“Mmmm, don’t short yourself,” he said. “I like to imagine baking is like murder-- you do it once, you qualify. Even if you don’t do it well.” He grinned. He liked Alexandra Briarwood, he decided. She was pleasant company, despite being scary as hell. That was part of the intrigue.

“Thanks, but Mercury did all the work,” Kepler said. “He usually does.” His Scorbunny had a very intense way of approaching life, usually running at a thousand miles-per-hour at every available opportunity (which was whenever he was out) ((which, as Kepler’s preferred partner, was a lot)).

He watched Lex’s teeny, tiny Joltik take down a massive, looming Runerigus and immediately felt small and insignificant in the world.

“Now that was incredible,” he said, gesturing with his mostly empty drink can. “Mercury just… harasses the local wildlife. That was actual skill.”

Case in point: there was a loud sliding sound, like someone dragging a sandbag through dirt, and Mercury pulled across their path pulling an angry Lapras by the hind flippers. One of the Transport Pokemon’s eyes were bruised shut, and it was aiming ice shards at the irritating Scorbunny, who was too fast to hit. Once the Lapras was well in the road, Merc jumped in front of it, bowed and spread his arms in a ta-daaaa motion, then backflipped, Mario-bounced off the shell, and double-kicked it in the head, fast, like hitting a speed bag. The Lapras’ jaw cracked with a painful sound and its long neck dropped to the ground. Kepler winced, and hit it with a Pokeball.

Merc dusted himself off and plunged once more into the undergrowth at the side of the path, on the prowl for more victims.

“Exactly like those things,” Kepler confirmed. Then he frowned, chewing at the inside of his cheek. “It’s-- it’s like Schrodinger’s Meowth. It’s not important till it’s important. The Meowth’s not dead until it’s dead. Yet, it is always important. I don’t know.” He shrugged. “No one cared about it until we discovered Sea Hoenn and the Tree of Life and all those things.”

Keppler was full of surprises, and again the Beasts smiles, “Baking and murder – gotta be honest, I never thought I’d hear those compared but,” she shrugs her shoulders beneath her leather jacket, “Guess it takes a genius,”

Watching the Scorbunny drag a Lapras into her path does give her pause. She tilts her head, inspecting the large dual type before Kepler sucks it into an empty pokeball, “He seems to be fairing well against water-types which is impressive,” Lex would consider it a bit more than ‘harassment’.

Speaking of harassment, The Joltik found itself being harassed by a local Misdreavus that phased in and out of their plane, pulling mischievously at the Joltik’s sensitive fur. One pluck was the ghost’s last mistake. A sharp jolt of electricity traveled up the phantom’s small hand, it’s body seizing before falling towards the dark path. Lex tossed a pokeball at it before it could come to.

Quite honestly, Lex wasn’t listening at that point. She had a pokeball in hand and was tossing it up and down before tucking it into her pocket. Something about a death, and a Meowth, blah blah blah, “I’ll be honest, ya lost me at Meowth, Kepler,” Perhaps before that, at the name. It was not a secret that Lex lacked the same mental astuteness of her partner.

She called him a genius, and even though he knew he was-- Kepler was nothing if not a self-satisfied bastard-- he at least had the grace to color under the praise, tipping his head in a demure attempt of deflection. “Aw, shucks.”

But when the praise came for Mercury, he full on blushed, for real. “He--,” Kep started, then broke off, trying to figure out what he was trying to say. It was a very specific thing, to be a Fire-type who managed well against Water-types; something practiced, something learned.

One of his earliest bullies had a stupid Chewtle and they’d corner Kepler in the alley down the road from his apartment and blast him with ranged Water attacks until his lips turned blue and he was soaked down to his undies. That was when they were younger, before the merciless beatings.

Merc had been a last-minute acquisition to defend against such things, in the future.

“--has practice,” he finally said, pasting on a smile to try and cover up his little trauma faux pas. It became a genuine expression again, passing easily out of the capnographic valley of memory, as he turned to look out at the sunset.

Merc power-spiked another Squirtle into the ground like a footballer celebrating a touchdown. The shell must’ve landed on a rock or something because it gave a mighty crack.

Lex wasn’t paying too close of attention to Keppler’s facial cues – that’s just not her style unless she felt threatened. Not much scared her anymore, especially a rocket grunt. Call it stupidity or confidence, either worked.

