There’s nothing particularly ostentatious about the graves, nothing that makes them stand out from the rest, and yet the fact that they even have graves marked with their names says enough in and of itself, for it’s more than what most of his pokémon received upon their deaths…

It sure is much more than what those recently given to Rocket’s scientist to be melted down for Exodus will get.

Pythia. Apate. Two Musharnas that had always been of use and loyal to him. Two Musharnas that died under circumstances he can’t even remember. What had happened that day? What had caused their demise in such a grotesque way? What had tried to kill him that day?

There are too many questions that remain unanswered, and seeing their names engraved upon granite only serves as a reminder.

The Musharnas get no flowers, because visiting their graves is not his main reason to be at Mt. Pyre.

Deja vu.[break][break]

He'd seen this scenario before, under different circumstances. The well-dressed man in the graveyard, yet another ghost chained to this place. Except this time, Izzy had seen him somewhere else before, too - at the submarine. This time Izzy was aware of him as something more than a fellow wanderer, or even as the bank CEO. He was now grossly aware that he was watching his boss - an Admin.[break][break]

Had he seen him, too, at the meeting, out the corner of one eye? It played at Izzy's heart like pins and needles. The idea of work life and real life interlinking like this, overcrossing like this - it filled Izzy was dread. There was too much that could go wrong.[break][break]

But another difference today, also, was that Mars had no pokémon out with him today. In fact, he's concentrated only on the twin graves he stands before. Izzy may be stupid in a lot of ways, but he could recognise quiet grieving when he saw it. Maybe it was some shred of humanity inside him, or maybe he really was stupid, but... he went over. Not right over, but close enough.[break][break]

"I'm sorry for your loss"[break][break]

It was presumptuous, of course, maybe Mars was just looking at unrelated graves. That mixed with everything else caused a thudding in his chest - if he got this wrong, everything could fuck up. But some part of him really did want to offer this moment of compassion to a fellow human.

It is incredibly presumptuous, and when the voice interrupts his thoughts, Mars turns to look at the source. Those amber eyes of his are cold and calculating, as if a wild creature watching helpless prey, and in them, there’s no sign of sadness or of actually being in mourning.

Just like the grunt knows he’s speaking to one of Rocket’s admins now, the latter knows he’s speaking to a member of Team Rocket, passing recognition during MAGMA’s recent meeting having sparked his curiosity.
[break][break]
”Don’t be sorry. They served their purpose.”
[break][break]
That is all that is said on that, for his attention is soon drawn to the Litwick that approaches, landing on Pythia’s headstone. Tentatively, cautiously, yet calmly, Mars decides to reach for it.

The name cut like a knife. Izydor. His own name, but still so foreign - he was Izzy to everyone, after all, and always had been. Most people didn't even know his full name, it wasn't as though he interacted enough for people to ask. This Mars is miles different to the one Izzy encountered previously, and he can see now why this man has done well enough to become an admin.[break][break]

He feels helpless. Defenceless. Like prey.[break][break]

They served their purpose. Who talks about dead pokémon like that?[break][break]

"Right... still, though..." He clears his throat for a moment, looks away to focus on anything but those piercing amber eyes. Indeed, distraction comes in the form of a little Dreepy, just courageous enough to float close to him, as though curious to his infiltration of the graveyard. Izzy holds his palm out to the curious dragon, lets it sniff him, and then offers it a pokéball.[break][break]

He turns to Mars once more - hesitantly - and sees him doing much the same with his own little guest.[break][break]

"...It's always so peaceful here"[break][break]

More an observation than a comment specifically aimed at Admin del Mar. And truth, at that - Izzy always felt calmness in this place, even despite the ridiculousness that has occurred on their last encounter at Mt. Pyre. His words hang awkwardly in their air, refrigerated in the misty aura of the graveyard.

Blue flame dances slowly in the shadows cast by tall trees, and Mars watches it in silence for a moment before a pokéball is pressed against the Litwick’s waxy body. Just like that, it disappears from sight, and the sphere’s light flickers for a few seconds before it too disappears as if fading from existence.

Does Mars care for having a Litwick? Not really, but the idea of letting it stand on Pythia’s headstone didn’t sit right with him.
[break][break]
”It can be. Probably because there’s not usually a lot of people to disturb the pokémon here.”
[break][break]
Not until recently, at least, since the appearance of the Unown Report seems to have drawn so many to Mt. Pyre with hopes of finding the mysterious Symbol Pokémon. Mars himself had been among them, and he had been successful at it too.

And speaking of pokémon that aren’t disturbed…
[break][break]
The familiar sight of a Starmie catches his eye, and Mars chooses to call out his own periwinkle one. It’s soon that the gems at their core shine, as if they were communicating with each other in a way only they could understand.

