"...Ah," Henry pronounces. "That is a Magnezone." Unusual, perhaps, to find a pokemon of that caliber in the wild, but not unheard of. With a gesture, the scientist sends Emile swinging forward with intent, streaks of violet fire carving through the air as the Chandelure looses another Flame Burst at the floating metal monster.

"I have a theory regarding the density of steel-type pokemon, and it is my supposition that the minerals that make up particular alloys of different species play a role in the development of their exoskeletons - if you will - in particular," Henry expounds as the Magnezone flips backward through the air from the blow, only to retaliate against Emile with a Tri Attack that the ghost takes the brunt of, sputtering.

Emile's flames flare brighter, and the air around the Magnezone seems to twist in a Hex, the metal plates forming its body heating up as the burn from the Flame Burst is exacerbated. Flailing, it cannot dodge the poke ball that Henry throws in time. "The truly fascinating bit is that many of these alloys are formed of strata from the environment the pokemon was actually born in, and further propagated even if said pokemon is moved immediately following its birth and reared in a completely different climate. Remarkable, don't you think?"

Henry's query has a scant moment to echo off the rock walls before Henry pitches forward with a yelp, clutching his ears as a Durant behind him grinds its forelegs together with a Metal Sound.

Despite his pessimism, Henry allows himself the most minute sighs of relief, air escaping with a low hiss between his lips as he takes in the soothing, floral mist that creeps, catlike, into the surroundings. He approaches the Florges with something like finality, taking up the box and tucking it away with a rare, small smile at the pokemon before him.

"Well, Ambrose, it appears this is our final decision," he murmurs to the Baltoy. It seems the gravity of the situation has lulled even Ambrose, who hovers quietly just beside Henry's shoulder rather than engaging in more typically erratic antics.

"One direction leads to the heart of the maze, the other leads out of it entirely. We've come this far, my friend, but this makes or breaks our little venture." He glances to Ambrose, offering a nod. "You choose."

Ambrose lets out a confused chirrup, drawing back slightly, as if to say "Who, me?" When Driscoll nods that same, exacting nod once more, the Baltoy springs into action, spinning midair like a top with a shrill whistle. Abruptly, he comes to a complete stop, pointing his way down one path in particular.

"Very well," Driscoll murmurs, setting off on the path as Ambrose bobs ahead. "RIGHT it is."

Alighting relatively quickly down the next path, Ambrose appears to do a marginally better job of staying close to his trainer, only briefly flitting away to examine a strange cluster of flora. As the next fork and its steward come into view, the Baltoy lets out a chirrup, bobbing and spinning excitedly through the air to hover this way and that about the Tsareena.

"Ambrose!" Driscoll hisses, causing Ambrose to droop abashedly, returning to the man's side. Henry, for his part, takes the offered box with a nod to the Grass-type pokemon before surveying the split once more.

"Easy to the right, or difficult to the left, Ambrose?" he muses. Hmph. It's hardly a choice at all, really, as when has anything been easy in his life?

He strides to the LEFT, Ambrose blithely bobbing along in his wake.

"I see what you mean," Henry murmurs, squinting at the symbols he can make out beneath the ice. "This could be an Alomomola, if it were turned sideways. Are they meant to be directional, I wonder?"

At her next inquiry, Henry glances to Yoshiro sidelong, sparing only a moment before returning his attention to the engravings. "Pokemon physiology, primarily. It's a bit of a niche subject, but one that interested me quite early on in my career." He gestures at Emile, the Chandelure spinning lazily as he swings back and forth on an invisible fulcrum. "My specialty centers on inorganic pokemon - that is, those that biologically oughtn't exist, but do."

He pauses a moment for her response, then nods distractedly, scuffing away at the ice as he crawls backwards on his knees, apparently following some sort of trail corresponding to how the symbols are positioned. "Well, with any luck there won't be a need for security on this little expedition, but your friend is correct - I've never seen anything quite like this, so even obtaining a knowledge of context would prove enormously beneficial."

From his newest vantage point, he continues scrubbing along an ordinal line, now moving to the left, squinting down at the symbols as he shuffles slowly along. "They're scrawlings, I can't make sense of them, but every so often there's a glyph of a pokemon that appears to continue the line. I can't imagine you could read this entirely right-to-left or up-to-down in a normal sense. Now, this looks like..."

He pauses in his search, crouching down so that his nose is almost touching the surface of the ice, perspiration shining against his brow. Reaching into his bag, he withdraws a long, slender icepick that he wields with surprising dexterity, angling it in his hand before driving it point-first into the ice. As the rime around the impact point crackles, it becomes evident that he's driven the pick into a small recess, rather than defacing the entire lithograph.

As though in response, a low rumble shakes the cavern, causing Eckart to jump backward in surprise. Along the far wall of the cavern, the ice on the floor cracks and crumbles before dropping away entirely, rolling with juddering movements down a low stairway that onerously reveals itself, allowing passage to a lower level.

Henry, fallen back on his hands and feet, adjusts his glasses with his free hand, exhaling heavily. "Well, that was unexpected."

