The cable car ride had been fairly quiet. Mars was a busy man, and if he'd been on his phone for most of the trip, she was sure he'd had a good reason. Business things, or...personal things. Either way, she kept to herself about it and spent her time on Sarin, her Taillow who had yet to see much in the way of training.[break][break]

He was a brave soul though, and Matilda figured there probably was much more he could teach her than the other way around. She was sure to give him words of encouragement and (almost) all the snacks he wanted on the way down, so he could fly unimpeded by his stomach whether it be too empty or too full.[break][break]

Once they'd begun their hike Mars seemed a bit less distracted, so Matilda took the opportunity to try to get to know him a bit better. "So, you specialize in Psychic types? What made you choose Psychics?" Mattie would occasionally glance at her companion, but more often than not she was focused on where her feet were placed so she hopefully wouldn't embarrass herself this time around.

Mars was indeed a busy man, and that meant that even when he wanted to dedicate a few hours to looking for pokémon in the wilderness with a friend, a few calls still had to be made. It was the sort of thing he would have dealt with from his office, but alas, doing so from the cable car also worked well.

Once they touch down upon Jagged Pass though, all of his attention falls upon Matilda Greenlaw.

”Psychic and Water types, actually. There’s a few reasons I could give you, but the main one is just that they’re my favourite types… If I’m going to keep pokémon and train them, they should be ones I like, right?” He smiles at her then, releasing two Alolan Raichus from their respective Luxury Balls. ”I really like some of things Psychic types can do. Like that.”

He gestures at the Raichu and the way they float through the air, surfing upon their tails. Their adorable and large ears twitch, and one even waves at Matilda.

Matilda giggles and waves back to the Raichu. "I actually have a Pichu - I'm hoping he evolves into an Alolan Raichu. They're so cute." Matilda takes a moment to connect with the two Psychic Raichu, waving back and showering them with pets and snacks, as long as Mars approves. "Psychic and Water types - excellent choices." Watching the two Raichu play, Sarin takes flight and stretches his wings, enjoying his new companions. [break][break]

"Psychic types are unbelievably powerful," Mattie mentions offhandedly. "My Gothitelle, Garnet, is more useful than I ever would've thought." She pauses, glancing over at Mars. "Hey, I've been meaning to ask - of everything you find important, Eris Halla seems to top the list for you. Is she maybe..." Leaving the question open-ended so as to not offend the man, she looks up at him through her eyelashes, waiting for an answer.

There’s a slight smirk at the memory of his Raichu’s performance during his gym battle against Alexei Ivanov. But, while Notus may indeed be trained for battles, he’s also not above accepting treats and affection from anyone, and he’s thrilled when Matilda offers both of these things.

”Gothitelle, huh? Great choice.”

In truth, Mars could gladly talk about Psychic types for hours, but it’s Matilda’s next comment that causes him to stare at her – a brow quirking despite the way the smirk remains.

”Is she what?”

The implication is obvious, and he can’t help but chuckle at the thought.

”Eris Halla is not related to me, if that’s what you’re wondering. Although, in all honesty, she’s kind of like a little sister to me... She reminds me a lot of what my childhood was like.”

Excitement dances in her eyes at the offer of learning from a Trainer with a gym badge. "Oh that would be so great! I haven't taken on any gym challenges yet, but I definitely have a few Pokemon who would be happier in that kind of environment. Rigel is definitely one of them. Sarin here is another." The Taillow flits about above the group, happy to stretch his wings.[break][break]

Mattie's lips turn downward in an uncharacteristic frown as Mars explains his relationship to Eris. The small girl seemed to enjoy her days and the time she spent adventuring, but what a horrible way to grow up. Parents never around, leaving you to be raised by a Pokemon and whoever's around that cares more about you than them, the people who are supposed to love and protect you. Not like she had much room to talk, mind you, but at least her parents found a good place for her and sent her away out of love and a sense of protection, not a lack thereof. [break][break]

Staring quietly ahead, Matilda gets lost in her thoughts as the two walk, completely unaware of her troubled expression.

He smiles at her excitement, for while it had been anticipated, it’s still nice to see. Gym challenges may not be something Mars cares much for unless he has other reasons to benefit from one, but he will always be of the belief that it’s important for people to have pokémon that are trained for battle – especially in a place with as many dangers as Hoenn.

”Are you interested in that sort of thing? Gyms?”

With the casual question, his attention turns to the skies where a Xatu happens to be flying by. It’s then when Mars whistles once, and the moment he does, electricity fills the air, a TERRAIN expanding around them.

With her speed now doubled, Auster rushes towards the Xatu, aiming an ELECTRO BALL the bird’s way, soon to be followed by one of Notus’ – both Raichu working in tandem.

Quick and effective. The Xatu doesn’t stand a chance.

”...Matilda?”
[break][break]
Still, even while mostly watching the attacks, Mars doesn’t miss the troubled expression of the woman by his side.