”Do you usually hangout at graveyards?”
[break][break]
There's nothing judgemental about his tone, but Mars will always be one to judge other whether he wants to or not. Doesn't everyone do so?

Izzy had also noted the influx of different people lurking around the area on their Unown hunts, but took little notice of the event aside from it's interruption of his usual quiet place. He told himself he preferred the silence, liked life better when nobody else was around to make things more complicated than they already were.[break][break]

But why, then, was he drawn to start a conversation when he'd seen Mars? Why did he join Victor Wexler at the campsite that night, why did he almost force a smile at BARNABY FINCH when they'd finished that mission together at the old house? Despite how he wanted to come across, Izzy ached for connection.[break][break]

His eyes are drawn to the Starmie as they blink to one another, a beautiful Morse code of crystal colouring that just the two of them could appreciate in it's full glory. Pokémon searched for one another, too.[break][break]

"Do you usually hangout at graveyards?"[break][break]

It seemed so judgy, despite not coming with that kind of tone. Perhaps it was Izzy's own anxiety working against him, but it nonetheless made him feel watched in a way he didn't feel comfortable with. He tugged awkwardly at the sleeve of his sweater - grey and dull, nothing special. He wasn't the type of guy to invest in garish Christmas sweaters, after all.[break][break]

In his moment to think, he notices a shy red eye peeking from what he assumed was a nearby tree - a Trevenant, so it seemed. He releases Myszko from his ball, nods in it's direction for the little lizard to go make friends.[break][break]

"...I don't... make a habit of it. I mean- not graveyards on purpose. Like..." He clears his throat. "I like it here, if that's what you're asking. Feels... calm. So I like that kinda thing"

Mars has never understood things like those.

How could he, when they’re things he so rarely feels? When conversations with strangers cause no turmoil within him at all, much less those with someone who he now knows to be his subordinate? Nothing about this is reason for anyone to be nervous in Mars’ opinion, and yet here is Izydor Baranowski, hesitating and stuttering.

What worries him so much?

Is he afraid of him?
[break][break]
That much Mars can understand, but being feared by members of Team Rocket is not something he cares for. Fear and respect are two very different things, after all.

”Relax, Izydor. You can hang out wherever you want.” There’s a shrug, his tone ever so light and casual while his gaze drifts away from the grunt, instead falling on a distant Chimecho. ”I just wondered why I kept running into you here, of all places.”

The explanation is given for the grunt's sake, more than anything, since Mars is rarely ever one to bother with explaining himself to others.

As Mars looks away, Izzy lets out a long sigh. He runs one hand through his hair, leaning against a gnarled tree along the path. He was gonna die of a damn heart attack if he didn't stop all this damn worrying - especially in front of an admin. Did he want one of his bosses thinking he was some weak kid?[break][break]

He nods, absentmindedly pressing his fingers against the hard bark of the tree he leans against. Grounding. He's learnt it well, from focusing on the pavement beneath his feet to deep, focused, controlled breathing - it was something non-optional for someone who's nightmares made them sink through the sheets and throw up a couple times a month.[break][break]

"Right... apologies, sir." He shifts his weight to "relax".[break][break]

"I just... like it here. It's calming. And peaceful. You don't find other people here - uh, not usually, at least. I just like places that are kinda quiet. I grew up in... the city, so. Quiet makes a nice change."

Perhaps if Mars knew of the things Izydor and him have in common, that he too has horrors stealing away his sleep, he would be more sympathetic towards the grunt. But, sadly for Izzy, the admin doesn’t know of such things, so of course he thinks of him as no more than a weak child.

Given the influx of people visiting the mountain ever since the Unown Report first appeared, running into someone has become all too likely. If anything, it makes Mars wonder about how busy samuel carter must be with cleaning up after all these visitors – it's a bad time to be him.

Even if Mars had any idea of how much he and Izzy shared between dark sheets and sleepless nights, Izzy would never have opened himself up to welcome sympathy. He struggled deeply with the concept of allowing even the people who called themselves his friends (usually by force, as per the cases of Ceri Glynn and BARNABY FINCH), so accepting something as dirty as pity from his superior would be like plunging hot needles into his eyes.[break][break]

He nods a little, gives an awkward, unpractised, attempt-at-polite smile. "Yeah, things got busy up here nowadays. I'd find somewhere else to hang, but the ghosts like it up here" He taps gently at a pokéball at his belt.[break][break]

A Spoink's little snorts are heard not too far away, coinciding with each bounce of it's springed tail. With his hand already so close, Izzy pulls an empty ball from the collection and aims it at the bouncing pokémon before him.[break][break]

"Even busy, it's definitely less crazy here than Slateport. You must be used to talking to a bunch of people everyday, though. Since... admin stuff."
