chest. On twig-like legs she totters over to Izzy's garden plot, peering into the dirt with a thoughtful expression. Then she chooses a spot and points, indicating that he should start to dig.

As he's already looking at her, it's hard to not follow her gaze when she drifts off for a few seconds. The Blaziken - he doesn't stare long. It doesn't feel right. Izzy knows himself how much a look can mean, how much a thought can eat away at you. Whether he's overthinking or whether Luka really is dealing with something, it didn't matter much either way - Izzy didn't want to pry.[break][break]

She smiles at him, then, as she brings herself back. For a split second, he almost smiles back, caught up in the moment of being with someone kind. It feels so rusty, though, that it's just the twitchy corner of his lips that turn upwards by a millimetre, barely noticeable. She was letting him borrow her stuff. Even the Steenee stomps over like teaching Izzy to garden was her life goal.[break][break]

"...Thanks. I don't mind sharing."[break][break]

He leafs through the bag for a moment, taking out a trowel and becoming painfully aware of the dirt under his fingernails. Following her pokémon's guidance, he pulls out another seed and holds it safe in his left palm, while digging where instructed with the trowel in his right.[break][break]

"Anise like the herb?" He asks a few minutes later, after creating a little hole and dropping the seed in. It always intrigued him the way people named their pokémon, but it wasn't too surprising that Luka's might be named after pretty, delicate things.

She catches it very briefly, that flickering hint of a smile at the corner of Izzy's mouth. Luka doesn't say anything about it, but files the expression away for later. The woman has a simple, solitary purpose in life: to make others happy. If she can bring a full grin to her companion's face, she'll consider that a success.[break][break]

But for now she lets Anise do the work. Her Steenee keeps Izzy under a watchful eye, chirping and directing him to remove a few stones and other obstructions that might impede the carrot's growth. In fact, she's a bit bossy, but it's hard to be mad at such a cheerful looking plant.[break][break]

Luka can't help but giggle as she watches them, but hides it behind her hand."Mhm! I, um...I tend to name my Pokemon after sweets," she says with a sheepish laugh. Her naming convention is childish, but it's one she's held ever since she was a girl. "Anise might be a stretch, but it kind of tastes like licorice, so..."[break][break]

She shrugs and digs her trowel back into the earth to make another carrot mound. "What about you? Do you nickname your Pokemon?"

Izzy wasn't sure if he'd grinned - wildly, fully grinned - since he was a very young child, entertained by simple things like colours and lights. He'd learned to shut away that excitement at a very early age to avoid disappointment, and it was a bad habit that had persisted so hard into adulthood that it seeped into his blood. With someone like Luka, though, to whom a smile looked so natural on, Izzy subconsciously wished he'd had more practice with it himself.[break][break]

He works under the watchful gaze of her Anise, following her as dutifully as he'd follow any admin or underboss. She drives him just about as hard as one, after all - it'd almost be cute if she wasn't taking it so seriously.[break][break]

Luka naming her pokémon after sweets was perhaps the least surprising thing in the universe, but it certainly was very adorable.[break]
"That's cute" He says - plenty of people's naming schemes for their pokémon stemmed from being a child, like naming stuffed animals. Cutesy names had never bothered him much - Bunny, Fluffy, Rose, Daisy, Cuddles. As he plants another seed and diligently buries it, he looks up to look at Luka for a moment.[break][break]

"Me? Ah--" It makes him think back to first receiving Myszko, the little terror that he'd never admit he loves dearly. "So... yeah, uh, I do. My family speak a specific little dialect at home so... I learnt that before I learnt speaking like everyone else does, and named all my pokémon in that. So it's kind of..." He thinks for a moment. "...personal, I guess. My Salandit's name means little mouse. Because he's always, uh, chewing on stuff."[break][break]

"A lot of them are named after herbs and spices and stuff, though. I always loved all the spices you could see in shops, and we had pretty simple meals, so, I guess..." He pauses and looks back down at the soil - doesn't want to bother Luka with rambling about his life.[break][break]

"...You do a lot of gardening, then? Since you've got all the tools n'stuff"

Pleased with his progress, Anise grants Izzy a pat on the head and a warbled coo of approval. It sounds like the whistle of wind through grass. Luka giggles as she observes the scene, torn between watching the two of them and planting her own carrots. As a result she nearly tips her remaining seeds into one furrow, but a stern look from Anise catches her just in time.[break][break]

She finishes the planting and dusts off her hands, leaning back on her heels while Izzy speaks. It's a mundane conversation, but her eyes sparkle at the mention of different languages and local dialects. This is her specialty, her true passion, and she drinks in every word with rapt attention.[break][break]

"I could tell," she says excitedly, her eyes wide and hands clasped together with delight. "I mean, don't get me wrong! You speak perfectly. There's just always...there's usually small tells, if you know what I mean? Little bits of an accent that slip through. Though it's not one I know as well as some others..."[break][break]

Her trowel lies abandoned in the dirt, gardening forgotten in favor of gushing over language like this. "Little mouse, erm...souris? No, no. мышь? Ah, maybe not...oh, wait! It's personal, r-right! Sorry, I didn't mean to pry." She flushes and turns back towards her carrots.[break][break]

"When I was little, my family moved around a lot. Learning the local languages, studying how people speak...it lets me still feel connected to those places even after we left. And then, um, I got a little obsessed with it..." Nervous laughter bubbles from her lips and she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. "Ah, sorry! You asked about...gardening? To be honest, I've never tried growing anything more than a windowbox before now..."

