Sootopolis weighed heavy on his mind.

Barnaby had lost too many Pokémon that day. Seen too many awful things.

NECROZMA's power had been unlike anything he had witnessed before; it tore through droves of opposition as if it were nothing. So much blood spilt - and for what?

It was a question that lingered in his mind as he strode down Route 112.

With his weekend off, Barnaby figured he'd travel to Lavaridge Town and inspect the nearby areas for new Pokémon, maybe even treat himself to a nice soak in the hot springs afterwards. Something to distract him in the wake of such a terrible event.

Asher was walking towards Lavaridge town for his second job. Well, his first one was in the off season, so they didn't need him necessarily. Though they still gave him plenty of food to last a while. The homeless teen sighed as he trekked towards the town. Hot springs were the name of the town, basically. It was their major industry. And he was an attendent, and helped out a lot around the place. Luckily, he had to be there early for cleaning and training if needed. He didn't need any. Bones was next to him as per usual. These hikes sometimes had wild pokemon come at him. Bones had ground-type moves, so that always helped keep them away. Also, since he was a ghost, fighting types often had issues with him too. So here he was...aside from his Pokemon, all alone...far as he was aware.

From where he stood on the path, Barnaby could see a FLETCHINDER flying in the sky above him, close enough that it's distinct features were easily recognizable. He already owned two TALONFLAME, but had quite a fondness for the Scorching Pokémon - so why not capture another?

"Colombe," He began, releasing one of the aforementioned TALONFLAME. "Bring that one closer."

The unusually-colored raptor did as instructed, arching in the air so as to corral the FLETCHINDER down and nearer to her trainer. Given that Colombe was a more dominant evolution of its species, the FLETCHINDER begrudgingly obeyed, eventually perching on a low branch beside Barnaby.

"You'll do nicely." He mused, tossing a Poké Ball toward the smaller bird.

It was then that he heard the crunching of footsteps approaching; looking over his shoulder, Barnaby observed the approaching teenager for a moment before commenting,

"Oh. You look rather familiar."

Asher heard a little bit of commotion. Both him and Bones looked up and saw a Talonflame corralling a Fletchinder lower and nearby. So there was a trainer nearby too. The blazing red head ignored the commotion and just kept going. Only there was a Primeape in the way. Without warning, Bones erupted into green flames, and charged with Flare Blitz. With his Rock Head ability, he wouldn't take any recoil damage. The Alolan Marowak slammed into the fighting type monka and slammed him against the mountainside. He wasn't real interested in fighting types. If anything, he liked dark and fire types. Though for his contests, fire was his go-to. Though Chinny and maybe Noodles would be good as well.

Finding his way to a wooded area, as it happens, where the Talonflame had been corralling that Fletchinder, he stumbled upon the trainer in question. Raising an eyebrow, only places he could think of was at Lilycove's recent contest, Slateport City's lower districts, or was a client at the Lavaridge Hot Springs he worked at. "Unless you remember me at Lilycove's recent contest hall as a spectator, or at Slateport's Lower District, I really shouldn't be. Maybe at one of Lavaridge's Hot Spring hotels that I work at too...but again, if not, then I just look like someone you know." Which would be really odd since his twin brother still lives in Alola. And with that barrier around the island, nothing was leaving or coming in. So he just kept walking on past, with Bones giving the guy the major side eye.

"Uh... no, actually." He gave the teenager a quizzical look.

"You helped me with a job once. At a casino." A ROCKET-affiliated casino. Barnaby wasn't sure if the boy was being purposefully evasive to hide his criminal ties or if he truly did not remember.

It mattered little to him, honestly. They weren't swindling poor saps at the slot machines out here in the wilderness. If he wanted to move on, that was his business.

"I don't think I got your name back then... I'm Bee." Barnaby greeted offhandedly, something at the corner of his eye suddenly drawing his attention to the side. There, he saw a MONFERNO swinging from a branch near the one the FLETCHINDER had just occupied.

"Colombe, strike it down." The raptor obliged immediately, swooping into the air and then slamming into the ape with an aggressive AERIAL ACE.

