grand cove casino was sprawling and luxurious from every angle, inside and out. extravagant decor, everything far too big and overstated, sparkling and gaudy. expensive stone paved the way to a slim chance at a fortune for the average hoennian.

but for some, like nina, that chance was substantially higher.

cheaters. hustlers. masterminds of heist. occasionally, the good-enough made it under the noses of sniffing pit bosses, and were able to carve into into sought-after urban goldmines.

nina was still small-time, but she was teetering at the edge of something greater. with rocket’s push and direction, her sights were set higher all the time.

today, she was working with a new dealer, employed by rocket to rig the games in her favor. sitting in front of them at a blackjack table, clad in a flashy little platinum number, she gestured, winning yet another hand.

”lucky, lucky,” she chirped. 'prii!' trilled a togepi in her lap, waving its tiny arms excitedly.

Donned in an expensive coat of black-and-red Swellow feathers around her shoulders, even those who didn't recognize the infamous Johto celebrity could look upon Amber and see she had money. To the casino itself and its more seedy regulars, Amber was sure she looked a perfect mark: young, dumb and blonde, without the good sense to pretend not to be any of those things. [break]
Not that Amber minded. High stakes, after all, were the point of gambling.[break]
"Don't you think this place is divine, Nyx?" Amber commented idly to the Absol that matched her every step. Grand Cove Casino might be considered ostentatious by those with a more discerning palate, but Amber reveled in its sparkling drama. Her Absol merely glanced up at her, as if resigned to accept her owner's tacky taste, but sweetly rubbed against her legs to forgive her for this latest of Amber's many, many transgressions.[break]
Normally it would be Amber's Umbreon, Luficer, trailing her but not today. An Absol spelled misfortune for those she didn't like, and that was in itself a type of luck for everyone else. Not that Amber was superstitious per se, but why not arrange things in your favor if you can, just in case? Already a few wary eyes had passed over them both, conflicted by this combination of easy money and a Pokemon of ill portents.[break]
It was then that Amber saw nina larson -- a pretty young thing sitting at the nearby blackjack table, a Togepi chirping in her hands. A little rough around the edges, perhaps, but Amber preferred people that way. They were more interesting than those with too much polish.[break]
Without a word, Amber slipped into the seat beside Nina, and Nyx curled up at her Mistress's feet on silent command. "Deal me in," she said, her slick black nails tapping against the table as she winked to her new competitor. "I hear this table's lucky."

nina looked over as someone joined her at the table. though she didn’t notice her celebrity, the feathers and expensive adornments caught her eye immediately.

she was quite the diva herself. from stacked eyelashes and designer cloth, she looked up with an impeccable glam rivaled by few—but perhaps this woman, who looked more than a bit ripe for the robbing.

with a small, pearly smirk, she welcomed, ”has been for me. good luck,”

the cards were dealt, and long, shiny fingernails tapped on the felt lightly.

the first hand would be won by amber, and nina looked over again. ”nice start.”

"Is it a cliche to say beginner's luck~?" Amber said with a girlish laugh, covering her mouth with a manicured hand. On the inside, however, the gears in her mind were turning.[break]
An ace and a ten-point on the first round? That was suspiciously good. Enough to make her think someone wanted her to feel comfortable. The odds of that outcome on a first turn were low, to say the least--4.83%. But not impossible.[break]
Perhaps Nyx's Pure Luck had been at play. Perhaps not.[break]
While it'd be right to assume Amber did poorly in school, it'd be wrong to assume she didn't know a lot about two things near and dear to her heart: money, and social media. And both required some proficiency in math and statistics.[break]
With great interest, she watched her glamorous neighbor receive her cards from the dealer, crimson eyes flicking from one to the other carefully. "You're not a bad player yourself," she commented as her Absol stretched leisurely at her feet. "Tell me about yourself, mysterious stranger."[break]
This was the fun part of gambling--learning who was playing next to you, and if they were at all interesting. Those odds changed from game to game.

