"Not particularly, in and of itself," the scientist opines, eyeing the passing Dreepy with a raised eyebrow before it's captured. Shaking his head as though to clear it, he turns his attention back to the other man with a crooked, wry smile. "That is, no more so than anywhere else in Hoenn, I should suspect."

As though to directly undermine his words, a Samurott charges from the shadows of a nearby tunnel with a roar, the barbed spike at its forehead pointed directly at Henry. The man turns in alarm, but before he can react, Eckart inserts himself between his trainer and the charging pokémon, unleashing an OVERDRIVE that sends a wave of electricity surging through the air, rippling through the Samurott's lumbering frame like water and causing its movements to grow erratic until it stumbles, crashing into one side of the tunnel.

Sparing a grateful glance to Eckart, Henry surveys the struggling Samurott with mild curiosity, at length withdrawing a pokeball from his satchel and tossing it toward the larger beast. "You see what I mean. As long as you are competent in dealing with...hm, errant wildlife, you should be in quite decent shape to explore, with the proper provisions."

Straightening his jacket, he turns to Jack with an almost amused tilt of his head. "Meteor Falls is so named - at least the rumor states - due to the notion that meteors once fell to the surface in this location, buried deep within the cave system. They say that if you are brave enough to explore the deeper levels and fortunate enough to keep a wary eye on your surroundings, you might even find a piece of one. Could you imagine?"

Henry draws his coat more tightly about him, the unseasonably cold weather finding him no more acclimated to it than when he first entered the area. Eckart offers scarcely little more comfort, though the fact that, after some distance, the effects of the cold begin to lessen even slightly has the Poison-type grinning a wide, smug smirk at his trainer's back.

After some time has passed, Henry pauses, stamping his boots in the snow to kick off some of the accumulated powder as he surveys his surroundings, finding scarcely any landmarks by which to identify his location. The Delibird popping out of a nearby drift takes him entirely by surprise, and he falls backward into the snow entirely with an undignified yelp, kicking up a spray of fine white powder. He regards the offered gift suspiciously, and Eckart rolls his eyes, accepting the package in his stead and giving it an experimental shake, revealing the jingle of coins within.

Clambering to his feet, Henry dusts himself off vigorously, taking the gift from Eckart and stowing it away in his bag. "I suppose we shall take what we can get, but awfully rude of the damned thing to appear like that. Five miles of nothing in any direction and it wants to hide in a damnable snowbank?"

He has the distinct sense that if Eckart could laugh, he would be doing so at this particular moment in time.

Those imbeciles couldn't find their own posteriors if they had both hands and- "Not at all," Henry supplies smoothly, offering a wry smile that is only perhaps a touch too tight at the edges. "Had a bit of free time on my hands, that's all. Unusual to stumble across a Galarian in these parts," he quips.

While his trainer engages in a bit of song-and-dance on his own, Eckart stifles a yawn, catching the attention of a nearby Girafarig. Sneering, the Toxtricity spits a viscid gob of violet TOXIC goo on the psychic pokemon, following it up with a sharp VENOSHOCK that sends the other pokémon crumpling to the ground, heaving.

"Meteor Falls is rife with fascinating points of interest," Henry continues, gesturing the way Jack had come from. "I haven't ventured much deeper, myself - wouldn't want to end up in more trouble than I care to find my way out of, you understand. Have you seen the Falls themselves?"

"It is not an easy phenomenon to describe, and if you did know how to speak of it appropriately, I daresay you would be better-equipped than myself and many of my colleagues."

He pauses, glancing around, before nodding at length. "It has been quite a journey. I very much doubt a rest would be amiss. I imagine Emile can provide us adequate protection if we go back the way we entered. Do you suppose you're capable, or would you prefer to collect yourself here for a moment?"

No sooner is the question asked than a horrible roar echoes through the tunnel. A Steelix - by far the largest pokémon they've managed to see on this particular jaunt - barrels toward the pair, nearly filling the tunnel with its bulk and moving with the intensity of an oncoming train. Frowning, Henry moves to stand in front of Georgette and her winded Froslass, snarling, "Emile!"

The Chandelure launches itself forward with a shrill screech, unleashing a violet Flame Burst that breaks across the Steelix's face, slowing its advance and sending it thrashing against the wall. Emile spins wildly, hurling orb after orb of violet fire at the enormous beast, who can only roar in protest, great clots of mud spattering against the tunnel floor and walls where it flails.

Taking aim, Henry lobs a pokéball toward the felled Steelix before turning to his companion, glancing about. "Are you alright? I understand if you must catch your breath, but if we encounter many more like that, we may have a slightly difficult time of it."

Fascinated, Henry accepts the crushed bloom with a furrowed brow, frowning at it as though it had managed to offend him personally in some way. So focused is he in identifying the fragile crystalline shell from the organic matter underneath that he doesn't process Tianyu's next statement immediately, only glancing up to the other man after he's finished speaking. When his brain manages to catch up to his body, his jaw drops.

That never happens. He prides himself on his ability to react to the unexpected with the same dispassionate precision he employs in every other aspect of his life. Clearly, it hasn't availed him here.

Collecting himself, he blinks incredulously at Tianyu. "I beg your pardon? You do realize-" he bites off the sentence before it can continue, some primordial part of his brain unwilling to allow him to euthanize this particular gift horse. Instead, he meets Tianyu's amused unflappability with a grudgingly thin smile of his own, exhaling a soft laugh. "That is a remarkably generous offer in remarkably unusual circumstances. I will certainly consider it," he offers, tucking the crushed flower into a specimen bag before stowing both it and his meter in his satchel.