“Obviously,” she hummed, reaching down to take the pokeball from the Joltik and tuck it away in her pocket.

“Space?!” that thought piques her attention. Her amber gaze flashes towards Keppler as the Joltik sends out another ELECTROWEB to tangle up a Polteageist. Lex couldn’t imagine a more awful place than space. Why did these Hoennians have to keep messing with forces they aren’t supposed to? It made her job more difficult – and dangerous.

“What the fuck would you wanna go to space?”

Kepler nodded. "Space,” he affirmed. Mercury blitzes a Totodile that's hopped up out of the mud with a double kick, sending him skidding wildly across their path.

“The meteor, for one,” he said, helpfully reminding Lex about the impending end of the world, "among other things.” He stepped over the bruised crocodilian, dropping a Pokeball on top of it as he did so. "The final frontier, you know.”

Yeah, exactly, Keppler made her point for her. Why would they want to go to space to face a meteor? It’s coming to them. Can’t they just blow it to smithereens when it gets here? Again, she’s not the sharpest knife in the set, especially when it came to science. She stays silent though, just giving Keppler a shrug, “Sure, the final frontier,” she kind of understood, but she couldn’t see what exploring space could do for them. Isn’t that how the Ultra Space wars started? She brushes the thought aside for now. She’s discovered convincing scientists to be happy with what they have is a wasted battle.

A quick zap of DISCHARGE from the Joltik is enough to subdue a flopping Seaking. For a moment, Lex considers leaving it there to be picked off be predators. After a brief pause she decides it may be useful currency and she tosses a pokeball at it.

Kep got the feeling that Lex was not as impressed with his amazingly succinct and, frankly, very suave explanation for space exploration. Even moreso he got the feeling that she was impossibly hard to impress.

“It’s about proactivity,” he tried again, realizing he was doing his best Kate Bush impression and trying to run up this really fucking steep hill, “if we can figure out how to stop them from even entering our atmosphere we literally never have to worry about it again. But, like, if we succeed in blowing this one up--,” he was taking a stab that this was her preferred method of dealing with the meteor, but it was a common one, and she seemed the type-- “what if the next one is full of radioactive material that will poison and destroy everything it touches? We can’t exactly blast that one to smithereens.”

They couldn’t really do that to this one, either, which was why the League had that stupidly brilliant plan of warping it to another dimension. Which he was going to have to investigate on his own. Eventually.

He paused to squint into the rapidly dimming light. “At least, that’s my impression of it. Lulu Flint’s mind works in wonderful, mysterious ways. I just do the math.”

Mercury double kicks a Poliwrath into the path, then bounces off the perfect spiral target in the middle of its body, knocking it over. Kepler aims for the same spot with a Pokeball.

“What’s your opinion on the ocean, then? Deep sea exploration. More nonsense?” It’s a good-natured question aimed at making conversation but Kepler is weirdly protective of the deep abyss that is the unexplored sea.

It’s actually fairly east to impress Lex: Don’t do stupid shit. Unfortunately, Lex didn’t see the value in many things that didn’t benefit her or Killian. There, she considered quite a few things ‘stupid’. Fortunately for Kepler, it’s easy to see the benefit she could obtain from taking care of this meteor: she’d live.

Lex agrees with him until he mentions Lulu Flint. She barks out laughter, shaking her head. Lulu is brilliant, but Lex would never admit it. Hatred runs too deep in her veins, “Lulu Flint is a lot of things,” there’s obvious distaste in her voice, it drip with venom as she waves her Joltik off to DISCAHRGE a Dhelmise floating not far off the path, “Wonderful is definitely not one of them,” Lex is petty, suspicious, and untrusting, “If Lulu is involved, count me out,” she didn’t need to give the woman a reason to permanently dispose of her by willingly entering into some nonsense experiment with space, “That goes for deep sea exploration too,” she points a finger at Kepler, a warning of sorts to keep her name out of whatever crazy plans they happened to be cooking in that lab of theirs.

The Beast may have tossed the pokeball a little too hard towards the fallen Dhelmise, releasing a bit of frustration she has on the subject.

Maybe Lex was just… different, from what Kepler was used to. Mega throwback to the days when meatheads with more muscles than brains used to shove his head in toilets and split his lip over his tendency to mouth off.