The guy denied it, and instead mentioned the specific place. The red head stopped and looked at the guy properly. Then it clicked. Eyes widening, doing a short jump and pointing excitedly at the guy. "OH YEAH! You were the distraction as I messed with the machines! Sorry, I legitly forgot about that." Not that it meant that they were friends or anything. Just work colleagues once. The man actually introduced himself as Bee. Soon after, they saw a Monferno, him ordering his Talonflame to take it down. "I'm Ash. And this is Bones." The shiny Alolan Marowak nodded at the guy. Then turning, he was face to face with a Croagunk. After a Shadow Bone to knock it away, the fire and ghost type burst into green flames, and used Flare Blitz against it. After knocking it against a rock, Asher threw a Pokeball at it. That Pokemon could be a good addition to his team.

He couldn't really blame the kid for not remembering. As memories of that night resurfaced, Barnaby vaguely recalled being very tipsy when he'd done the job. Did he even remember the full scope of what happened?

Probably not, but that was unimportant.

"Nice to see you again, Ash."

Just then, a MAKUHITA waddled out from the nearby underbrush, apparently there to avenge his fallen comrade. The MONFERNO was easily bested by Colombe, so Barnaby had no idea why this squat little guy would think he could do any better.

With a nod, he sent his TALONFLAME to take care of the latest opponent, again with her aerial attacks.

"So what brings you all the way out here? On your way to the hot spring?" Barnaby cast a glance toward Lavaridge Town, where he could see plumes of steam rising in the distance.

Another Pokemon came out as besides the Makuhita. A beautiful Salazzle came out, mad at the disturbance. Pointing at the Salazzle, Bones knew what Asher wanted. The Alolan Marowak started with Bonemerang. The salamander twisted around and tried to bite him with Poison Fang. Bones jumped up and started Bone Rush, smacking the female Pokemon around several times, then went into a Double-Edge attack. That seemed to do it, and Asher threw a pokeball. She would be perfect for a Pokemon Contest...hopefully there isn't one so soon, or if there was, it was in Lavaridge Town.

Bee continued with the conversation, asking what brought him out here, further guessing the hot springs. Well, he wasn't wrong. Just maybe not for the correct reason for it. "Yeah, though not necessarily to relax and recharge my batteries. I got a seasonal job with one as an attendant/maintenance etc. Basically whatever needs to be done. Pays better than my other seasonal job, and has better other benefits. Not that I like doing some...questionable jobs, but money is money, and whatever puts food on the table, that's the only reason I do those kinds of jobs." Beyond the hot springs, there was also plenty of out of the way places to practice routines. So even after work and relaxing in the hot springs himself, he could still do a little bit of practice as well.

That was quite a few jobs for such a young person. How old could Ash be... what, fourteen, maybe fifteen?

"Shouldn't you still be in school?" Blunt, but Barnaby was slightly concerned for the teenager speaking so nonchalantly in front of him. Obviously he was apart of ROCKET and taking on questionable tasks for them, but that didn't forgo his education, right?

"Or are you on Summer Break or something?"

While they continued their conversation and after Barnaby secured the MAKUHITA in a Poké Ball, Colombe swooped down and perched on her trainer's shoulder.

Soon enough, however, another wild Pokémon toddled up the road, clanging scales announcing it's presence well before it came into view: a KOMMO-O. Feeling his TALONFLAME may not be as well-suited for this fight, Barnaby instead released his FLORGES.

Ever-dignified, Sylvie appeared on the scene with a flourish of pink petals. She surveyed the dragon before her through unimpressed, half-lidded eyes.

"Moonblast, love. That should easily deal with it." And with a x4 damage bonus, so it did.

Ash looked at the man questioningly. Really? Since when did anyone care if he was supposed to be in school? Only way he would be able to go was if he was put in the system...and that was not going to happen. He shook his head. "Shitty parents and evil twin drove me from home. Even if it's a struggle to survive, it's still better than back there. What's it to ya'?" He gave the blonde a side eye. He didn't mind telling people his backstory, but he was usually selective. Considering the guy was shady as well, he figured he was fairly safe in that regard. Then the clanging scales actually made his spine straighten up. Looking behind him, he saw it. A Kommo-O! "I thought those were only found in Alola, what's a wild one doing here?!" A Machop was behind it too, an attendant of some sort? Well whatever the case, after Barnaby took care of it, and captured it, the other fighting type ran off.
