Cyg was examining the dessert menu with a marked disinterest. There was a sundae on the list for 1,000 dollars. “Did you see this sundae? It’s got edible gold flake in it and it’s listed at a grand. Who the fuck needs a thousand-dollar sundae!” Her voice warped into a slightly angry shriek as she got a little heated. Maybe it was the champagne. She let the menu flop down dramatically. “My father can literally never retire because his employer won’t offer a 401K but some people can spend two grand on a burger and sundae and not blink an eye. The wealth disparity can burn in hell.” [break][break]

Look, Cyg had already spent half the meal debunking the concept of the moral high-ground and saying murder was okay; Elisa probably had a good idea of her thoughts on capitalism. [break][break]

Instead, she selected the more reasonably priced strawberries arnaud-- essentially strawberries and ice-cream in a port wine sauce- listed at 134 dollars. The waiter complimented her taste and mentioned the strawberries were in an excellent season. [break][break]

“I haven’t written anything in a long time,” Cyg said, “but I’ll see what I can drum up. I’m sure I’ve got some old notebook, somewhere.” [break][break]

They’d been at dinner for a couple of hours; the sun was almost fully set and a number of patrons had been seated, eaten, and departed during their time there. Cyg imagined it was only because of the running tab that management hadn’t asked them to vacate the premises-- which was a night and day difference to her and her dad sitting down at the 11 dollar Cici’s Pizza buffet for three hours. “So what’s next for you, Elisa?” Cyg asked, champagne glass in hand, stack of empty plates to her right. “Anything fun?” [break][break]

Which was code for is Rocket having you do anything important yet, because all I got is grunt work.

The relief that washed over Elisabeth as Cygne sneered at the expensive dessert was palpable, resulting in a burst of laughter. "How very Midas of them, eating gold. Seems a waste, really. And a good way to endure indigestion, or worse."[break][break]

Thank Arceus they weren't ordering it.[break][break]

Her blue eyes flickered from the heated flush in Cygne's cheeks to the way her companion's menu was flopped angrily onto the table. "I'll have what she's having," she said coolly to the waiter. "The strawberries arnaud, that is."[break][break]

The mention of Cygne's father and his financial troubles sparked a different reaction in Elisabeth. One of silent understanding and commiseration. "My father was a trusting man," she said softly. "He was better at losing his wealth than keeping it."[break][break]

And hadn't Elisabeth herself been willing to do unspeakable things to help fix that, once upon a time?[break][break]

Cygne seemed like she had been brighter than Elisabeth had been ten years ago, however. More self-assured. Grown up as cynical as a woman twice her age, even. Hadn't made similar life-ending mistakes in her youth, outside perhaps of joining Team Rocket. Not that Elisabeth could fault her that.[break][break]

The dessert arrived, and with it, a conclusion. "As it happens, I am looking for an extra pair of hands at my flower shop," Elisabeth answered nonchalantly, glancing up at Cygne with a gaze more severe than before. "I'm rather old-fashioned in my methods, and it appears it has left me a little short-staffed, particularly regarding certain time-sensitive deliveries."[break][break]

The florist savored her strawberries for a moment, waiting to see if the dangled bait attracted the other woman's interest. At last Elisabeth said, as if the thought had only just occurred to her, "I don't suppose you'd be interested in learning some of my trade? Part-time, of course, as time permits. And I would pay you handsomely."[break][break]

More than the position was worth, Elisabeth quickly resolved. She certainly had the money to, and Cygne would never accept charity unless it was attached to a soulless organization like Rocket or Silph Co. This provided a clean solution to a few messy problems, then.[break][break]

Aside from the fact that she was blatantly offering to teach Cygne the slow, fatal art of poison.

For all that it was touted okay for consumption, gold leaf didn’t seem like the most appetizing thing in the world. It couldn’t possibly taste good, could it? You can smack edible on plenty of things but that didn’t actually make them pleasant to eat. Eh, a puzzle for future Cyg to figure out. [break][break]

Their strawberry desserts came in fancy parfait cups with silvery spoons and Cyg dug right in. It tasted like wine and sugar and a little piece of heaven. “Dads just be like that, I guess,” she said offhand, slightly tipsy and tired from over-eating. The food coma approacheth. [break][break]

Cyg was caught off guard when Elisa brought up her flower shop and mentioned she’d been left a little short-staffed. It took a moment to sink in. She definitely blinked at Elisabeth like an idiot before it clicked. “Oh! Like a job offer!” [break][break]

The finer notes of what Elisabeth was offering were lost on her. She just saw a way to keep busy, make a buck, and hang out with her friend. “I’d be honored. Though, my gardening skills are about as sharp as my baking skills,” Cyg said, wincing a little. “But it’d be nice to get out of Mauville, I think.” Out of her shitty apartment, out of the shitty city. She set her spoon down next to her empty cup. “I’d love to take you up on it.” [break][break]

That Roserade Elisabeth had gotten to befriend her Roselia had been an unmitigated disaster next to her jealous, prissy flower Pokemon. Once an only child, always an only child, Elisabeth supposed. Oh, Primrose.[break][break]

At Cygne's faint protest at her own inexperience, Elisabeth's lips curved into a sly little smile. "You're a fast learner, Cyg. I don't think this will be too much for you. After all, aficionado that you are of the macabre, I'm sure nothing in my little shop of horrors could compare."[break][break]

The fact that Cygne didn't understand the implications of the offer to work with her didn't even occur to Elisabeth, so confident was she in her companion's cleverness and wit.[break][break]

They had stayed so late the little restaurant began to close, the waiter calmly coming over with the check and asking the two ladies if they were ready to pay. Elisabeth's eyes scanned over the document briefly, slowly widening with horror.
