You're walking through the mall without a care in the world; it's Hoenntide, the year's end celebration, and everything is as it should be. High spirits, sparkling ornaments, pricy presents... what more could you ask for out of a holiday?

Adrian walks through the mall content with window shopping when he notices a stretch of garland missing from along the walls and a security officer enduring the pointed remarks of an outraged manager.

Ease it up a bit there, Scrooge...

It's only when another centerpiece of their festive decorations disappears right under their noses that Adrian detects a whiff of mischief about, and decides to show a little concern as a good Samaritan. The mall security is talking to someone over his walkie-talkie when Adrian approaches, raising a hand in informal greeting.

"Something the matter here?"

What kind of thief steals garland?

Or, at least that’s the answer that comes to the ranger’s mind when overhearing the angered manager loudly ask said question, the security guard’s discomfort being obvious even from a distance.

She had come to the mall to do some Christmas shopping, but watching the scene, the ranger can’t help but feel duty-bound to help out.

So, it’s with a sigh that she approaches, offering a smile to the security guard just as he explains what’s going on to someone who seemed to have a similar idea.

”Hey. Need a hand?” It’s then when she shows him her ranger badge, as if to make all this easier for everyone.

"Hm?" Looked like more help was on the way; and although it wasn't really his place to turn away help, he would not have rejected the insight of a Ranger. Basically meant he could sit back and do next to nothing but supervise.

Once everything was smoothed over, he made the obvious ask: "So... What do we think it is scurrying around up there?" Could've been a lot of things, but whatever it was, Adrian only knew that it could scuttle about on vertical surfaces faster than he would've thought possible. So probably a reptile or bug if he had to guess.

Oh, and it might've been nesting in the vents. Ew.

”Hmm… It’s hard to tell. Some reptile, maybe? There’s a lot of wild pokémon living in the city and its surroundings, and places like the vents make for good shelter.”

That’s probably the reason why whatever their thief may be wandered into the mall, and considering that through the vents it can go just about anywhere in the building and find both cool and warm spots, it’s no wonder it has stayed and tried to make it its home.

”I doubt we’ll be able to lure it out of its nest, so the best way to go about it might be to send a pokémon in to have a look. Oh!... I’m Lia, by the way. Thanks for deciding to help out.”

A slight smile tugs at her lips when introducing herself, the pair soon being directed towards the nearest access point to the vents.

He shared most of Lia's observations, nodding his head in consensus. Who to send up there, though? Adrian could hardly remember every single pokemon he had in his possession, relying on his storage app to display most of that for him. And so he began flicking through his phone, noticing most were terrible choices.

"Adrian. Don't mention it." Keeping up appearances was part of a good cover. That, and maybe an inconsequential part of him actually enjoyed helping others, if only for how lucrative such ventures proved themselves. Eventually he spots his Caterpie during the search.

Never trained, and hardly a fighter. He'd feel a little guilty sending up into who-knows-what's hangout, but they needed to start poking around to get some answers.

"I've got a Caterpie we could send up." Clicking and dragging it along the app, Adrian was able to withdraw the pokeball at a nearby PC System connected to the network. From there he released a rather typical caterpillar onto his shoulders, the creature chewing at his hair before realizing it wasn't quite the leafage it'd been hoping for. "Alright bud, think you can scout the vents up there for us? Come back if there's trouble, but see if you can't lasso whatever it is outta there..." Adrian held an arm upwards towards the wall, guiding the pokemon towards the ventilation shaft.

That’s indeed the question, one Lia doesn’t really have a proper answer for. Her Emolga are small enough to fit in the vents and move around just fine, sure, but whatever is in there could likely think of them as a potential meal or something. She’d rather not take that risk.

Adrian’s answer, on the other hand, is a Caterpie.

”That works, yeah. Be careful in there.”

Still, she can’t just leave a civilian to do all the work, can she? So, it’s out of an Ultra Ball that an Emolga of autumnal colours is released.

”I’ll send one of my Emolga in for support, if worse comes to worst it can probably paralyse whatever is in there. You got that, Momo?”

Amusingly enough, the Emolga salutes Adrian and Lia before heading into the vent too.

"Alright, sounds good." It takes awhile for Caterpie to make its way up and through the ventilation, and the seconds pass by painstakingly as they await a response in the form of exclaimed cries. Both of them were rightfully apprehensive to send their pokemon face-first into an unknown situation... He'd done it once before, and in his hubris lost a dear friend from his childhood. He endeavored to make that the last mistake of its kind.

It's probably five or ten minute before they begin to hear something: BANG! They can hear the muffled cries of their pokemon and the sound of metal warping under duress. BZZZT! A betting man would've assumed the Emolga was cutting loose. Adrian grimaced at the sound, wondering how they would hold up surrounded by metal.

Eventually the Caterpie comes rappelling out of the vent, a string shot extending back into the opening drawn taut from the tug-of-war going on between them. For a moment Caterpie looks to be barely holding on, sticking its suction pads against the floor in a desperate bid until, finally, flying out came their culprit in an undiscernible blur.

"Way to go Caterpie; just like I asked ya! Good job." He gave the pokemon an enthusiastic thumbs-up before turning his attention to the problematic pest they'd dragged out of the vents. "So you're the bugger..."

The utter sense of helplessness that comes from not even being able to watch their pokémon take care of this whole “garland thief nesting in the vents” situation is not welcomed, and as they stand there waiting for long minutes, her brows furrow. Even less welcomed are the concerning sounds that soon come from the vent, but soon enough, Adrian’s Caterpie comes out, pulling along a Trapinch on whose back her Emolga stands – as if it had NUZZLED the Ant Pit Pokémon into paralysis.

Momo jumps off the Trapinch’s back, gliding onto her shoulder, and once everything has settled down, she can’t help but find herself smiling at the brave Caterpie and its owner.

”That was amazing, great job! Can’t believe it was a Trapinch, though… My best guess is it must have belonged to someone or that it came here all the way from the beach. And a shiny one of all things…”

"Who just forgets a pokemon, though...?" Although it's compelling to try and come up with answers, Adrian was only so far concerned as to solve the riddle of the elusive garland thief. Short of that, he didn't have much of an interest in the little guy, although his unique coloration sure was captivating. It could fetch a fair price...

"Oh well, all's well that ends well. Thanks for the help, Lia." While the security staff try to figure out what to do with it, an ad begins to blare over the mall speakers urging customers to shop, shop, SHOP! It's obnoxious, even more than the next song that begins playing over the radio:

Surrendering the Trapinch to their custody and withdrawing his Caterpie, it wasn't long before the unwelcome vibes of the overrated holiday jingle drove the Trapinch to wit's end, the critter burrowing its head into the ground just to escape the miserable tune.

...Me too, pal. Me too...