His question causes her to tilt her head up to him but her expression doesn't change. She ponders the question, having never really thought of taking on Gym challenges. Mattie suspected no one who knew her would say that she was exactly 'Challenger material'. [break][break]

Mars' sharp whistle completely breaks Matilda's concentration and she watches the small scuffle with interest. It could hardly be called a battle - the Xatu never had a chance against those two Raichu.[break][break]

Mattie runs her thumb over one of her own Pokeballs, doing her best to think about what Mars had asked her when Sarin lands on her shoulder and with a chirp and a sharp jerk of his beak over her shoulder, Matilda turns around to see a Combusken just a few yards away. It scratches at the ground and exhales sharply as though preparing to charge the two. Completely out of self-preservation Matilda hurls the Pokeball at the Pokemon, her eyes widening as she takes several steps backward despite the Pokeball hitting its mark perfectly, pulling the Combusken into the capsule just as it steps forward. Sarin and Mattie both stare at the Pokeball for a few moments making sure the capsule doesn't break open. When it seems all is safe, Sarin flies over and grabs the Pokeball in his talons, flying it over to Mattie and depositing it in her open and waiting hand.[break][break]

The sound of her name on Mars' tongue pulls Mattie out of her disbelief. The remnants of a memory from the Christmas party put a slight blush on her cheeks, but she meets the banker's gaze. "Mmhmm?" She asks, having completely forgotten the previous topic at this point.

She seems distracted, but perhaps he shouldn’t think much of it when earlier he had been distracted as well. So, his attention remains on their surroundings, watching as Auster effortlessly catches the Luxury Ball he throws midair right after the Xatu is caught.

The Alola Raichu surfs through the air towards him in order to give back the ball, and Mars finds himself smiling faintly at her – a hand reaching to pet her once the Luxury Ball has been put away.

It’s only then that he looks at Matilda again, and the smile upon his lips remains when he meets her gaze.

Nearby, a Machop seems to be practicing its punches against a tree, but without a command from their trainer, the pair of Raichu completely ignore it.

A few yards away Sarin comes darting out of the underbrush with a small Riolu chasing him. The sudden sound makes Mattie jump, but she quickly realizes the two are simply playing and her Taillow isn't in any danger. She sighs softly, shaking her head and chuckling. Not talking to anyone in particular, she says out loud, "Well, I guess she's gonna be coming home with us too."[break][break]

After a small pause, she touches Mars' arm and her smile switches to a look of gentle concern. "...are you alright?" She doesn't elaborate, letting him assume what exactly she's asking so hopefully he opens up about whatever was bothering him - however old the wound may be. [break][break]

Trust is not something that comes easily to Mars, for some of the people he has trusted the most in life have also caused him the most pain (just ask Pace Mahmoud). He has taught himself not to trust, he has learned to expect the worst from others. So, when Matilda Greenlaw asks him if he’s okay, he simply looks at her…

So caring, so kind… It’s enough to make him smile.

Leave it to Mars to always find a reason to smile with honesty, no matter how bad things might be. If anything, it’s as if his own self-defence mechanism in many ways.

Mars' smile is there, and it's genuine, but Mattie could sense it was a cover. If he didn't want to talk right now, that was alright - she'd just have to continue bothering him until he knew he could trust her.[break][break]

"No reason," she tells him nonchalantly and turns her attention back to the new Pokemon skipping around them. The Riolu seemed to almost not care at all about the rest of the group - but it would seem that was Sarin's talent, making new friends left and right. Watching Sarin dive and feint as the Riolu playfully hops about trying to tag him Matilda can't help but smile. Pulling a Pokeball from her pocket to encapsulate the newest member of her team, she runs her thumb gently over the button and a shard of a childhood memory flashes through her mind.[break][break]

"Of course you can't trust me. You can't trust anyone. The people you love are the ones who will hurt you the most."[break][break]

Mattie tosses the Pokeball and captures the Riolu mid-hop. After the click of finality, Sarin grabs the ball and deposits it into Mattie's waiting hand. Staring at the red and white capsule with a small frown, she releases the Riolu and lets her continue her game of Dive and Feint with Sarin as the group continues on their way out of Jagged Pass.[break][break]

Her frown disappears as she looks back up at Mars and reflects the genuine smile he'd bestowed her with earlier. Fuck that mentality. She'd made it out of there, and she'd be damned if she was going to let her mind continue to be locked up by them.

There are many reasons why someone like Matilda Greenlaw shouldn’t trust Mars, starting by the fact that unbeknownst to her, he’s among the higher ups of the criminal organisation that took Kanto and that causes constant strife with Hoenn’s own League. He has done things most would consider unspeakable and was trained for it from a young age, but of course, most would never even imagine this.

How could they, when he smiles so easily? When he makes friends wherever he goes and has the public image of someone who cares for bettering society?

The worst part is all that is honest.
