It had cost just about every leftover bit of Christmas earnings he had, but Locke could finally afford a simple grave marker for Orbee-Orbee on Mt. Pyre proper. The outdoor plot was more susceptible to the elements than the indoor ones, but it was cheaper, and he was around often enough for work he could drop by and clean it up now and again.

And the view was nicer.

Locke let the floral scent of the incense wash over them for a moment after they finished cleaning the headstone, before standing up, brushing off their pants, and going to find the nearest bench.

Still, she could never forget where she'd laid Sae to rest, a circle of stones set carefully around a singular, blooming white egret orchid. It had taken a lot out of her to dig the grave, a horribly silent experience that had left her lips raw and bleeding by the time she was done. Not a single cry was let loose, simply for the reason that she knew what she'd done.

Even now, she stands before the grave, struggling to vocalise her thoughts. The rocks have been scattered, forcefully thrown to the sides and away from the grave. Her nails dig deep into her palm, threatening to break the skin. Why is she here? What is that sensation wrenching her guts?

She, of all people, doesn't have the right to cry over this.

Again, they find each other in the worst of circumstances.

He would think the pair of them were cursed, if he didn’t already know for a fact that the curse he and Eris did share had little to do with this unintentional habit of theirs, and involved about four other people and a different buried creature altogether.

He fought the urge to scratch his hand.

Locke dragged their feet a bit as they got closer to the girl, scattering a few loose pebbles down the steps to alert her to their presence. They stopped a few feet away anyway, giving her the chance to reject the company if she wanted.

"...I was gonna find a place to sit, if you wanna warm up a bit."

Had it been anyone else, she may just have dismissed or snapped at them but Locke's voice rings with a purity and a sincerity that she can't seem to turn away.

Surrounded by gloom and reminders of death no matter where they turn, it's honestly a little easier on her heart to remain where she currently stands. The air that she breathes gnaws at her lungs, leaving her with a mild sense of discomfort as she falls silent. Reiner paws the ground, keeping his gaze down as he stays by her side. It may be cold but this chilliness is just a reminder of her wrongdoings, isn't it? She doesn't deserve any of this... she never truly deserved to have any bits of hope or happiness.

That much had been made clear when her sunshine had been taken away.

Indecisive as always, he didn’t say anything; just offered his hand and ignored the way the ink kept reaching for her beneath the skin well after he’d stopped it.

”I doubt that.”

Again, Locke wanted to point out that nobody knew what killed Sae. Again, their head pounded in the absence of that knowledge, as if to scream that they should know, they should know, why don’t they know?

Instead, his hand lowered a bit when Eris still held back, retreating back to the safety of solitude like the wounded and cowardly thing it was. But the ink tugged and his head hurt and fate twisted around them both with too-red strings that Locke just wanted to rip and tear at until the threads laid frayed and harmless around them; until they were finally free.

Wordlessly, he reached out and took her hand anyway, coaxing her down into a hug.

It suddenly struck Locke that there was something noticeably missing from this scene.

”Eris,” he started as he gently pulled them apart, though, ever-seeking physical contact these days, still keeping one hand on her arm. ”Did nobody come up here with you?”

Maybe she’d wanted to be alone. Maybe she hadn’t wanted to explain the situation to whoever was taking care of her (an image flashed in Locke’s mind; a petite, dark-haired man carrying a bruised and battered girl on his back, deep below the earth). They hadn’t told their family, after all, about any of the countless terrifying scenarios they’d been forced through as of late. Even though, contradictorily, they would’ve given anything for their mother’s hand in theirs right now.

Locke couldn’t imagine Eris not wanting the same.

It confirmed what he’d assumed down in the crypts. Locke hadn’t noticed anything particularly unwell about Chu-e Choi before, but then, there had been a great number of other things on his mind at the time. And afterwards.

Maybe they’d misread the situation with Merlino though. Or at least the man’s capacity to care for his underlings. But he and Eris’ father had stuck close to each other then, hadn’t they? And Eva Morales had said she’d been taken away by him after she’d been injured in the excursion, and had seemed well enough the next time they bumped into each other.

Locke frowned as they tried to piece together the puzzle that was Cillian Quinn with the few pieces they had.

”Oh. I guess I just assumed since-well since you’re both-”
