Ever since the soiree, things have felt off.[break][break]

Luka's always been adept at ignoring unpleasantness, at shoving unwanted feelings down into the recesses of her gut. There they fester and churn, and sometimes they leak out. On those nights when Plum doesn't watch over her sleep the nightmares sometimes creep in; faces melding into one another and contorting in the mist, a pine box surrounded by white lilies, a feeling of loneliness so deep it makes her teeth ache.[break][break]

But more than herself, she worries about jayden cross. She hasn't seen the man since they were separated at the soiree. It had been so easy to get lost in that mist, but not so simple to escape it. Had Mickhail gotten out okay? Had he been lost to it? Or perhaps he had been targeted to one of those snipers, or the Unown, or—[break][break]

"Mickhail?"[break][break]

Her feet come to a sudden frozen standstill, heart lurching out of her chest. For a moment Luka thinks she's just seeing things, her friend (are they friends?) manifested in front of her simply because she's thinking of him. But hope bubbles in her chest regradless and she lurches forwards, chasing him down and waving frantically. She looks ridiculous.[break][break]

"Monsieur Volkov! Is...is that really you?!"

Through the crowd of people, it is nearly the perfect scene out of a rom-com. A lovely, pink-haired maiden standing in vibrant disbelief as she stares at someone that she shouldn't be seeing. In a movie, time would stop, the crowd would part, and Jayden would turn to her with a brilliant smile typical of that of a main protaganist.

[break][break] That being said, this wasn't a storybook romance.

[break][break] It was just a crowd. When Luka comes closer, she will be able to see that it's not her "Michail" but just merely a look-alike. After all, it's not like Jayden is particularly novel looking — he's tall, and dark-haired, but so are half of the eligible bachelors on Hoenn.

[break][break] The unnamed NPC-like characters gives the pink-haired maiden a look of confusion before disappearing into the crowd, and Luka is left alone.

[break][break] With the exception of a stray Umbreon, who stares at her briefly, before quickly darting away.

Humiliation mingles with disappointment in equal measure. Stammered apologies are met with with a raised brow and bemused dismissal, and Luka awkwardly waves goodbye as the stranger takes their leave and disappears into the crowd.[break][break]

It's not the first time she thought she'd spotted jayden cross on the streets of Hoenn. But this time, she had been so certain. The same hair, the same gait- or perhaps she's remembering it wrong. Memories erode and fade with time, and hers are no exception. At this rate, her 'Monsieur Volkov' has been missing even longer than she ever knew him.[break][break]

Regardless, disappointment leaves a bitter taste. Luka swallows dryly and takes a few aimless steps forward, her purpose forgotten as sentiment and loss creeps in. Distracted and dazed, she overlooks a crack in the sidewalk and stumbles, barely managing to catch herself before taking an ungainly fall. But it's jarring enough to clear her head and force the clouds away. Maybe she'll call Remiel Calcifet later to make herself feel better.[break][break]

Her gaze flickers briefly towards a flash of movement, golden rings that disappear just as quickly into darkness. Luka blinks, but ultimately dismisses it. Searching for omens has never done her any favors.

It's not her fault. luka chêne is not wrong for chasing after the man who, by all definitions of the word, probably looked very much like him. However much like the ghosts that keep his company, Jayden is illusive — a flicker of a memory, tucked far, far away in the recesses of Hoenn's existance.

[break][break] Speaking of ghosts, Luka should feel the presence of a few in the air suddenly. There are flashes of apparitions that appear in the air - one such in particular might race through the air in the form of a Shuppet that cackled menacingly in the distance.

[break][break] Is that a pokemon? Or a nightmare?

[break][break] Maybe that's enough to have a shiver run down someone's spine.

Spindly arms curl around herself, squeezing warmth into the empty spaces around her limbs. It's not enough. Seeking comfort, Luka releases her Togepi and cuddles him instead, indulging in the reserves of cheer stored in his shell.[break][break]

Such little things, but they hold so much love in them. It's no wonder Luka feels such a kinship with the species.[break][break]

But even the comfort of her favorite baby can't stave away the ghosts of a recent past. They're made literal as Shuppet materialize and taunt her, drifting off into the middle distance. She hugs Toffee a little tighter and he squeaks— not out of discomfort, but concern.[break][break]

The call to action goes unanswered for now. Baby hairs prick at the back of her neck and Luka remains stock still and silent, cradling Toffee like a lifeline in her arms.

