it's not unusual for rockets to find themselves on various tasks, including being employed by outside agencies. it is of course, a little strange, that given Adrian Malcolm rank that he accompanies jayden on this particular venture.

[break][break] though jayden takes it as opportunity to properly greet his superior — after all, though only mildly acquainted, it's obvious that changes have already been adrift since their time together at the hoenn star tournament.

[break][break] he reaches into his phone, texting the number that he had been given.

[break][break] 'i have the shipment here out back.'

[break][break] in the shady recesses of slateport's night market, jayden nods at the personnel that load the eggs into the truck. they're to deliver it to the sub's interior — what rocket, or walsh, plans to do with them jayden has no idea.

While navigating the streets he's able to get a sense of the surrounding businesses, and how many eyes are out there watching.[break][break]

It's expected they'll be able to finish up without a hitch. They've got a solid cover operation, and nobody should be suspicious of an overabundance of eggs, but it never hurt to be cautious. At least not that he'd ever known it to.[break][break]

'almost there. seen any lookers?'

Adrian can only hope not to be misunderstood; he hopes to gain an idea of whether they feel the op is already compromised. Any signs of outside surveillance, one passersby too many with a lingering gaze; that is what he is asking after. But in the event the network is being monitored by an algorithm, he avoids any key words he thinks might set off some spook's software...[break][break]

Arriving at the rear end of the building's truck depot, he manages to spot Jayden. Finishing the last drag of a cigarette and flicking it into the gravel, he stamps it out with his heel, grinding his foot against the loose gravel before making his way over to them.[break][break]

"So, is everything ready here?"[break][break]

Adrian does not concern himself with the meticulous planning and execution because of any professionalism, but rather a vested interest in keeping up his public image. Whether Jayden noticed anything will ultimately determine whether he feels comfortable carrying on with the op, but that wasn't to say he really had a choice.[break][break]

The Magby at his side is restless, though it keeps close to Adrian. While it hasn't exactly been trained, it has grown to place great trust in him as a trainer. It kept itself closeby, and he could feel the heat radiating off its flame body.

in the shadiest part of slateport, there are always people watching. unwanted lurkers are never an uncommon sight around these parts. that being said, there isn't anyone that is of concern — at least for now.

[break][break] two teenagers about twenty feet off. none of interest, yet.

[break][break] on the way in, there had been teenagers lurking in an alleyway. jayden hadn't paid any mind to them, considering that it was not exactly uncommon to see youth loitering at this time of the night.

[break][break] he looks up when Adrian Malcolm appears.

[break][break] "yes, sir." he looks up, and sure enough, everything seems to be loaded appropriately into the truck. moonlight bleeds onto the both of them, as if a gentle reminder that the clock is ticking.

He is able to muster, at least, that they are not significantly gifted. Not that he expected anything else.[break][break]

It only reinforced Jayden's determinations.[break][break]

"Are you ready to head out?"[break][break]

Adrian meant to drive if Jayden was less inclined, while having Magby stationed in the back, keeping guard over the eggs. Its FLAME BODY would keep them stable, and he had a few other reasons to pick this pokemon. Despite appearances, he believed it wholly capable of the mission ahead, even considering direct League interference.[break][break]

Not that he was expecting any tonight. Once he secured them, Adrian clambered up through the driver side door, planting himself in the seat before turning the key over once. The engine sputtered to life like clockwork, and he began to reminisce about his time drag racing with Senon at his side. Adrian prayed this would be nothing like that.[break][break]

With little else to say between them, Adrian found himself counting the moments spent in relative silence.

the last of the shipment gets loaded onto the truck, and jayden nods at the worker who loads them into it. "thank you, cheren."

[break][break] the man was someone who accompanied jayden on quite a few of their shipment missions and while not technically a rocket, was quite implicit in many of their activities. he was an invaluable asset.

[break][break] though, of course, not so invaluable that he couldn't be discarded should something go wrong.