”of course not.” she believed whole-heartedly in luck.
after a won hand, nina’s eyes left the table and back to the designer diva beside her, casting a smile from beneath a convincing lilac wig.

”just lucky, i guess.”

her togepi trilled again, agreeing maybe.

she wasn’t counting cards. she didn’t need to, with the dealer’s aid. trust was building between them, gradually, despite hardly any words having been shared.

attention remained on the woman.

”usually people ask me about myself over a drink,” lashes batted once. ”my name’s kyla.”

At the batting of Kyla's eyelashes, Amber smirked. Was this stranger flirting with her? That could be fun.

"Kyla's a pretty name," Amber said instead of introducing herself, filing this information away as turned her attention to her hand. Ah. No luck this time. Worse--terrible luck. She laughed as she splayed her losing hand in front of her, black fingernails glittering as she snapped her fingers to draw the attention of one of the wandering waiters.

"Mother always said I had no manners. What drink would you like? Only fitting for a loser to treat a winner, of course."

Her crimson eyes sparkled with mirth, but there was calculation in them. There was something so... relaxed about this woman. It was intriguing, and Amber couldn't place why. It was enough to make her want to stay at the blackjack table longer, even if her winning streak was running dry; Nyx fidgeted restlessly at her feet, the Absol growling softly in protest as Amber started another round, refusing to heed the Pokemon's warnings.

What was the harm in being a little curious, after all?

nina continued to play as well, dealt another winning hand. she hardly paid it much attention, except to flash an appreciative smirk to the dealer. her eyes quickly returned to amber, and her lips balanced into a smooth smile. ”you think so?”

her eyes lingered there a moment longer, almost as though searching for something in her red depths, before her attention rose to the waiter.

”gin and tonic would be lovely, thank you.” and, back to amber. ”and thank you.”

"You heard the lady. I'll take a gin and tonic, too." Amber winked after motioning to the waiter, enjoying the beverage even as her luck continued to sour and wane at the blackjack table. Her focus on winning had shifted; now it was the beautiful, lilac-haired woman that had attracted her whole attention. People were rarely more compelling than money, or the thrill of gambling.

"You don't like talking about yourself, do you?" It was a rarity in Amber's profession, and a quality she herself lacked. "Probably wise in a place like this, with the winning streak you have."

It was uncommonly good, truth be told. Amber couldn't help but wonder if she was counting cards, but if so, she wouldn't be the one to rat her out. As her mother had always said, It's not cheating if you aren't caught.

the wink was received with an appreciative smile. the way her body turned gave amber the spotlight of her attention, drawn away from the table even as she leaned against it.

her head dipped to the other side as she replied, ”well, i don’t see what’s wrong with winning…”

she inclined towards her an inch. not close enough to invade her space, but certainly enough to show interest.

”is there something you’d like to know?”

nina wondered what the woman’s name was, but she waited. this was a slow game that she was playing. when they were a spontaneous target, it was often better to play it cool.

What an open-ended question.

"Hmmm!" Amber leaned back in her chair, clicking her tongue in thought, before leaning forward with a sudden burst of inspiration (the sudden motion startling the Absol resting at her feet to no small degree). "Do you know the game Two Truths and a Lie?" she asked, a tad impishly, as she indicated the number three with her fingers. "It's pretty simple. Tell me two things about yourself that are true, and one that is a lie. Anything you want at all."

Eyeing the chips in front of her, she pushed them forward and said, "Let's make it more interesting though, since we're here. If I can't correctly guess the lie, I give you the rest of the chips I have for the day." Despite her losses, the chips she'd amassed was no small number; Amber's wealth rarely went to good uses, but it was splurged here often. She winked. "If I guess right, though, you double my number. Sound fun? We're here to gamble, after all."

”okay. let’s do it.”

her elbow rested on the edge of the table casually, waiting for the extra spice the woman had in store for their game. at the idea, she smirked, brow wrinkling a little. ”double?” that didn’t seem quite fair—but she’d go with it. ”fine.”

without missing a beat, she rattled off a string of three lies.

“i’m twenty-eight, recently divorced, and vacationing from unova.”
