An inquisitive chirp scales up through two octaves from nearby, followed almost immediately by an exasperated huff. "Yes, but why?"

Henry, absorbed in his work, crouches near the edge of a spray of crystalline buds that have by all accounts burst up from the ground of their own accord. About his shoulders, a small Baltoy twirls with barely-contained energy, evidently the source of the strange chimes before. In one hand, the scientist holds a small black box with a silver point jutting sharply from one end - a jeweler's implement, one used to nominally test the density of stones.

He carefully cradles a cerulean-hued bloom in one long-fingered hand, pressing the implement to the spherical bud at its core and frowning as the device flashes a green light and offers a small beep in assent. "These test like -diamonds-, Ambrose. How the devil were they able to grow petals?"

So caught up in his analysis is he that he is unlikely to notice any approaching source of interruption. Ambrose, however, has other ideas, and upon catching sight of the other man and his Ninetales, the Baltoy offers another wavering chirp, causing Henry's head to snap around in irritation. "Ambrose!" he snaps sharply. "Now wh- ah," he trails off, catching sight of Tianyu and rising to his feet with a quiet grunt of exertion.

"Pardon," he recovers smoothly, canting his head to one side curiously. "I rather didn't expect company this far out."

Terribly unexpected, Henry has to reflect as he comes slowly to his feet, eyeing the revealed staircase with equal parts fascination and trepidation. He gestures for Emile to go ahead of him, the purple flames of the Chandelure casting guttering light on the surroundings as he and Eckart follow, bringing up the rear of their little expedition.

His quiet observation as he and Yoshiro descend the staircase is broken by the resultant and all-too-obvious click of a pressure plate activating. Any interest he had in reviewing the newly-discovered etchings is quickly overwritten by a sudden and primal chill down his spine as the distant rumbling grows closer and closer. "Of course there are traps. Why wouldn't there be traps?" he snarls in a rare moment of lacking composure.

He recalls Eckart to his pokeball with a quick flick of his wrist, the Toxtricity's eyes widening in alarm before he vanishes in a flare of crimson light. Emile, for his part, turns toward the source of the rumbling - down one of the many long, intersecting passages beneath the cavern above - and fires a Flame Burst down the length of the passage. It explodes, flaring, against an enormous spherical boulder currently hurtling toward the pair of erstwhile explorers.

Without thinking, he turns on his heel, grabbing Yoshiro's wrist and hauling her bodily in the opposite direction of the boulder.

Henry yelps, tipping forward as the Gliscor bounces off his head, reaching out blindly as though to tug Gigi out of the way of the assailing pokemon, though his arm is nowhere near long enough to preserve the young woman from bearing the brunt of a bat to the face for the second time this trip.

He rises slowly, brushing tunnel dirt from his shoulders and the front of his torso, peering at Gigi unscrupulously. "Twice in one excursion? What luck," he comments. "Do you have some sort of sanctuary for these pokémon, if you are not traveling with them directly?" he inquires blandly.

His question is interrupted by a Sandaconda burrowing up through the stone floor of the tunnel. Emile looses an unearthly screech, violet flames blossoming into view around the Ground-type pokemon as a Hex overtakes it, sending it tumbling insensate back down the hole it emerged from. Henry, for his part, merely lifts an eyebrow as he regards Gigi, curious as to her answer.

Henry's eyebrows go up in surprise as Gigi comes into view, a surprised smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. Admittedly, he hadn't known what to expect with this particular challenge, something of a novelty for him, but it most certainly hadn't been her. "Georgette!"

He returns the hug warmly - or as warmly as he can manage, given his usual stiffness. One finger extends to push his spectacles up the bridge of his nose as he pauses to regard her with a mixture of relief and curiosity. "I am well, yes, thank you. I was in the area for a client, and thought I might see what the Gym Challenge was like. Congratulations are in order, I suppose - I had no idea!"