Darkness seems to fester from where luka chêne steps — whether this is real or fabricated, however, remains to be up to answer. A cloudy mist surrounds the area as the crowd seems to thin. But is this too a mirage? Regardless, it seems that the man that Luka had presumed to be an old friend is nowhere in sight.

[break][break] There is a shadow in the distance, a vaguely familiar shape of a man. Perhaps it's enough to draw someone's attention. Perhaps not. Another cackle of a ghost-type echoes through the air, menacing in it's harsh caterwaul.

[break][break] Then suddenly, out of nowhere, there is a voice.

[break][break] "Luka?"

[break][break] Violet eyes stand at the other end of the road, the fog surrounding him. The surprised face of jayden cross stands at the end of the path, blinking at the sight of the sakura-haired youth.

What if Alice had never ventured down the rabbit hole?[break][break]
Well, there wouldn't be much of a story. And as Luka feels herself compelled onwards, she can understand why Alice was unable to resist the call. The mist that surrounds her is unnerving, the sudden silence eerie, and yet she still takes a few tentative steps forward.[break][break]

If this is a new form of the interdream zone, she's ready for it. Cresselia's lunar wing dangles around her neck as she peers into the swirling fog and the shapeless form at the other side. There's something vaguely familiar about it— but faint, like the impression of a dream upon waking. It is not comforting.[break][break]

Toffee squeaks in her arms, and she realizes she's been hugging him too tight. White knuckles ease and she lets go with a murmured apology, only to yelp in surprise and squeeze him again as a ghostly cackle reverberates around them.[break][break]

This is not the dream zone. And just as Luka realizes her mistake, the distant figure beings to swim into focus. She gasps.[break][break]

"Michail?" This time, there's no cautious optimism to her voice. It drips with disbelief— she can no longer trust her eyes.[break][break]

But she can trust her ears. Once heard, always remembered— she'd know that voice anywhere. The corners of her eyes burn, but Luka still makes no move towards her friend (is he her friend?). Her heart can't take another bait-and-switch. He'll have to come to her.

It's been a while, yet there is no making the sight of her.

[break][break] There may not be the telltale hum of an orchestral backdrop, or starshine glittering in her eyes as he twirls her beneath the night sky. They may not be together at the Star Soiree, trying to fight off their inner demons and in Jayden's case, his outer ones. But he recognizes her either way.

[break][break] In a matter of minutes, he closes the distance between them both.

[break][break] He frowns — once getting closer, he notices the state of her. Contrary to their last meeting, when he had been compromised due to an impromptu stab wound to his chest, she seems to be the one compromised now.

[break][break] "Yes," he says, then looks down at her. "Are you okay?"

[break][break] His crystalline violet gaze glimmers with concern.

Luka remains stock-still and silent as Michail approaches, still clinging to her Togepi like a lifeline. Emerald eyes remain glued to his face; watching every movement, half expecting him to vanish back into the fog.[break][break]

But he doesn't, and the concern he fixed her with is so heartbreakingly gentle that she almost wants to cry. And yet she can't help bitter irony from seeping in— that he should be worried when she's agonized over his disappearance for months is almost laughable.[break][break]

"I'm—" Fine, she wants to say, but it rings hollow even inside her own head. Instead, Luka remains silent.[break][break]

Carefully, she shifts Toffee in her arms and reaches up with a trembling hand. Her fingers ghost along his jaw, reacquainting herself with the lines of his face. They drift to his cheek, and she half expects it to feel corpse-cold under her palm.[break][break]

She pinches, perhaps a little too hard, to make sure the flesh beneath her fingertips is real. It reddens, and she exhales a shaky laugh.[break][break]

"You're actually real," she murmurs. Disbelief crumbles into a cautious hope, and the barest hint of a smile clings to her lips.[break][break]

"What did— w-where did you...what happened to you?"

