Locke gave the area around the pair a furtive glance, making careful sure there was no one around to hear, before speaking in a very quiet voice. ”Eris, I know you’re with Rocket.”

There was no accusation in tone. He wasn’t angry, or even disappointed, and he tried to keep his voice steady and reassuring as he continued. ”I won’t act like a completely understand, and I definitely won’t pretend like I agree with Rocket in any way. But-”

They considered how phrase the next part as carefully as possible.

”But I get that it’s probably…more complicated than it seems. And I’d still like to be friends, if that’s alright.”

Locke listened patiently as Eris finally seemed to open up, keeping their expression open and soft even when the revelation of their shared region came to light. It made sense, really. Too much sense. Leaving had been hard enough, but nothing could've made them stay behind with things as they were.

It'd been easy to imagine all of Rocket as some collective boogeyman; the monster waiting for them outside the closet. But it was even easier now to picture themselves in Eris' shoes. If they'd been a little younger. If the world had treated them just a little more cruelly. If they'd landed just a little closer to that line when they stepped off the boat.

How many other Eris' were there on the other side of that line?

How many of them needed her like she needed them?

"…I can get that, at least," he finally replied.

"I know what it's like to be all your own, far, far away from the people who love you. It's whole reason I do what I do. So if you say they're your family-if you say they care about you-then that's all I need to hear. I'm glad you have people like that." He ducked to meet her gaze, sincerity pushing every word forward. "And I'd like to be like that too!"

The bold proclamation fully registered in his own mind a few seconds too late, followed by a wave of embarrassment that left him stammering to clarify. ”That is-I guess I just want you to know that-um…”

”just reach out, locke. whenever you need to.”

”You can reach out, okay? I know I'm not much, but just give the word, and I’ll be there. Any time, any place.”

She's still shaking when she pulls him into a hug, shutting her eyes as she rests her head against his chest. It's not the solution to everything she faces but if it eases the ache for even just a moment, she's fine with trying to believe his words.