He receives a pat on the head and leans back on his hands, looking over his - and Anise's - work. Not too shabby, if he did say so himself. He raised a hand and gently patted the Steenee back. Interaction with pokémon was something that Izzy didn't have as early as some of his peers, but it was always pretty steadfast - they were generally much easier to deal with than people were, after all.[break][break]

I could tell, his gardening partner blurts out, far more excited about language than Izzy was used to people being. He had an accent you could pick up on, sure, but most people never mentioned it, and if they did, they never really took an interest. Luka buzzed at the opportunity, though, spilling out words about small tells, little mice and moving around.[break][break]

"Yeah, no... uh, no worries" - He wasn't the best at having conversations with more than one sentence involved at a time, but he tried, for Luka's sake. She seemed so confident but so nervous all at once, Izzy couldn't help but feel more at ease than he would usually. "Uh- it's Myszko. Don't worry about it, though. I... y'know, wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't want to"[break][break]

Now it's her turn to go pink - cheeks as rosy as the hair on her head. Izzy looks away, as if granting her space. "That makes sense. I only ever lived in one place. Like, as a kid, I mean... in Castelia city. It was a real shithole." Said so bluntly, with a complete lack of care - why stutter and stammer when he absolutely meant it, after all? It was no home to him. "Must've been nice to travel"[break][break]

Watching her Steenee watch the tiny mounds where he'd planted his carrots, he speaks up again. "Me neither. Guess we both, like... learnt... stuff. Here. Today. Y'know?" Right back to awkwardness.[break][break]

"Myszko," she repeats, sounding out each syllable as though tasting it. Once heard, always remembered is how it goes with languages and her. "Myszko! Bardzo słodkie."[break][break]

She could carry on an entire conversation, but instead allows Izzy to continue. And there, their easy chatter hits a roadblock. [break][break]"Oh." He says it so casually, but she freezes nonetheless. An air of awkwardness hangs around them as Luka flounders for something to say— but all that comes up is pity, and she doubts it'll be much appreciated. A sympathetic smile and silence seem the better option until conversation moves jerkily along.[break][break]

"Y-yeah! Um...you learn something new every day, right? Speaking of which..." Her fingers fumble in her lap, lacing over and across and around as though knitting. "Would you, maybe...d-do you mind if we trade numbers? S-so we can come back and check on the carrots and, um..."[break][break]

To hear his home tongue spoken back to him is a weird sound, and a strange memory. It remains as the language Izzy thinks to himself in when at home alone, and the gift of name he gives to his pokémon, but the only other people who've ever spoken it to him were his family, and so it comes with a certain bitterness.[break][break]

Nonetheless, she seems excited at being able to converse, and he nods politely in response. "...Dziękuję."[break][break]

The awkward feeling at his bluntness doesn't go unnoticed, and it stabs a little pang of panic into him - he hated conversations for this very reason, that he would always say something wrong and turn people off. But she kept going, which he appreciated. Through her stumbles and stutters, she asks for his number.[break][break]

Izzy flushes a matching pink almost immediately. Was she asking for his number, as in, like, actually asking for his number? He barely had the confidence to remind himself that he was gay, and worried he might explode into flames if he had to tell someone else as much. Luka seemed nice and all, but...[break][break]

"R-right, the carrots, but..." He starts, but trails off long enough for her to mention, uh... imperatives. In his mind he can't help but think, the fuck is an imperative?. But in relief that she wasn't asking him out - at least, not yet - he nods immediately and eagerly, standing and brushing a little dirt from his knees as he awkwardly holds out a hand to help Luka in doing the same.[break][break]

"Yeah, we can do that, sure. I'm not like... I don't really, like, I'm not a super smart kinda guy or anything. But I can speak it. So... if that's useful."[break][break]

Maybe it would be nice to build more happy memories with his native language.

"Oh, yay!" Any former awkwardness is smoothed over by palpable excitement and bright, shining eyes. "It's okay, it's okay! I'm not smart at all either," Luka says with a twittering laugh. "I'm just, um...k-kind of a nerd about this kind of thing, I guess? And like, you can read as many dictionaries as you want, but nothing helps with getting the accent down better than talking with someone who, well...w-who actually knows what they're talking about!"[break][break]

She beams at him as she takes the offered hand, and copies him in brushing off her knees and a bit of dirt that clings to her skirt. "Oh! But, um...I-I think you're lovely too, Monsieur," she assures. "That is, erm...I don't want you to think I'm just, like...using you for language practice, or anything like that. I'd like to get to know you better too! The offer of friendship is on the table, but is that too forward to ask for? Luka bites her lip, unsure.[break][break]

A beat of silence passes, but she fills it again to prevent any awkwardness form hovering over them. "So!" She claps her hands together. "I think...we just have to water these, a-and then we're all set!"[break][break]

Luka's shiny Sobble makes an appearance, the timid creature filling her watering can after a bit of gentle coaxing. With Anise overseeing Luka waters her rows of carefully planted carrots, then hands the can over for Izzy to do the same.