[attr="class","txtbox"] an old jayden may not have realized the slight nuances in her expression, may not have even realized that she was upset to begin with. however, his experiences with Chu-e Choi and mint frost have colored his expectation — luckily for luka chêne. or maybe not, depending on how she would feel.

[break][break] her fingers reach up to touch his jaw and jayden, though surprised, lets her. he does flinch initially at the touch - unused to such intimacy - but he can feel that there's something serious about the gesture. something important. he knows enough not to pull away, his eyes drawn to her inexplicably.

[break][break] "i'm real," he repeats. of course he was; why wouldn't he be?

[break][break] "what did— w-where did you...what happened to you?"

[break][break] his jaw locks. this question seems a little more difficult to answer. his brow pinches with confusion. what did she mean, exactly?

[break][break] perhaps she'd heard about the stabbing?

[break][break] "i — was busy," he says, wondering if she had somehow heard from mint frost or someone about the conditions of his departure from the region. he reaches beneath his shirt, revealing the scar given to him by Roman Maher. "or did you mean this?"

[break][break] underneath his shirt, beneath broad abs, she would find a ropey scar that has long since healed but was still visible. the result of the events of the star soiree.

"You're real." The relief that clings to her repeated assertion is palpable, reflected in the curve of her lips and the way her eyes soften. She wants to reach out and embrace him, to feel him in her arms, solid and present...but she holds herself back as her hand falls to her side.[break][break]

Her heart throbs, but not in the same way it had when they danced under the stars at the soiree.[break][break]

For grief is just love with nowhere to go, and she'd finally found somewhere else to put it.[break][break]

"You were busy," Luka echoes, concern trailing on the edges of each syllable. "W-with what? I tried to reach out so many times, but..." She trails into silence, eyes widening into saucers when Michail lifts up his shirt.[break][break]

Despite everything, she blushes. With a deep breath, she forces herself to focus on the length of scar tissue and ignore the expanse of defined muscle.[break][break]

"No, I didn't mean- h-how did you...are you okay?" A foolish question, perhaps, but one that bears asking. She wrenches her gaze up from his stomach and fixes violet eyes with a piercing emerald stare. "When did...were you hurt at the soiree? I tried to find you...I searched for ages! I- I'm so sorry."[break][break]

Heartbreakingly, her instinct is to shift blame to herself. "If I had known...i-if I hadn't left you that night, maybe I could have helped...I'm so sorry, Monsieur."

There are so many things Luka wants to ask. She wants to dig into Michail’s vague explanations and poor excuses, sink her teeth into them like a rabid dog and refuse to let go. She wants to grab him by the shoulders and shake him, beg him to tell her everything that happened, and where he was all these months.[break][break]

She wants to hold him. She wants to cry. Ultimately, she settles for the former.[break][break]

Toffee is shifted onto her shoulder and clings tightly as she steps forwards. Her embrace is hesitant at first, but as soon as her arms are around him she sinks into it like a warm bath. [break][break]

“It was…a lot,” she agrees slowly. “But it was so long ago now that I don’t really remember the details.” What sticks with her the most after everything are memories of a dance under the moonlight, twirling in sparkling chiffon, and the aching sense of loss that has plagued her ever since.[break][break]

“I guess…t-that doesn’t matter now, does it? It’s nice to see you too,” she replies, the words muffled against his chest. “I really missed you, Michail. I thought…I-I thought I’d never see you again.”

Her eyes flutter closed as they fall into silence. Luka presses her cheek against Michail's heart, comforted by the sound of it's steady thrum, the warmth and sureness of their embrace. His hands hold her steady, solidifying his presence in a way that's a little bit awkward— but it's so like him that she really doesn't mind.[break][break]

"How was I supposed to know that?"[break][break]
Luka turns her chin up to face him, realizing a moment too late that their faces are too close together. Her ears go red as she pulls back, having forgotten for a moment that her particular brand of clinginess is no longer appropriate.[break][break]
