The Lilycove Museum is, on a typical day, gently abuzz with the quiet susurration of visitors of every age and calling quietly observing the sculptures and artwork displayed within. Today is no different, though some small amount of academic excitement has been generated with the advent of a lecture hall adjacent to one of the galleries having swung its doors open. A small sign has been displayed next to the entryway, reading:

Driscoll himself has long since taken his place at the front of the hall, seated at a small desk next to the lectern and carefully organizing a sheaf of notes with well-practiced motions. A large projection screen has been drawn down for the purpose of the lecture, and although the room is relatively spacious, it is only sparsely populated: a few interested, mature couples congregate in the back, while bespectacled and eager students dot the front rows, rummaging through their bags for notebooks and pencils.

"Hmm," Henry muses lowly, lifting one hand to check his watch clinically. "Two more minutes and we'll begin," he announces quietly to the room, glancing up to survey those present. "As a reminder, per museum policy, photographs and video recording are strictly prohibited, but please feel free to take notes, should you wish."

Aurelie hurried through the lightly populated corridors and galleries of the Lilycove Museum, her cheeks flushed with excitement as she alternately consulted the watch on her wrist and the brochure in her hand for the time and direction to the museum's lecture hall. Normally, she didn't pay much heed to the museum's public lecture series, which generally featured speakers who taught about art, history, or art history. Today's lecture, however, had been irresistible to her as soon as she'd seen the title. What else did a smith deal with all day, after all, but the movement of metal?

Of course, when she'd actually read the introductory blurb, The Movement of Metal, the lecture actually sounded more like it'd focus more on Steel-type Pokemon and their physiology than on metallurgy itself. But Steel-type Pokemon, and whatever made them metaphorically tick, were fascinating as well for Aurelie. Today, she had even brought her own Klinklang with her to the museum, disconnecting it from the grinding machine it usually powered and letting it hover behind her in mid-air so that it too could attend the lecture in a sense.

With about a minute to spare before the lecture was scheduled to begin, the red-haired smith scurried into the lecture hall and found herself a seat in the second row, near the side. She dimly heard the man at the lectern giving a reminder about photography and video recording as she rummaged in her bag for a notepad and pencil. Looking around, Aurelie saw a few of the other students and attendees were also accompanied by Rock- and Steel-type Pokemon, also lurking as unobtrusively as possible around the lecture hall.

She arranged her notepad carefully on her lap and looked up attentively toward the lectern, meeting the bespectacled gaze of the lecturer with a friendly, expectant smile. While this Pokemon lecture wasn't happening in a traditional school—and she and her fellow attendees hardly looked like the little kids that a Ranger or League officer might be training—Aurelie was still looking forward to learning as much as she could. Hopefully, it would still count for something, even if it wasn't pedagogy in the usual academic sense. She held her pencil poised over the empty page, ready to start taking notes.

Henry adjusts his papers with a quick tap on the desk, collating his notes neatly as he glances upward to greet the last few attendees with a nod. No sooner has the minute hand on the clock snapped to the twelve than he nods, gesturing to an aide at the back of the hall who closes the door gently and dims the lights slightly, allowing the projection on the screen to be more visible.

As the man steps up to the lectern, the image that appears on the screen is that of a Metagross, underlaid by the subtitle of the presentation: "The Movement of Metal". Henry offers a bland smile to the assembled crowd, his gaze sliding over those assembled without truly seeming to linger on any one person or pokémon in particular. "Welcome, everyone, and thank you all for coming," he murmurs, his voice gentle, yet resonant enough to be heard even by those in the last row. "With any luck, I'm certain you understand the premise of the lecture: the movement of metal. More specifically, this serves as a broad primer to the nature of Steel-type pokémon and their particular idiosyncracies."

He lifts a small remote control from the lectern and presses a button. The screen advances, the title disappearing and the image of the Metagross overlaid with a series of color-coded circles and lines, representing a rudimentary representation of the various structural and neurological systems in its body.

"It should come as no surprise that, as pokémon, Steel-types must necessarily possess certain systems in order to perambulate, to function. Certainly, they are in all cases more than they simply appear externally. While in most cases respiratory and cardiovascular systems are rendered mostly moot in this particular subcategory, one commonality to all Steel-type pokémon is the existence of a nervous system."

A click of his remote, and most of the colors and diagrams disappear from the drawing of the Metagross save for a network of purple lines converging on a central circle in its main body. "Thus, they are able to move, act, and operate independently, which a piece of metal would naturally be unable to do on its own. This, however, begs a question regarding their physiology: Are they simply living creatures inhabiting what is essentially a suit of armor?"

He looks across the hall, his eyes settling on the flame-haired young woman with the Klinklang. "Miss, what do you suppose?" he inquires, lifting a hand indicating that she should respond.

[attr="class","monbody"]Aurelie nearly jumped out of her chair when the professor at the lectern, Henry Driscoll, unexpectedly turned to address her in the middle of his lecture on Steel-type Pokemon and asked for her thoughts on his current topic. Certainly, some classes and lectures were well-suited to classroom participation and the Socratic method of teaching, like philosophy or ethics, but she wouldn't have predicted that Pokemon physiology would be one of them. To be fair, it had been a few years since her college days listening to teachers drone on about metallurgy, semiconductors, and polymers, but Aurelie couldn't remember any of them asking for her personal suppositions about their field of expertise.

She cleared her throat, aware of the eyes shifting from Professor Driscoll toward her as she wracked her brain for an answer. It was like being in fourth-grade math class all over again and getting called on by the teacher before you'd finished multiplying your fractions. Or being in literature class, when you'd only skimmed the required reading and the teacher asked you to please summarize Chapter Three. At least this time, Aurelie probably wasn't being graded—or so she hoped.

"I...I suppose I've always thought of a Steel-type Pokemon's metal as being like the exoskeleton of a crab or an insect," she answered hesitantly. "So, I guess it is in some ways like being a living creature inside a suit of armor. But the suit of armor is also an important part of their body that gives them support and strength, just like a person's bones and muscles or a lobster's shell.

"Of course," she went on, "the Pokemon's exoskeleton just happens to be made of metal instead of chitin, so it's stronger but also heavier and more rigid. But it's no less 'alive' in the sense that it's part of a living creature. Maybe they even have metal cells in the same way that humans have bone cells to grow and maintain their bones, I don't know."

With a small shudder at the thought, Aurelie added quickly, "After all, it's not as though I've ever taken apart my Pokemon to look and see for sure." Her free hand moved to pat the side of one of her Klinklang's gears in reassurance. Its gently clicking gears paused for a moment as she patted it, turned counterclockwise for a few beats, and then resumed rhythmically rotating clockwise.

Hopefully, she thought, that was a thoughtful enough answer to satisfy him.

Lifting her chin, she looked up at Professor Driscoll and tilted her head inquisitively. "Does that match with your research, Professor? I've only known a handful of Steel-type Pokemon, so I'm sure your experience is much greater than mine."
