[attr="class","tctext"] Within the brisk chill of the night air, the fog of Elisa's breath froze before her as she tied on her ice skates. Her cheeks had been tinted pink with the flush of winter; even her trim white coat couldn't entirely insulate her from the plummeting temperature. Nature could be cruel and unforgiving when it wanted to be, but there was still splendour to be found in the stark, lifeless snowscape.[break][break]

Save for the watchful gaze of her Decidueye, Basil, no one else seemed present here. Elisabeth could have chosen a more populated locale for her ice skating, but this secluded pond outside Oldale was far more attractive to her; she was solitary by nature, and still had yet to get accustomed to the crowds that formed in Hoenn's busy and active populace.[break][break]

Besides, it had been a long time since she had enjoyed the simple pleasure of ice skating. Predictably Elisabeth's skill had gotten rusty in the years since she was a young, daydreaming girl in Camphrier Town. She fell once, twice, three times on the glittering ice, then rose to her feet each time with a rich laugh that spilled from her lips.[break][break]

Movement felt good. Even the pain of her knees scraping against the ice was pleasurable, in a way. It reminded Elisabeth that she was still here, alive and free. Her heart sang for the knowledge of it.[break][break]

Twirling on the ice, Elisabeth's skirts swirled about her legs in a ripple of magenta fabric as she finally completed a graceful figure-8, halting with a short breath to admire her progress.[break][break]

As Elisabeth skidded to a stop, however, Basil let out a sharp, warning chirp. The blush in Elisabeth's cheeks darkened as her eyes narrowed. She had not, in fact, been alone.[break][break]

His skates slung over his shoulder haphazardly, Klaus's head bops lazily to the music filtering through his headphones, the occasional snatch of decidedly off key and half-sung words clumsily filling the air.

"Oh .. love you ... words... one," the young man drones, wholly unaware of his audience as he approaches the frozen pond. "Roped up, tied up," Klaus continues in a warbling tenor, clearly a bit too into his music if the little shuffle of his feet is any indication. With dark blue hair tipped in white peeking out from beneath his woollen hat, the stranger's outfit of a black puffer coat and bright orange pants certainly paints a picture.

Klaus flops himself down on a tree stump near the edge of the water, his hands moving to pull the skates from over his shoulders, only to pause when he finally notices he is not entirely alone. Mouth opening and then promptly closing, magenta-rose eyes stare widely at Elisabeth upon the ice, the colour of his face rapidly turning a shade rivalling his horrified gaze.

Scrambling to pull his headphones off his ears, he glances around rapidly to see if anyone else has observed his one-man show, and then chokes out a strangled, "H-hey!" in greeting. "Come here often," Klaus hazards after seeming to decide that's odd, his hands momentarily hiding his face as he groans out an "Oh god," before trying again with, "I'm so sorry. Um. I'm Klaus? Hi?"

[attr="class","tctext"]The startled look of horror on the man's face and the absolutely abysmal attempt at a pick-up line both seemed to ease the wariness from Elisabeth's gaze. Whoever this was, he seemed entirely harmless--and somehow more embarrassed than Elisabeth herself, from the looks of things. Had he not seen her stumbling at all, then?[break][break]
Skating towards where Klaus had plopped himself and dissolved into mumbling apologies, the blonde gestured for Basil to fly properly into view and join her. No sense in making things more awkward for everyone involved by having her Pokemon spy on the sidelines.[break][break]
"Elisabeth," she introduced herself to Klaus politely, ignoring the initial statement out of kindness. She then turned to the Decidueye, continuing, "And this is my Decidueye, Basil. We didn't anticipate company. It has been a long time since I have been skating and wanted some space to practice, is all." She indicated her torn stockings with a smile.[break][break]
Then her blue eyes flickered towards the skates in Klaus's hands. "It appears great minds think alike. Were you also hoping to skate here alone?"[break]

Wrapped up in his own little world Klaus had, indeed, missed Elisabeth's skating. His magenta-rose gaze flicks towards the torn stocking in question while his fingers idly worry the laces of his skates. "Hi. Hey," the man offers awkwardly again, his hand lifting to wave ambiguously at either Elisabeth or Basil.

