He’s asking her about what she likes. It’s the sort of question Fae is used to; the kind she’s often asked in interviews for the sake of her fans. She has grown used to giving honest but generic answers, since too many of the things she used to love have been ruined by people’s attempts to impress her.

She almost gives him a generic answer too, but she chooses not to. Perhaps it’s because the world is ending and she no longer cares for secrets, or perhaps it’s that she’s enjoying the company of this stranger.

”Hm. I really like hiking and all, don’t get me wrong, but if there weren’t any apocalypses to worry about… I’d be looking forward to winter.” She still is, really. Deep down, no matter how much her own fatalism tells her that there’s no way the League’s insane plan will work, she hopes that it will and that they make it to winter. ”I miss skating on wild ice. When the rivers first freeze and the ice is thin? You can see the water below, and it makes some of the most incredible sounds you’ve ever heard. It’s amazing.”

Only a few people know of this hobby of hers. In Hoenn it’s only her manager and Hailee Jacobs.

As she described skating on wild ice, something Gunner had never heard of before, he found himself unable to conjure images of what that might be like. Of course, he knew what ice skating was; he'd watched it plenty of times on television and even attempted it himself last winter. (That endeavor had not ended gracefully.) But what did the woman mean by 'sounds'? He couldn't imagine it.[break][break]

Neither could he imagine the danger. Falling into ice cold water was potentially life threatening. Why risk it? For the thrill?[break][break]

But he wasn't going to deride what pleased her or lecture her about danger.[break][break]

"You're right, it doesn't get very cold normally," he confirmed, nodding. "But strange things happen in this country all the time. Who knows. You might get to skate on wild ice this winter after all."[break][break]

As he spoke, a Deino trudged into view along the hiking trail. Pelleas confronted the wild Pokémon with a sudden SLASH of his claws. Gunner threw a Poké Ball at it.

By her side, Cicero lets out a bark, but it’s not at her that his attention is directed – that much becomes clear soon enough. An Umbreon approaches, small and regal. The Mightyena is overwhelmingly larger, but the smaller Dark type doesn’t seem particularly intimidated. If anything, she’s curious, and it’s carefully that she approaches to greet Cicero.

Gunner merely shrugged. Hoenn being abnormal compared to other regions was nothing new, not for a local like him who had grown up with these experiences and then, later, traveled abroad. He was used to the chaos and uncertainty. Sure, life in another region might have more relative stability, but that place wouldn't be home.[break][break]

"I would probably just work," Gunner replied at the woman's question. It was not the most exciting answer, but he had a simple explanation for it. "Everything I would want to do without the dome are things I can still do with the dome. And the coming apocalypse doesn't stop me from doing them, either."[break][break]

Perhaps it was an unsatisfactory answer for the woman whose name he still hadn't bothered asking for. Perhaps it made him a boring person. But he'd always been that way, and he wasn't going to apologize for it.[break][break]

Fully aware she would ask what exactly Gunner liked to do, he counted his interests on his fingers as he spoke next. "Reading, chess, true crime podcasts, working out at the gym."

Eyebrows raise, forming perfect arches, for it’s far from the answer she expects. When talking about the dome, most people talk about things they’d like to do once it's gone; the things they miss, the places they wish they had gone to, and those they wish to see again. This man, on the other hand, is content.

It gets a laugh out of her.

”Fair enough, I guess Hoennians are as strange as their region.” There’s a smirk tugging at her lips, as if she were entertained. Is it an insult? That’s up to him to decide, but to Fae herself it’s just how things are.

”That’s some interesting variety you got there, though. I had to learn to play chess recently, I don’t think I’m very good at it.” For a role at a certain chess-centric miniseries set in the 80s that people had been obsessed with for a few months. To her, it had mostly been a fun experience. ”You might be onto something with the podcasts, though. I’ve been listening to a bunch ever since the dome showed up.”

She could talk about working out too, but honestly, aside from her fondness for going for hikes, it’s not exactly something she does because she likes it, is it? Especially not at the gym, though she does put the treadmill at her place to work on the daily.

Gunner was far from content, but a foreign woman met by chance encounter did not need to know that. He simply let her laugh and be satisfied with the answer he'd given her.[break][break]

While she chattered on, a Sableye crept out of the surrounding forest and onto the trail. Pelleas took a few steps toward it, wary, defensive. The Sableye approached the Sandslash with his head tilted in curiosity. The two Pokémon seemed to exchange words, with the wild one stealing glances at Gunner. The man watched, patient, expression neutral even as golden eyes keenly observed the interaction.[break][break]

Finally, the Sableye nodded and looked expectantly at Gunner. He opened a Poké Ball and extended it toward the Darkness Pokémon.[break][break]

Turning back to his human companion, Gunner replied, "Chess takes practice, and it's better to play it against many different people. Everyone has their own strategy for winning."[break][break]

On a whim, he checked his watch. Evening approached.[break][break]

He stood. "I should start heading back into town. I promised my parents I'd buy groceries for dinner after my hike."

Once upon a time in Unova’s version of Hollywood, during a shoot, one of the makeup artists assigned to her had told Fae that a man checking his wristwatch constantly is one of the biggest red flags ever. ’It’s like he’s saying he has no time for you.’ had been the claim. What does Fae herself think of it? Well, that it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like she wants this stranger’s time. And yet, for some reason, that memory had come to mind.

As if the metaphorical bell ringing to save her from overthinking all of this, it’s at that moment that she notices the strangest of pokémon flying towards them.
[break][break]
”...What the hell is that?” She squints as if to get a better look at it, and it’s then that she makes the decision to pull herself off the rock where she had been sitting next to Gunner Graves. ”I swear you Hoennians are like magnets for weird. I better get going before that starts saying something about me.”

Is that a joke?
[break][break]
It could be interpreted as much, at least, especially since she turns to give him one last look, and when she does so, a wicked smirk tugs at her lips:

”It’s a shame, you were kind of hot.” Fae feels no real shame, that much is painfully obvious. She then nods towards the unfamiliar bird pokémon. ”You should catch it so you have something cool to show mommy and daddy. See you around, lover boy.”

And with that, she steps away to leave, her Mightyena being quick to follow along with the Umbreon it had befriended. Fae leans down to offer a hand to their new companion, then petting it once before continuing down the path.

Farther along, they approach a stream where a Carvanha swims, and both Cicero and the currently nameless Umbreon are quick to deal with it. She throws a pokéball almost by instinct.

”Ugh… Now I’ll need to find names for you both, don't I?”

Gunner glanced skyward at the woman's exclamation, just in time to see a strange bird Pokémon approach their location from above. He immediately recognized it as a Bombirdier from past trips to Paldea, which brought a frown to his face.[break][break]

The Item Drop Pokémon was not native to Hoenn. What was one doing here? Especially considering the dome had gone up months ago?[break][break]

"Pelleas," was all Gunner said in instruction; his Alolan Sandslash knew just what to do. An ICICLE CRASH smashed into the unsuspecting bird from below, causing it to plummet toward the two humans and their Pokémon. Quickly, Gunner threw a Poké Ball to capture it before it hit the ground.[break][break]

By the time he turned around to reply to the woman, she was gone.[break][break]

"A shame I'm kind of hot, huh?" Gunner murmured to no one in particular. The backhanded compliment didn't faze him. Plenty of his young female colleagues at the law firm giggled and batted their eyelashes at him, hoping to lure him into a relationship — or even just a date. But Gunner was immune.[break][break]

A random comment from a vanished stranger meant little to him, even if she was kind of hot, too.