Henry rounds a bend in the maze, attempting to chase Ambrose without ever breaking into more than a quick stride and, for the most part, failing. As the Baltoy bounces and twirls heedlessly through the air ahead, offering an excited trill now and again, it seems to dart around and between the sudden flurry of dandelion spores that propagate on the breeze, leaving Henry to catch the brunt of them on his face and person. With a growl of irritation, the man withdraws a handkerchief from an inner pocket of his jacket, holding it over his nose and mouth with one hand as he picks up the pace.

Abruptly, he nearly collides with Ambrose, who in turn bobs excitedly in the air around the Jumpluff, the source of the commotion. Hastily pocketing his handkerchief, Henry accepts the proffered box with an abashed smile and a grateful nod of his head. "Now, Ambrose, you must stay close to me. It wouldn't do for you to get lost in this maze, because it's liable we would be separated for quite some time," Henry chides quietly. He glances to the circuitous path to the left, then the straight path to the right, weighing his options. After a moment, he gently ushers Ambrose to the LEFT, pushing him with a cupped hand and beginning to trek in the same direction with a farewell nod to the Jumpluff.

Henry progresses through the maze at a steady yet resolute pace, Ambrose twirling aimlessly in the air behind him with the occasional trill as a new flower unfurls and blooms adjacent to him. Upon arriving at the next interchange, Henry's posture relaxes marginally as he catches sight of the Lilligant, accepting the box with a perfunctory nod and stowing it in his bag with little care, at this time, for the contents.

He is faced once more with the same dilemma, regarding each divergence of the path with solemn appraisal, only the faintest hint of resentment at his situation furrowing his brow. Neither seems to be a more or less inviting option than the other, but before he can make his choice, Ambrose begins bobbing along the RIGHT path. Muttering a curse under his breath, along with a whisper-shouted, "Ambrose!", Henry breaks into a jog to follow his errant Baltoy.

Chirping brightly, a Baltoy twirls erratically through the air as it bounces to and fro along the entrance to the hedge maze, skirting near to the wall without once actually bumping into it. A few steps behind, Henry follows at a slightly more sedate pace. While the particular appeal of this maze had been much-touted by the locals on his recent foray to Fortree City, his curiosity at the reward thought to rest at the heart of the maze was second to his utter disregard for those countless who had failed already to traverse it.

These sorts of labyrinths are utterly simple to traverse, and he has done so a handful of times in the past. The notion that so many erstwhile contestants had simply failed to penetrate the depths of the hedge maze is laughable to the man, and so he entered with head held high and a slight air of amusement.
[break][break]
Ambrose trills warningly as the entrance to the maze ends abruptly at a fork in the path. "Not to worry, Ambrose. Follow one side of the wall the entire way, and we will eventually reach the center - don't let the paths distract you." No sooner has the confident proclamation left Henry's mouth than the walls of the maze seem to shift and stretch, the boughs and leaves rippling into new configurations among the soft calls of hidden grass-type pokemon.

Of course it won't be that easy. Henry sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose in thought. If his usual tricks will not avail him, he is leaving it essentially to chance and the whims of the pokemon tending the maze. Surveying the path first in one direction, then the other, he grimaces to himself, setting off along the RIGHT pathway.

Henry manages to keep a somewhat bemused sense of neutrality in his expression as he freezes, weathering Amber's rant with only a single, slow blink. "...Are you a celebrity? I'd no idea," he quips coolly, canting his head slightly. Not far behind him, a Toxtricity ascends the hill, the curve of his mouth twisted in a smug smirk as he comes to stand at his trainer's elbow.

"While I imagine we are here for similar purposes, I assure you it is by coincidence only. You needn't invite me to join you simply because you've misread my intentions, nor would I wish to share your company if the proximity of others is likely to induce such anxiety in your responses," Henry replies, sliding his hands into his pockets as he strides past the young woman, the hint of a smile tugging at the edge of his mouth.

"Still," he offers over his shoulder, "I imagine if you did have any uninvited...mm, admirers of your work, you could take care of them with little trouble." Eckart ambles lazily after Henry, turning his head only to stick his long tongue out at Amber mockingly.

The kindling of flame in the Arcanine's mouth is enough to make Henry wince, the dazzling appearance of the surroundings from sudden darkness only further compounded by the notion that the ice all around reflects the fire in myriad pinpoints. Blinking, he glances around with a furrowed brow. Eckart, for his part, merely cants his head, his pupils constricting as a thin, gelatinous film slides horizontally across his eyeballs from the corners of his eyelids.

"Is that...hm, something beneath?" Henry releases his hold on the strap of Torao's harness to crouch down, attempting to get a better look through the thick layering of ice. "I can't make out the carvings, but it does lend credence to the notion that something is, potentially, here." He stands carefully, unclipping a pokeball from his belt and tossing it to release a Chandelure that hovers in the air with a low whistle. "I'm not familiar with this area, particularly - a significant portion of my research tends to be focused nearer the centre of the region," Henry continues.

"Still, it's rather obvious that someone's missed something, or else it's long gone. Melt through, or press forward?" He inquires, glancing to Yoshiro with a raised eyebrow.