[break][break] "yes sir," he says once more, as adrian asks if they are ready to depart. jayden is not so much inclined not to drive as he is inclined to follow the steps of his superior, especially in a mission like this. he climbs into the side door, securing the lock, as the vehicle's engine roars to life.

[break][break] jayden glances backwards once at the other's magby and their boxes of shipments, just to make sure everything was also secure, before looking forward. he gives a subtle nod — and they're off.

Wary glances into the rear view mirrors went unanswered, and after a time he assumed they were in the clear, if only for the moment. Another mile or so up the road, Adrian finally breaks his own silence.[break][break]

But not before finding himself halfway through lighting a cigarette, stopping short of striking the flint.[break][break]

"Do you mind?" He brandishes the nail for his coffin emphatically, which reeks of being mentholated.[break][break]

While they're conversating, a set of headlights appear behind them, though whether it's a cause for concern remains to be discovered.[break][break]

These weren't Rangers, or League Officers. A rival crime syndicate? A disgruntled victim? It's not like it matters to him a great deal.[break][break]

"Magby, open the back doors, will ya?"[break][break]

He seems calm, but then, Adrian really doesn't have a stake in this business. If they shoot up all the eggs, it's no skin off his bones since he didn't stand to make a profit to begin with. This was all Team Rocket's gains, and his heart wasn't exactly in the work. That said... Bringing guns into it did complicate his feelings. He wants to meet them in force.[break][break]

Adrian doesn't ease up on the gas until they reach a single lane turn off from the highway, which helped keep these crazy gun-toting hijackers from pulling up beside them. In the back of their vehicle, Magby eventually figures out the door—except it's locked from the outside. Duh, should've thought of that, he ruminates for a moment.[break][break]

"Magby, burn a small hole in the door..." It just needed to be enough to fit its mouth through, and surely enough Magby did just that; leaning close to the metal door, its puckered beak burned with EMBERS that gradually degraded the metal until a sizable hole was left in the exterior. Meanwhile, the jackasses behind them were trying to make holes of their own, though mostly only leaving dents. Eventually the metal would wear away though...[break][break]

"Now send out a smokescreen for as long as you can," Adrian demanded as they approach a split in the roadway up ahead: He was hoping to ditch them somewhere and lose some heat. Whether it was enough on its own...[break][break]

Well, it was a start at least.

the sounds of gunshots fire in the distance as their perpetrators attempt to make bullet holes in the doorframe. it's an amazing thing that Adrian Malcolm doesn't lose focus, but it shouldn't be surprising. at least, it isn't to jayden, who knows that the other man would not have been made a beast for nothing.

[break][break] a sharp whistle under his breath calls two of his ghosts - who have been lingering in the area outside the truck - to the window. "assist magby."

[break][break] surely enough, his dragapult is the first to strike. alongside the fire-type's smokescreen, vahagn shoots out from the side. his DRAGON DARTS are flung towards the opposing vehicle, their shouts muffled, as his chandelure follows up with a SMOG.

[break][break] to adrian, jayden points. "we can take that exit, and then go down main. there's a shortcut if we take the corner street — it'll get them off our tail."

Taking the slight 'detour' they'd manage to elude their pursuers, though he wondered why they resorted to firearms and not their own pokemon. Perhaps there was more to that little ruse...?[break][break]

Or they just lacked the patience to train their own.[break][break]

"Good thinking," Adrian mouths quietly while they follow the shortcut, finally allowing himself to ease off some of that tension that had built up in him so suddenly. It wasn't the first time disaster struck, nor would it be the last, but by now he was conditioned to such things. Not that he was immune to his own biology, though.[break][break]

A thudding heartbeat finally settles enough for Adrian to fade into blissful unawareness, and they are well on their way to the destination. With at least most of the eggs presumably intact, they should consider this a win. They'd fared better than the Lilycove shipment some weeks prior; maybe working alone was the problem after all, and not the solution.[break][break]

...Yeah right.[break][break]

Well, he was close to admitting it.
