She'd already been the prized wife wasting away in a manor, given pet projects to be distracted. Even back then, she didn't care for that life of idleness and decay; she'd taught herself her new profession behind closed doors, fingers tangled in thorns and vines like a banished princess in some fairy tale she had read years and years ago.[break][break]

THERE IS a long pause of silence at her accusation. stunned? upset? hard to tell. only when he breaks it with more laughter does it become apparent.

“it looks like you’ve caught me red handed. how bold of me to think i could pull the wool over your eyes.”

the creak of his chair bleeds in from the background.

“ah, i suppose so. it’s a bad habit, unfortunately. the world is too nuanced and varied to give blanket answers.”

and it all comes first circle.

“which is why i trust others to personalize things. otherwise, i’d end up playing twenty questions.”