Klaus then rubs at the back of his neck as she shakes his head. "Oh. Naw. Um. I used to come here with my cousins when I was a kid." His hand then shifts to allow him to jab his thumb back in the direction he came from while he explains, "They live back that way. I'm off work for the week and figured screw it, visit some family."

"You uh - want me to leave," Klaus offers, his face yet a brilliant scarlet in the moonlight. The young man winces all of a sudden when his music shifts to a new song and blasts the air with the colourful lyrics of "Fuck you and your mom!" Scrambling to pull out his phone, Klaus fumbles multiple times before he manages to stop the music, a softly groaned "Oh my god" filling the silence as he stares hard at his phone to avoid looking at Elisabeth directly.

[attr="class","tctext"]Basil's head tilted at Elisabeth incredulously as the offensive music blared from Klaus's headphones, interrupting the otherwise picturesque winter scenery. A few other Flying-type Pokemon, in fact, had scattered at the loud burst of "FUCK YOU," which Klaus hastily silenced with a perfectly scarlet look on his face.[break][break]
Even for someone as normally calm and composed as Elisabeth, that was unexpected.[break][break]
So it should come as no surprise that her reaction was equally unexpected: Elisabeth laughed. Not just any laugh, but a full-bodied one, rich with good humour as she doubled over. "My goodness," she said, attempting to gather herself as she wiped her eyes, "you are not having much luck today, are you?"[break][break]
Basil was a far less sympathetic audience, directing his gaze skyward in disbelief that such clownish antics had warranted such a reaction from his typically poised mistress. [break][break]
"Far be it from me to add to your woes," Elisabeth said, her eyes still sparkling with merriment. "Seeing your family sounds lovely. Are you close with them?" A mild pang of longing filled her as she recalled her own, subduing her humour for but a moment before she focused on Klaus, whose face was anxiously buried behind his phone.

Some of the tension evident in Klaus's shoulders eases, as well as his expression, with Elisabeth's laugh. He exhales audibly, his cheeks puffing with the action and breath freezing on the air to briefly obscure his features, and then says with a strained laugh of his own, "Yeah. Yeah... not really."

At the question Klaus cocks his head to the side, a thoughtful expression momentarily colouring his features as he decides his answer. Telling a perfect stranger he didn't have a place to call his own and just bummed with family members during his time off work probably wasn't the best opening gambit, nor most favourable middle game. "Pretty close, sure," Klaus answers ambiguously, his gaze finally lifting from his phone, which he stuffs back into his pocket.

"I'm going to just..." His voice trails off, and he makes a little motion towards his skates before kicking off his shoes to lace them up.

"I work nights usually," Klaus supplies as he tightens the strings and pulls them into a knotted bow. "I swear I'm not some creep who just wanders around in the woods alone in the dark." With that spoken he flashes what he hopes is a charming smile and not a manic or deranged one.

[attr="class","tctext"] Oof, that was a smile, wasn't it? The poor dear was still trying to attempt some sort of bravado. Elisabeth supposed she could indulge him. He'd had such a day, after all.[break][break]
"Certainly not," she said politely. "Working nights must be difficult, though. I hope you get enough rest?" [break][break]Something in his demeanor reminded Elisabeth of Izydor Baranowski -- she wouldn't be surprised if this was yet another young man who seemed absolutely indifferent towards his own health. It brought out the maternal side of her, she mused.[break][break]
Although balancing her sleeping schedule was something Elisabeth herself had struggled with since joining Rocket, truth be told; working a day job and then sneaking out at night to transport cargo was, as her mother might have said, burning the candle at both ends.[break][break]
"Do you have experience skating with a partner?" she continued blithely as Klaus tied up his skates. "It's a small pond, but there's room enough for two."[break][break]
She extended a hand in offering while Basil continued to roll his eyes into oblivion.

