Much of his time had been spent in Petalburg as of late. Today's venture in particular brought Derek out to the woods, where he had some work that needed tended to. Many fond memories of this place, as well as the city during his tenure as gym leader filled his head to the brim with nostalgia. It was these very memories, ones he was so very grateful for, that he thought of while planting the seed.

Jonesy, his Sobble, had helped water the soil before leaving to explore the woods that it's trainer seemed so fond of when they entered. He just couldn't shut up about it, apparently. But Hoenn was Hoenn, and, well...

CRACK!!!

The sudden cowl of a space-time distortion overtook the woods with a thunderous clap, yanking the ranger from his sentimental state. "What the f—" Hairs stood up on the back of his neck as he came to the realization what the disruption was. That Jonesy was out there going it alone.

"JONESY, WHERE ARE YOU?! JONESY!!!" Hands that held garden tools dropped them like dead weight, instead clutching two pokeballs that he desperately hoped would help. The look of the woods had changed, and the sounds of hostile pokemon screaming could be heard in the near distance. "You two get ready for a fight! Let's go!"

Scrambling through the varying temporal zones of the woods, the trio came rushing through the brush as if something were on their heels. But it was them who came upon something, rather someone else. A familiar face, though not the one Derek was looking for. "Eris?" It was the little girl who helped save Christmas! And Delibird's back.

Maybe she'd be able to help him save the day once more?

[attr="class","inner-finally"]She doesn't have much good memories associated with these woods, and yet she finds herself wandering it yet again. This time, she's accompanied by a certain Luxray, his tail tightly wound around her arm as he paces through the undergrowth. Though she'd convinced him by saying that they shouldn't let them be cornered by anyone other than themselves, he finds himself subtly regretting to his decision. His hair stands on its ends, his ears twitching as he tries his best to listen out for danger.

But it comes from far beyond, a darkness dripping from the sky as it expands and swallows the earth. In an instant, he's understood what has happened, stretching his claws as he looks to Eris then her pouch. But before he can grunt at her, he hears a voice, tensing up just slightly as he raises his hackles and bares his fangs. At least, until he sees who it is, squinting just slightly as his trainer brushes her hands through his manes.

"Are you looking for something?" There won't be any big smiles on her face, a slight colour of fear creeping into her body as she calls upon a Yanmega and Floatzel. "Thalassa, can you head out and try to find... whatever it is he's looking for? And Ame, scout out for the closest exit or something."

"Yeah, his name is Jonesy...he's my Sobble." Derek replies, doing what he can to catch his breath. The excitement and direness of the situation has gotten the better of him. "He isn't ready to handle his own in something like this." Like a mother worried for his children, he seems to grow impatient the more he talks about it.

"They know what a Sobble looks like, right? Little blue lizard, with a yellow fin on it's head?" Part of him wanted to just send out every pokemon he had to search for them, but if any were to get lost or hurt, it would just make for another search and rescue op.

[break]
Their little exchange is quickly interrupted by the likes of a Sneasler that thinks it has the drop on their party. Randal is quick to deliver a dynamic punch that paralyzes the hostile pokemon before Rasputin sends it flying into the distance with a zen headbutt. "That's one less pokemon Jonesy has to worry about, I guess." But given it was the entirety of Petalburg woods they were talking about, there was no telling just how many dozens of ancient pokemon were showing up.

DEREK HOFFMAN does seem to have every reason to be panicking over the safety and wellbeing of his companion. With her target now identified, Thalassa takes off in a flurry of rain, Swiftly Swimming through the induced downpour and disappearing into the undergrowth.

"We can start searching for an exit first. Thalassa'll probably cover a lot more ground than we can so Jonesy should be fine..." Her trust and faith remains strong even in an environment like this, her hands clutching onto Reiner's mane as he readily Discharges an aura of electricity to keep the weaker mobs from attempting to rush them. "What were you even doing here to begin with? Haven't you been tracking the distortion predictions and stuff?"

"No, not really." The important matter of the day wasn't what was taking place, but what already had. Should she have been the one to happen upon Derek, she'd had found him kneeling at an unmarked grave. One with fresh soil heaping over it. "I've been in a couple of these already, they're no big deal for my pokemon."

But Jonesy, on the other hand, was more like a baby than a pokemon. Though he was stronger than he looked, he barely held confidence in that fact, preferring to run than do battle. Only Derek's encouragement seemed to make the Sobble stand it's ground, and without him...

The only saving grace was that he somehow managed to bump into Eris once again. She really was a child of fortune, at least in his mind. Her timing couldn't have been better unless she'd already managed to pick up Jonesy by the time Derek found her. And that was asking too much.

"Also, the exit is that way." A confident hand points in a direction based on where he was before, and where he ran into Eris. These were his woods, and even though riddled with space-time distortions, he still had knew the cardinal directions. As a ranger and the gym leader of Petalburg once upon a time, nothing could take that from him.

Probably start moving towards the exit, but a roar rumbling through the air interrupts her thoughts. The rustling of bushes gives way to a panicked Buizel cradling a Sobble tight to her chest, her chitters forcing Eris to pull back and climb onto Reiner's back.

"We've got company!"

A Camerupt bursts forth from the foliage, its Magma Armour scorching the branches and leaves as it readily charges for them. And as it lowers its head to the ground, it seens that it might just Bulldoze through the entire party just to get to the wailing Sobble.

"Jonesy!" Derek rushes forward a step before sliding to a halt, realizing the warning just a bit later than he should've. A rogue Camerupt comes flying out of the bush, igniting portions of the foliage it brushed past as it chased their pokemon.

Luckily the Machamp steps out in front of Derek, promptly demonstrating it's incredible STRENGTH by catching the Camerupt. The force of the charge caused it to slide back some, but never enough to lift Randal from his feet. Shifting from pushing to lifting, the four arms gripped the Camerupt like a claw in order to suplex it into the ground.

Derek's Sobble struggles in the Buizel's hold, managing to break free just enough to spew a WATER GUN at the Camerupt as it starts getting up for another go at them. It was enough to delay it's attempt, and with a little more help, maybe even fell the beast.

Wind rushes through the forest with a vicious howl, carrying a vivid storm of colours that surrounds the wild pokemon. In that moment where the Camerupt hesitates, Thalassa pierces through with a Aqua Jet, forcing the creature to stumble and ultimately crumple into a pile.

"Get yourselves together, we need to go!" Grabbing onto Reiner, Eris whistles and recalls her Buizel. The Luxraay is quick to turn, growling as his claws dig into the ground and he sprints off. "Before another one comes along!"

"You heard her!" Derek hopes to get his pokemon into gear as well. Retrieving Jonesy into his pokeball for safety, he hops on the Machamp's back to be carried while the Metagross follows close behind.

Their hasty retreat goes smoothly, the lot of them eventually breaching the outer barrier of the distortion. Derek finds his two pokemon still with him, which allowed him to finally let out a long sigh of relief. "Thanks, Eris."

He wasn't sure how long it might have taken without her help. Or if they would have been able to find Jonesy at all. Derek was comfortable with cardinal directions, but everything looked so different. There was no telling where the Sobble might've tried to hide with it's usual spots out of the mix.

Though, with that said, he couldn't help but wonder. "What were you doing out there, anyway?"
