Some would assume he would be offended to have his name be called “average” but those people clearly don’t understand the difference that a simple accent makes. Admittedly, he has always disliked it when people call him “Martin” instead of Martín. It’s just so damn boring.

Inevitably, ever since it first appeared in the Unown Report a few months back, every time he says or even sees his friend’s name it rings in his mind, appearing as a perfect depiction of what it’s displayed as in the app. The same thing happens with his own name.

The Inkay is sent to a Luxury Ball’s confines once the sensation passes, and with his new friend gone, Xanthos turns his attention to Johanna and her Drakloak. The dragon tilts his head, and the Dreepy in his horns do so as well.

“Adrian Malcolm ? Like that guy from Teravolt?” Johanna had to ask. Now that the Drakloak had accepted the name she could actually focus on the words that Del Mar offered her.

She gave him a nod as he explained the origin of Xanthos, and while she wasn’t too into linguistics, she had figured it held some significance like that. “Well, it’s certainly a fitting name.” Johanna agreed. There wasn’t much else to it, really.

“So, how long have you had Xanthos?” She asked a rather basic question perhaps. But, hey by keeping the small talk going perhaps he would inadvertently reveal his identity without her ignorance being brought to light.

Meanwhile, the Council of ghost-artists had reached a conclusion they all agreed to disagree. Just in time as a wild Sableye waltzed in ASTONISHING them all through the combined efforts of Shadow Sneak and ASTONISH. It’s Prankster’s nature to bid it to throw a wrench in their machine.

At first the Pokémon there was hesitant, but then it Flattered them into submission only for it to confuse them as it dropped words of wisdom. Art was but a falsehood meant to perpetuate a tyrannical society.

With these words given the roaring flames of debate returned. Ghastly words were exchanged some nice others not so much. Yet all stayed, even the Sableye for they all knew though their opinions differed they were all among kindred spirits.

Does she not know that Adrian Malcolm is also a member of Team Rocket? The thought that some people might assume he had given his Unown Adrian’s name because he really likes Teravolt and their music is hilarious to him – especially considering how far from the truth it is.

He doesn’t explain the real reason for it, because anyone who has access to the Unown Report knows of the relation between Adrian’s name and the Unown. Johanna’s question shows him that she does not. A shame, really.

Just as he says this, the attention of Xanthos’ Dreepy falls upon distant light: a blue flame that suddenly flickers to life nearby. A Litwick? No, a Lampent. Coincidentally, Mars doesn’t have one of those just yet.

He clicks his tongue and the dragon attacks, bringing down the ghost in no time.

“Woah, really?” Johanna looked somewhat amazed, and perhaps even a bit star-struck. While she wouldn’t consider herself Teravolts Nr. 1 fan. Someone had already claimed that title, she did find their music enjoyable enough for them to be on her workout playlist.

Anyhow their conversation moved on. He began to speak of the Hatchery that opened some months back. “Oh yeah, I heard about that. Never got around to checking it out.” She paused. “I heard some of the Pokémon that came out of that Hatchery had some rather peculiar features.” She was of course, completely oblivious to the fact that one such Pokémon was right in front of her.

The Roaring forum was beginning to be an attraction of its own. Ghosts from near and far gently floated to its location. One such Cofagrigus joined the ensemble. Old and wise, its shadowy arms gestured as it joined the chorus of opinions.

But alas its opinion was perhaps more radical than the others. For it believed Ghosts were unable to truly define what art is. All of them being dead made them unable to understand such a living concept. Art was merely for the living to enjoy and for the dead to ponder.

This once more sparked great debate amongst the forum of Ghosts. Some spoke harshly of its opinion while others applauded it for the bravery it took to admit to such opinions. But one thing was coming amongst all the ghosts, they all allowed the Mummy Pokémon to stay, and so it considered doing.

The Hatchery, long gone as it may be, is a place that fills Mars with unease. The more they learn about the strange genetic mutations of the pokémon born from the hatchery’s eggs, the more questions that rise within him. Was the Infinity Energy surge really the only thing to blame for the birth of these Illumina pokémon, those that know Light of Ruin, and everything else? If so, how come they haven’t been able to replicate the results? What did those people do to the eggs? And most important of all: who had been behind it?

He has his suspicions, of course, but he won’t share them with Johanna Joy without a reason.