At the question Klaus gives a little wobble of his head, his gaze not lifting as he muses, "I mean, I guess? Probably?" Then, with a touch more conviction in his voice, Klaus assures Elisabeth, "I get enough sleep." Finally satisfied his skates are going nowhere, he stands from the tree stump and sways unsteadily as he finds his balance; unthinkingly he gives Elisabeth a double thumbs-up at his success as well as a beaming grin.

"Oh, yeah," Klaus answers with a wave of his hand, asserting, "We'd have like four of us on the ice at a time." For emphasis of his words he taps the tip of his skate's blade onto the frozen water, a small chunk of ice chipping away with the action - it would, indeed prove not to be Klaus's night. As he sets his skate back onto the ice, the blade summarily slips out from underneath him, sending the young man toppling flat onto his back.

Wheezing and winded, Klaus lies there unmoving, tears stinging at his eyes from the pain. "I'm fine," he gasps breathlessly, "just gunna - I'm fine." Seeing stars both literally and figuratively Klaus pointedly stares straight ahead to avoid looking at his audience.

"Beautiful view," he wheezes out unconvincingly. "Definitely recommend. Dunno why I didn't try this earlier."

[attr="class","tctext"] Stifling a laugh behind her gloved hand, Elisabeth reached for the young man lying prone on the ice. "You might find skating a little easier upright," she teased, taking his hand in hers as she pulled him up. Without waiting for his reply, she led him in a twirling waltz on the frozen pond.[break][break]
The movements themselves were not inherently fancy, just a gentle back and forth between two ice skaters. Elisabeth's memory had recalled enough of ice skating to accomplish that, at least. Rather than following a partner as she always had in the past, however, this time Elisabeth led; something told her that Klaus could use someone with a little more grace guiding him.[break][break]
Even if he seemed positively allergic to meeting her gaze. "Am I that intimidating that you can't even look at me?" Elisabeth asked, laughter on her lips. "I have already fallen on the ice several times. I wouldn't begrudge you for having the same fate."[break][break]
And perhaps the routine would have continued, were it not for a jealous Basil's not-so-subtle attempt at interrupting matters: the owlish Pokemon let out a loud 'hoot' directly into Klaus's ear to startle the boy as he flew past.[break][break]
Why the Decidueye looked rather smug about it, even, despite Elisabeth's gasp of shocked protest.[break]

Klaus didn't think it was wise to answer the teasing question, instead offering a grunt of pain when he finds his hands pulled to help him stand again; unsteady as a newborn fawn, the young man clings briefly to Elisabeth's forearms as he regains his balance, his magenta-rose eyes wide and desperate. He then finds himself pulled along as a partner for skating, an apologetic, "Oh god," spilling from Klaus's lips as fumbles after Elisabeth - after a few minutes he finally seems to regain his sense of balance.

Looking everywhere but Elisabeth, mostly under the pretence of seeing where his feet are, Klaus winces when he's finally called on it. He forces a too wide on his mouth and hazards in a particularly stilted and graceless come-on, "Your beauty's just that blinding."

Perhaps in punishment for his truly inept flirting, Klaus shrieks at Basil's disapproving hoot in his ear; he summarily falls flat on his back again, his lungs burning as the air escapes them. Groaning lowly, his hand moving to rub at his chest, Klaus requests in a tinny voice, "Please just leave me here to die. It's what I deserve."

[attr="class","tctext"] "Basil! You naughty creature." Elisabeth's stern rebuke shamed the Decidueye into looking away as the woman reached for Klaus. "Oh dear," she said, sighing as she pressed a hand to the boy's forehead. "Are you injured? Say something." [break][break]

Not that his pitiful attempt at flirting earlier was a convincing expression of sanity. Bless him. [break][break]

"You said your family wasn't far from here, right?" Elisabeth continued, ignoring his pleas for death and gesturing for Basil to help her lift Klaus to his feet. This was no small feat in skates, but eventually, the pair got off the ice with the begrudging assistance of the owlish Pokemon. "Let's remove these pesky skates and get you there in one piece. With any luck, there will be a doctor nearby."[break][break]

Oh well. This was one way to break the ice with someone, wasn't it?
