In hindsight, he really shouldn't have in town stayed so late.

Locke adjusted the collar of his shirt, trying to find some relief from the muggy summer night as he wandered aimlessly down the boardwalk. All his usual spots were occupied by drunks and out-of-towners, and he didn't even bother checking the Pokémon center-even if this wasn't already the region's biggest city, the festival ensured there wouldn't be any vacancies tonight.

A Rotom phone buzzed impatiently beside them, closing the motel search page briefly to give their trainer a tired scowl, which Locke returned with a gesture to their open-and empty-wallet. "We can't," they repeated, "Even if any of the cheapest ones had room, we couldn't afford it."

As much as the League had tried to use the festivities to reassure the region's populace, Hoenn's current fishbowl situation had still hit the courier's already-pitiful finances hard. At least the meteor won't be a problem when they starve to death first.

"We'll just set camp up on the beach somewhere. S'not the worst place we've ever slept."

And if the cops asked, they could just play it off like they were tourists or something.

[break][break] the weeks following Felix Gallagher altercation with a certain aerial champion, jayden had done a deep-dive. while CERBERUS ultimate goal was Katherine Fairburne and MATIAS SILPH, that didn't mean that it was restricted to them. when felix had told him all that had happened on that fateful morning, jayden knew that he had to follow-up. after all, where there was one, there would likely be another.

[break][break] he obtains the poisons from elijah gardner; whatever can be used to assist in the mission will be useful.

[break][break] jayden learns of Locke Jamison through the means that are available through public networks. that is to say, not much information is available at all. which is also why he must do this.

[break][break] as the league civilian sits on the shores of slateport beach, jayden sticks to the shadows. his wig and mask fit snugly on his face as he hides within the backdrop, crouched behind an abandoned vendor. it is dark and quiet enough that no one notices any different.

[break][break] from the skies, his dragapult soars through the skies and drops a series of dragon darts, which explode on the sand the moment they hit the ground.

Roto-Roto's face was suddenly replaced with a bright yellow screen sporting a large exclamation point-before the phone exploded.

Later, Locke would mourn the loss of their only current means of contacting their family-but right now they had seconds to react. They threw their hands over their head, projectiles cutting into their arms as they ducked behind into cover of the raised boardwalk. They chanced a glance upwards as the first pass ended, but were unable to adjust to the darkness fast enough to identify their attacker.

Their Rotom, however, buzzed overhead, having Substituted the device for its own life, while the Porygon-Z left behind also emerged from the shattered remnants-much to its unwilling roommate's annoyance. Chunks of data, glowing with a pink Fairy aura, floated after the dazed Pory-Pory as its digital body Converted into physical form beside them.

"Wh-What's going on?!" he cried into open air, "Somebody help!"

- Rotom Substitutes the phone in place of its own body (half health)
- Porygon-Z appears from the bits of broken phone after using Conversion 2 to turn itself into a Fairy-type
- Locke uses the boardwalk for cover while shouting for help

the phone shatters to the ground, the data splattering along with it. an unfortunate consequence; maybe one day he would be able to investigate or ask Lulu Flint if there was a way to recover lost data.

[break][break] as Locke Jamison cries to the open air, there would be no answer. no one to save him.

[break][break] after all, that is the result of wandering around in the dark. many cityfolk had already gone away to hide in their houses, squirreling away into somewhere safe and untouched by rocket. ever since the reveal of rocket at the assembly over a year ago, a handful of civilians likely already understood the pressure that their region was under. with each release of HBS and HNN by the likes of BARNABY FINCH or PENELOPE LIVY , more and more would know the glories of rocket.

[break][break] his dragapult circles the skies, unforgiving in his entourage of dragon darts. bullets rain down from the sky, very much in the same way bombs exploded along cinnebar's bloody shores.

[break][break] the sand darkens to black as INFESTATION litters the ground in which Locke Jamison stands. shadow worms crawl out from beneath the wood.

It took a few more shouts and another hail of Dragon Darts for the reality of the situation to finally sink in. Despair coiled around Locke's heart like an Ekans, the same that had first gripped them in a classroom in Vermilion, and again on a lone bench here in Slateport years ago.

No one was coming.

They were alone.

Their mind kicked into fight or flight, and in the absence of the latter defaulted to the former.

"Pory-Pory! Turn the tables on them!"

The Porygon-Z made a strange amalgamation of sounds that the courier could only assume was an affirmative, as pixelated walls began to piece themselves together in a wide area along the beach, encasing the makeshift battlefield in a shimmering blue Trick Room before glitching out of sight. Roto-Roto zipped around in the air, testing out their new speed while waiting for the next pass.

Taking advantage of the change in the battle's pace, Locke reached into his bag to retrieve a Pokémon better suited for escape-only to wrench his hand back as he felt something bite it. Worms-planted, he now realized, by what he had assumed were stray shots-covered the underside of the satchel, a few having made their way over the top to fall inside.

One hung loosely from the back of his hand, which he tore away and thrust aside along with his bag. However, as he tried to push himself away from the still-writhing mass on the ground where it was, he felt another sharp bite in his left leg.

Then another.

And another.

A swarm of ink-black worms-no, leeches-had taken hold of Locke's boot, and was now making its way up his foreleg, pinning him to the sand as unseen fangs dug into his skin.

Roto-Roto, for their previous passive-aggressiveness, responded to their trainer's pained shout in an instant. The streetlights above sparked and shorted out as they gathered electricity, Discharging it at the bugs that sprouted from the beach-but it did nothing to stop the advancing Infestation.

What little advantage they might've temporarily gained was quickly slipping away as Locke once again fought against his own panic.

mission
- Porygon-Z sets up a Trick Room (1/5 turns)
- Locke tries to get a different Pokémon to escape, but gets Infested
- Rotom attempts to use Discharge on the Infestation, but that's not how that works dummy
- It does cut out any nearby lights though