He observes the smaller woman as she retrieves the bag from the closet, a rueful twist marring the slow smile on his features. "As much as the next person, I fear. Still, I look forward to the challenge - I'm certain it will be one for the books, knowing you."

Frowning at the egg, Henry fights an urge to grimace, or else smash the thing against the ground. Really, the concept of organic life was laughable - full of inconsistencies, subject to random variables and wild upsets at the slightest deviation.

"No trouble at all," Henry groans, nodding his gratitude as he slowly comes to his feet and offering Georgette a wan smile. "I should much rather be a little chilled than have to endure that horrible noise." He glances askance at Emile, as though questioning why the Chandelure did not notice the other threat to his person, but the Chandelure only swings about insouciantly, offering a tinkling series of chirps that resembles laughter.

As the two trainers continue through the tunnel, Henry elects to devote less time to wool-gathering and more to actually paying attention to his environment. Justifiably so, in this instance - he abruptly pauses as they round another bend in the tunnel, pointing up to a shadowed corner of the cave wall where a Ferroseed is firmly embedded into the stone. With a click of his fingers, he sends Emile forward again, a gout of lavender flame dislodging the smaller pokémon and sending it tumbling to the floor, where Henry greets it with a thrown pokéball.

"A little tricky to find, but a fine find nonetheless," he grins gently at his own wordplay. "Ferroseed absorb nutrients from the walls of caves, when they're able to be found," he expounds, relatively certain of his safety at this point.

With a gesture from his trainer, Eckart lopes toward the bird, his elongated limbs lashing out as he unleashes an Overdrive that thrums in the air, blasting the Flying-type pokémon out of sight with a sizzle.

"It is only idle curiosity, you understand," he continues, turning his head to regard the young woman with that same placidly disarming smile, "but one would assume that if you indeed had throngs of - shall we say - fascinated onlookers, would it not be prudent to employ security of some sort? That Umbreon is obviously capable - capable, yes, but obvious."

Henry knew to expect a chill in the air, given the newly-christened Mossdeep Gym Leader's alleged proclivity toward Ice-type pokémon, but he had to admit that things were a little more brisk than even he had anticipated. He slides his hands into the pockets of his grey woollen peacoat meditatively as he enters the gym, casting an assessing glance about the room.

Eckart, for his part, would no doubt be as dispassionately amused about the environs here as anywhere else the pair had traveled; in Henry's experience, the Toxtricity only showed real interest when there was something to maim or pilfer. Still, as Henry's travels took him to a League-sponsored Gym as opposed to some mud-sodden wilderness - at least to begin with - the scientist had thought it best to leave his closest companion to stew in his pokéball a while yet.

"Hallo," he offers to no-one in particular. "Henry Driscoll for what I understand to be a rather numbing non-traditional challenge."

Henry regards Georgette's patient instruction with calculating attention, nodding as he moves to mirror her motions. "The whole leg, I see."

He sets out carefully, one hand remaining on the wall and the other raised cautiously on his left side. A gentle but steady slide of his right leg sends him gliding slowly forward, rather than the clumsy, tentative progress he was making before. He repeats the motion with his left leg, eyebrows lifting slightly behind fogged glasses as though he's realised he hasn't quite lost his balance yet.

While far from representing the greatest of his sins, pride remains a sore spot for Driscoll, and this lesson manages to exemplify the essence of his internal struggle; he desires to know the inner workings of the world - to know everything he possibly can, as a rule - and cannot hide the flush of shame entirely behind his carefully practiced rueful smile, alternately disgusted and furious with himself at showing weakness in anything, much less being unable to negotiate a frozen disc of ice without the assistance of this slip of a thing.

Approaching a bend in the wall, he carefully digs the tip of his skate into the ice, arresting his forward movement enough that he can angle the tips of his boots together, coming to a functional, if stuttering halt. "Gracious," he murmurs with a grin, "I think it's much easier when you're able to watch someone else do it!"