Instead, he simply smiles, gently scratching under the chin of the Dragapult.

”Xanthos is one of them.” He clarifies for Johanna’s sake. ”There’s a lot of other different pokémon, though.”

Those that can use Shadow moves, Light of Ruin, purification, and of course, those infected with Pokérus. Hell, Mars had even learned that distortion pokémon and variants had been born from some hatchery eggs.

“Oh?” Johanna looked slightly surprised. As she returned her gaze to the Dragapult. She tried to see if there was anything different, besides the shiny coloration. “He is?” She looked at Mars as if she didn’t quite believe him.

“Oh this is going to sound really rude. But, is he one of the special ones or just a regular shiny variation?” Was she perhaps trying to dig deeper into Mars’ pool of knowledge, perhaps? Was she trying to keep this conversation going because she had nothing better to do? Definitely.

Meanwhile at the Ghost Forum.

Opinions were being shared. The gathering ever-growing had attracted yet another member. This one is a Dusknoir. All too eager to share in its sense of art. To it, Art was purpose and duty. To serve those in need, those whose souls could not pass on to the afterlife.

This opinion was taken well by the masses. For they were all lost spirits one way or the other. And so Dusknoir became yet another individual amidst the forum.

”That he is.” Mars confirms, and as if the dragon himself were attempting to prove this, the yellow markings all over his body begin to glow in an intermittent, pulsating manner.

Xanthos’s intent has nothing to do with Johanna, however.

A wild Inkay had drawn the Dragapult’s attention once more, and it’s through their lights that they communicate with each other. Xanthos had learned to do so with Mars’ own hoard of Inkay. So, when the wild Revolving Pokémon glows brighter, so does the Dragapult, entering the ILLUMINA STATE.

Even during the day, his light is almost blinding, and both Mars and the Unown find themselves having to look away.

The Dragapult began to prove just how special it was. Light pulsed in manners befitting communication. Unfortunately, Johanna hadn’t been prepared so she had been looking right into the blinding light for a second too long before she averted her gaze.

She found herself getting dizzy as the flash blinded her. It took a moment before her vision returned, weird spots temporarily covering her vision as her eyes tried to adjust. But when it did, she found that the Drakloak in her arms looked almost worriedly at her. She beamed it a reassuring smile.

It had adjusted surprisingly quickly.

“That’s quite the light it can produce…” Johanna noted returning her gaze towards Martin.

Meanwhile, the Ghost forum was growing to a size where it wouldn’t only be ghosts that were attracted. This time a Medicham approached the forum. Having caught stray thoughts from all the ghosts gathered it approached with caution.

For once the debate halted, as a living creature joined them. Not counting the Mushroom that started it all.

But it didn’t take long before it was posed the same question as everyone else. What is art to you?

To this, it would contemplate the answer. Searching deep within it for a suitable reply. “Art is experience.” The Medicham gave the ghosts a moment to ponder before it continued. “Art is the culmination of all things in life, your choices, your experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Together it all makes up the concept we know as art.”

Some ghosts agreed others did not. But it mattered not, having joined the debate Medicham was now a part of the forum equal to everyone else.

The fact that the Dragapult’s light seems to blind Johanna Joy doesn’t appear to concern the underboss much, nor the pokémon by his side. ’Live and learn’, isn’t that what they say? At least now she knows what ILLUMINA pokémon can do.

There’s a slight smile, and after scratching the Dragapult under its chin one last time, Mars’ attention turns to his wristwatch for a second. Is this the most effective way to spend his time? If he’s going to chat with one of Team Rocket’s grunts at Mount Pyre, he might as well make it worthwhile, right?

Mars looks at her then, and a simple question is asked?

”So, tell me, Joy, what do you think of Mount Pyre? We’ll be fighting near the summit soon enough.”

“Assuming of course that we intent to win.” She was reminded of the meeting at Sootopolis and how there was something peculiar at Littleroot. But she admittedly could not remember which of the two objectives were going to be the diversion.

A childish Phantump floated into the Forum of ghosts and living alike. A lot of the discussed topics flew right over its head. But it noticed something neat having been sculpted by the Golett. And so decided to appreciate the sculpture while letting the adults do all the talking. They had clearly been too preoccupied by their discussion to notice it joining the group.
