The woods are not a place Mars cares much for visiting, but ironically enough, despite the peace and quiet that can be found at places like these, it’s where his more illicit dealings often lead him. To Petalburg Woods. Or, well, to the hidden smuggling complex that lies beneath a portion of it.

A walk in the woods after being done with work?

Something like that.

Chelsea boots step onto fallen and frost-covered fallen leaves, the crunching for their icy carcases making every step impossible to miss. By his side, the dainty steps of a Sylveon are much quieter, both of them approaching the place where seeds had so very recently been sowed.

Every flower dies. Every seed perishes.

Cefin often had no ulterior motive for being in the woods. He didn't garden often, and he certainly had no secret Petalburg bunker for crime (that we know of...). He did, however, enjoy a nice walk, and sometimes it was just nice to exist in Petalburg woods where so many bug types wandered about. It was a calming place, for him, and reminded him of the brief free time he had during his studies that he'd spend amongst trees.[break][break]

Today, though, the crunch of nearby leaves brings him aware that he's not alone. Never one to worry about meeting others out and about, Cefin stands from the frosted stump he'd positioned himself on and looks to where he hears the footsteps, at a figure partially obscured by the darkness of overhanging boughs.[break][break]

"Hello?" He calls over, a faint smile in his words. "It's a beautiful evening, isn't it?"

Mars certainly hadn’t expected to run into anyone out here, much less this close to the place where his Gracidea seedlings await him, but a voice calls out as they step closer to the small clearing where the seeds had been sowed, and by his side, Achelous tenses. The Sylveon doesn’t trust strangers.

Neither does Mars, but his distrust is one that all too rarely shows itself in plain sight, and when stepping closer to the stump next to which the “stranger” stands, it's with a smile that he returns the greeting.

”Well, this is unexpected.” Amber eyes fall upon Cefin Glynn, holding his gaze. ”Fancy running into you here, Mr. Glynn.”
[break][break]
If anything, his tone marks his own amusement, although if Cefin were to look at the Sylveon, he would find it to be much less entertained.

As the figure steps closer and out of the darker parts of the underbrush, Cefin stands up a little more and a smile stretches across his face.[break][break]

"Ah-! Mr del Mar, this is unexpected indeed. Someone might even say it's fate" He laughs gently, the gentle flapping of his Vivillon heard as it approaches to survey the stranger.[break][break]

"It's good to see you, though, truly. Out for a walk? What an incredibly beautiful partner you have with you"[break][break]

He didn't mention the obvious tension in the aforementioned Sylveon partner, though Cefin was familiar with recognising many forms of potential aggression. It was handy to know them, after all, when you would be spending a lot of time near a wild family that could decide to rip up your tent with you still inside, if they so wanted.[break][break]

Gwynedd, however, forever as calm and unassuming as his trainer, finds another creature of the woods to become interested in. A Dustox, mostly concealed by shadows and leaves, lingers nearby; and the two Lepidoptera dance around one another quizzically for a moment. Cefin offers a pokéball it's way, not wanting to split up the potentially friendship.

Some would probably find it easier to call it a coincidence, maybe even luck, but it has been a long time since Mars last believed in either of these things. What is meant to happen, happens; what is not, is not. It’s all about destiny, but of course, Mars also believes himself capable of having a hand in altering his own fate when he wishes to…

”We’re just passing by, actually. I’d invite you to pet him, but Achelous here isn’t particularly fond of strangers.” It’s then that he gives Cefin a light and easy smile, and upon hearing its name, the Sylveon looks up, ears perking up. If only for a moment, it seems it relax just so slightly, but it’s seconds later that it tenses up again when sensing a Golbat’s presence.

There’s a low growl and a LIGHT SCREEN that provides for cover from an oncoming AIR CUTTER, MOONBLAST then hitting the Golbat with all of its power.

Mars doesn’t even seem surprised, casually throwing a Luxury Ball.

Cefin wasn't much of a believer in luck or destiny, not to any degree of specificity, at least. His own grief, as deeply buried as it was, made it hard to believe in fate. Who's fate would be to die so young? Nonetheless, he smiles, ignoring the faint, plucking sadness in the back of his mind.[break][break]

"Oh, don't you worry. I wouldn't want to intrude on the little one's walk. And--" He watches as the Sylveon decimates some poor innocent Golbat elsewhere "--I wouldn't want to get on his bad side, either" He chuckles a little. "I once spent some time with a family of Umbreon, you know, who had a single Sylveon in their group. Very sweet pokémon." He offers a smile down at Achelous, even if Mars' pokémon's behaviour didn't seem quite so sweet as of yet.[break][break]

"How is work and life, Mr. del Mar? I hope everything is as well as ever."[break][break]

A puff of SLEEP POWDER from the nearby trees suggests that Gwynedd has encountered something a little less friendly than the Dustox he'd been fluttering with, and the gentle thud of a fast-asleep Heracross landing on the path beside them proves the theory. With a little chuckle, Cefin throws another pokéball it's way.

Grief is what causes Achelous to be the way he is. Fear. Distrust. Loneliness. Having been unable to protect his beloved trainer. After all, the Sylveon doesn’t really belong to Mars, but of course he doesn’t bother with letting Cefin Glynn know as much.

”Umbreon, huh? I’m not surprised, it sounds like you really like pokémon.”

Being that he studies them for a living and all.

Just as Mars is about to say something else, the sound of a notification on his phone momentarily distracts him, and after looking at it, he smiles at Cefin.

”It seems like I must get going sooner than I hoped, but we should catch up sometime. See you around, Cefin.”

Cefin has had his own share of grief, his own fear and shame at being unable to help, being unable to protect someone he loved. In another world, maybe, he could have befriended the little Sylveon and related a little bit. But neither knew of the other's pain, and so Cefin simply smiled politely.[break][break]

Mars nearly opens his mouth to speak, but is caught off-guard by some message and quickly begins to leave.
"Ah, of course, work busy as always" He chuckles gently. "See you around"[break][break]

He takes a moment and watches Mars begin to wander away, before moving to follow. "Ah- Martín? I'm sorry to stop you so suddenly, but... ah, here, let me give you my number." He taps it in and looks up, meeting Mars' amber eyes with his own pale blue. "It'll be easier to catch up, that way. Take care"[break][break]

Cefin smiles to himself for a second as he's left alone in the woods once more, at Mars' departure. Silence, for a moment, and then another puff of powder from the trees. With a thud, a poor Skiddo lands out-cold asleep from out of the brush. Cefin laughs, and throws another ball. He really had to keep Gwynedd in his pokéball more often out here.
