FERNANDO SAYS NOTHING while elisabeth unveils her line of thinking. when she finishes she’s met with a firm “mhm’ of agreement.

but he draws it back with as light-hearted of a tone as he can carry (which, isn’t too impressive but betrays expectations, considering the source).

“but there is still understanding someone at face value. if i had a dollar for everyone time someone was surprised i don’t live in a mansion or own a yacht, i could probably afford one.”

There was a brief moment of surprise that registered on Elisabeth's face, faint although fleeting -- was she that unused to being agreed with on this particular point? Invisible to the phone's receiver, however, this only manifested as a second of ordinary silence.

When the new topic arose, she changed directions willingly. Especially since her opinions on the matter were very defined.

"Mansions are run by entire households of staff. There is utterly no privacy. Living in one might as well be living in a drafty fishbowl with absurd levels of upkeep." A tiny scoff inserted itself. "As for yachts, they are wildly impractical. Especially during the rainy season. I think those that envy both are more interested in status and prestige, than in actual comfort."

Although the entire conversation had been fairly personable, a mild shift in Elisabeth's tone presented itself -- relaxing, like the uncoiling of a knot.

"I am far happier living alone in my little cottage, I think. I imagine you feel similarly about your residence?"

a bell chimes and someone says ‘thank you’ in the background.

“no problem,” comes loud and clear but the context points it at someone else. “have a good night.”

there’s the static of shuffling and movement but his voice comes out after a mild disturbance.

“whichever is closer, truthfully. they’re identical enough that i can’t tell the difference.”

Her cadence was playful, the words pleasantly spoken, as she toyed with the question as if it were a ringlet of her hair.

"I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to find out soon enough." A laugh, genuine in its sweetness, accompanied her farewell: "Goodnight, Fernando."
