Sometimes, when catching a pokémon there’s a dire need to socialize them so they can be properly trained – to get them accustomed to the presence of people and other pokémon so they’re not fearful or aggressive. Mars knows this, of course, but with how busy he is it’s not often that he gets a chance to do this himself, which is why he’s thankful for the daycare that happens to be so close to the city where he lives.

”Don’t worry about it. I won’t take much of your time, then.”

Today, the pokémon he brought with him is a small shiny Noibat that unfortunately reminds him way too much of the one Eris Halla once had. A Noibat that looks just like the one that was lost on the day he also lost two of his Musharnas. The sight of it when the daycare attendant has released it from its pokéball brings one too many concerning thoughts, but Mars pushes them aside, distracted by the sound of the door opening behind him.

At the same time, as if by a cruel twist of fate, the attendant looks at her phone when receiving a text message that soon makes her go pale.

"What's wrong?" He asks, the daycare attendant's expression being cause for alarm. At least in their case. Before much can be said, however, they are racing out the door. Something about being sorry and being back soon. What stuck out the most was that they suggested Derek hold down the fort while they were gone...

As a ranger whose name was gaining renown, it was cool that they knew exactly who he was without having to ask. But that didn't stop him from wanting to make a U-turn out of there. "Welp...you wanna stick around and help me on this one too?" Mars seemed pretty generous with his time and labor, so maybe this wouldn't end up being all that bad.

”Derek! What a coincidence.”

Of course, Mars is not a man who believes in coincidences, and at this point he’s wondering why is it that he seems to keep running into the ranger when their lines of work don’t align at all. It’s suspicious, although even if it is, Mars still smiles with one of those same confident and amiable smiles that he gave back when they first met at the beaches of Dewford Town.

A smile that is soon replaced by concern when the daycare attendant rushes out of the building.

He sighs then, calmly turning to look at the watch at his wrist before giving Derek his answer:

”I have some meetings this morning, but I can spare an hour – maybe two – before that. Let’s hope she returns by then.”

Mars is busy as ever, but it would look pretty bad if he were to just leave Derek to take care of all these pokémon on his own, no? Plus, if there’s some other rare pokémon there, finding out the owners’ information could be beneficial later on…

To buy them, maybe to steal them. It all depends on the situation.

”Should we go look at what we’re dealing with?” He gives Derek a slight smirk then, petting the Noibat.

Or, out of the 'goodness of his heart', he would stay alone. Hopefully neither would happen and the person would return in a timely manner.

"Yeah, let's. Hopefully my Larvitar isn't making trouble for—" The thought is readily discarded when he moves to open the door out back. The pokemon are playing, happily at that. Although in the corner is his pokemon, trying to eat a Sandygast.

A blank expression is all he can muster in the moment. "Should've just kept my mouth shut." Moving over at a brisk pace, Derek dares to pull the Larvitar away, only for it to rear it's head and put the ranger on his ass with a grunt. "So that's how you wanna play it, huh?"

Retrieving a pokeball from the holster at his belt, his most trusted pokemon is released to effectively babysit. "Randal, restrain that little green fella." Promptly doing as asked, the Larvitar squirmed in defiance, but was ultimately subdued. "Sorry about that." Derek spouts towards the Sandygast as he stands, rubbing his head nervously. Maybe this was going to be harder than he thought...

As soon as Derek comments on how he hopes his Larvitar isn’t causing trouble, it becomes clear that the pokémon is indeed causing trouble, and even though it perhaps should be cause for concern, Mars can’t help but smirk at the irony of it.

”...Famous last words?” He may joke now, but there’s little time to do things like those, for just as the Larvitar is being dealt with, his own Noibat decides to take to the air and begin chasing after a poor little Cutiefly. So much for socializing his pokémon, huh?

”Don’t you start too.” Eyes roll, and he reaches up to catch the Noibat, the low ceiling thankfully not making the task all that difficult. He could have called it back to its pokéball, of course, but might as well take the chance to have it interact with others while he’s here.

For now, at least.

Once the struggling Noibat is firmly pinned under his arm, he looks up towards the Bug type to make sure it’s alright, then glancing at the rest of the pokémon in the room in case any others are causing trouble.

The Larvitar acted like it was out in the wild, giving into every single one of it's impulses and whims. If Derek didn't work quickly to correct it's behavior, it might not ever obey him. And as a ranger, he had no need for a truant pokemon.

Thankfully the rest seem to mean well and play nice, albeit that is until Derek notices a Munchlax chasing down a Togepi. Eggs were tasty, so it was easy to relate. Unfortunately, the Munchlax would be going hungry just a little longer.

"I gotcha!" Running to scoop up the Togepi in his arms, it seems scared at first to be confronted by the new face. However, once it realizes he is providing safety from the one who sought the eat them, the pokemon relaxes. A little tickle on the head is more than enough to ensure Derek means it no harm.

"Man, I didn't expect daycare work to be so busy." Children were, in ways, easier to deal with. That much was for sure. If nothing else, then because they didn't try to eat each other...

He’s teasing, obviously, but the fact is that with how bad the rangers’ general reputation is, they definitely don’t need more to discredit them – especially not silly rumours like that one. Who would trust someone that claims to want to help pokémon but that can’t stop their team from trying to munch on anything they find?

”Sure makes you wonder how they do this everyday, huh? Really takes some commitment.”

As he watches Derek save a Togepi from a “ferocious” Munchlax, a thought comes to mind:

Without waiting for a response from his apparent partner-in-crime (partner-in-impromptu-babysitting, is more like it), Mars approaches the small refrigerator that’s near the room, there indeed finding meals ready for all the pokémon. Breakfast!

Thankfully Mars gears the conversation in a different direction, questioning both the daycare workers and the appetite of all these pokemon. "Sounds like it's worth a try."

Moving towards the refrigerator alongside them, Derek sources out a bottle for the Togepi that it seems to be drawn towards. "This one yours?" A cute little nod suggests that it is, and so the ranger allows the pokemon to drink to it's heart's content while he carries it around like a baby.

If only for a moment, Mars considers asking why things have been busy, but frankly he’s simply not in the mood to be trying to get information out of a ranger. He could probably do it with ease, but it’s doubtful that it would be anything more interesting than what he heard the other day when he interrogated that one ranger with bryan delarosa. Hell, they might even be busy with searching for that sorry guy whose sobbing features Mars now can barely even remember.

Plus, they have all these hungry pokémon to deal with.

”Would have been nice to at least get some instructions or something.” There’s a laugh, ever so amiable and kind. It’s soon enough that the Cutiefly lands on his shoulder, and gently moving it to make sure that his expensive suit won’t get ruined, Mars offers the Bee Fly Pokémon a spoonful of what looks like some kind of baby food-type mush.

”There you go… I think I have a newfound appreciation for daycare workers now.”

Especially once the other pokémon swarm them, demanding their food after seeing the Togepi and Cutiefly getting theirs. One by one, Mars offers them the meals that he assumes are for them.