The strange stare-off is broken by a trilling Ambrose, spinning rapidly in the air as he floats over to Henry, agitated. "Confound it, already?" Henry all but growls in frustration, forgetting himself. He glances from Tianyu to the Baltoy, at length offering a bow to the chairman. "Forgive the abrupt departure, but it appears we've a time-sensitive matter to attend to. I look forward to speaking with you at greater length upon our next meeting."

Straightening, he turns and shoots a scowl at Ambrose once his back is to the other man, following the Baltoy as it meanders up the trail toward the main road. Fennekin Pharmaceuticals? Not strictly his forte, and he couldn't quite guess at what Tianyu thinks he's playing at, but at the same time, he can certainly think of worse things.

Henry adjusts his papers with a quick tap on the desk, collating his notes neatly as he glances upward to greet the last few attendees with a nod. No sooner has the minute hand on the clock snapped to the twelve than he nods, gesturing to an aide at the back of the hall who closes the door gently and dims the lights slightly, allowing the projection on the screen to be more visible.

As the man steps up to the lectern, the image that appears on the screen is that of a Metagross, underlaid by the subtitle of the presentation: "The Movement of Metal". Henry offers a bland smile to the assembled crowd, his gaze sliding over those assembled without truly seeming to linger on any one person or pokémon in particular. "Welcome, everyone, and thank you all for coming," he murmurs, his voice gentle, yet resonant enough to be heard even by those in the last row. "With any luck, I'm certain you understand the premise of the lecture: the movement of metal. More specifically, this serves as a broad primer to the nature of Steel-type pokémon and their particular idiosyncracies."

He lifts a small remote control from the lectern and presses a button. The screen advances, the title disappearing and the image of the Metagross overlaid with a series of color-coded circles and lines, representing a rudimentary representation of the various structural and neurological systems in its body.

"It should come as no surprise that, as pokémon, Steel-types must necessarily possess certain systems in order to perambulate, to function. Certainly, they are in all cases more than they simply appear externally. While in most cases respiratory and cardiovascular systems are rendered mostly moot in this particular subcategory, one commonality to all Steel-type pokémon is the existence of a nervous system."

A click of his remote, and most of the colors and diagrams disappear from the drawing of the Metagross save for a network of purple lines converging on a central circle in its main body. "Thus, they are able to move, act, and operate independently, which a piece of metal would naturally be unable to do on its own. This, however, begs a question regarding their physiology: Are they simply living creatures inhabiting what is essentially a suit of armor?"

He looks across the hall, his eyes settling on the flame-haired young woman with the Klinklang. "Miss, what do you suppose?" he inquires, lifting a hand indicating that she should respond.

AN EXERCISE IN FATALITY
Henry Driscoll's curry entry
thread summary: Henry is conducting field tests for one of his more destructive experiments. Zev Harcourt comes to watch for curiosity's sake, more than anything.[break][break]why is it important?: Much of Henry's interaction with other characters so far has been influenced by his public-facing attitude: the bookish researcher who knows an awful lot about a terribly niche subject and who's maybe a little too nerdy for his own good. For the first time in writing, this lets him cut loose in a number of ways, and was really delightful to write - he gets to lecture on a topic he's passionate about without worrying he'll offend someone, and we get to see the kinds of science he's actually up to when he's not having to sanitize it for public discussion or consumption. This, in a number of ways, really solidified for me who he is as a character and what his motivations and passions are. I'm much more excited to continue the trend with other members of Rocket as he attempts to make a name for himself via his research regardless of his standing in the organization itself.

A fluttering Mothim passes by overhead, though the scientist pays it no mind in favor of schooling his features into blankness, turning his head to Zev with a bemused lift of his eyebrows. "I imagine they would, at that," he comments softly.

Turning his attention back to his experiment, he clicks his fingers impatiently. Bram, clambering forward from the edge of the clearing, sets to work dismantling the steel cube with deft movements of his long, snaking tendrils, dismantling it into separate panels that he begins hauling, one by one, into the forest, returning after a moment to collect the next.

"More likely, I should think, that they would continue funding such projects to refine their applicability in certain scenarios. It is my understanding some of these projects have engaged in as many as..." he glances to Eckart, who grins crookedly, flashing numbers with his fingers once more. "One hundred and seven trials," Henry concludes, glancing back to Zev with a hint of a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Crouching down, Henry shoulders his satchel with a grunt, turning about to incline his head toward his erstwhile observer. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, certainly. If nothing else, I daresay your visit has better equipped you to discuss the nature of pokémon more fluently should our paths cross again. Good evening."

As Bram lifts and departs with the remaining panel of the cube, Henry and Eckart vanish into the shadows of the treeline, leaving no indication of their occupation of the area save a small patch of blackened grass and the faintest scent of burned plastic lingering in the air.

Of course the other traveler would choose to engage. Just his luck. Henry glances up at the new arrival, affecting a bemused expression. "Oh, goodness, yes," he murmurs, coming slowly to his feet and brushing off the front of his trousers, dislodging some of the detritus from the rough floor of the tunnel. "Apologies, I didn't expect to meet anyone this far in. My fault for getting distracted, I suppose." he grins abashedly, straightening his jacket.

A lone Ducklett waddles up from the waterside, and Henry glances down at it with some consternation. "Go on, little fellow, I'm not your mother." With a plaintive quack, the Ducklett turns a slow, wobbling about-face and slides back into the water, coasting along out of sight.

He turns his attention back to Jack with a crooked smile, offering his hand in a shake. "Henry Driscoll, at your service. Are you searching for anything in particular, by chance?"
