[attr="class","skullbody"]No mask (which was the first sign this whole botched job had been a rookie mistake, if you ask Isaac). Didn't look like anyone Isaac had seen on the sub before. He'd admitted his target wasn't Matt, and didn't try to weasel out of capture by saying he was a Rocket.[break][break] If it was somehow a Rocket, he had some Big questions to ask later. But for now, Isaac simply glanced at Matt, then scanned his eyes back and forth. A shake of the head, minus the actual shaking head. Isaac was starting to get good at this.[break][break] But why ruin that illusion for Josh? Maybe if it was Julia Davis, Isaac would have pointed out the oddities. But telling Josh? Especially after what happened? What he had done? Isaac didn't have the heart. And he was right. Rocket never played fair. They couldn't afford to. Especially not with what was brewing.[break][break] Nobody could. If anyone in Hoenn wanted to survive, the fair, no stakes, 6 on 6 had to go out the window. The only rules of war were set by the winners.[break][break] Oh well. At least even with the end knocking, the post-apocalypse looking to be even worse, there was football on TV. Sometimes Isaac loathed bread and circuses. The League seemed to think a big game, yet another Melody Miro song, or even an event as big as the Splashfest could get everyone's minds off of their problems. And you know what the worst part was? It was important. People needed to unplug. But it was a big, expensive way of unplugging, and that was being funded on money that could've gone to Asher Baran not needing to starve on the streets.[break][break] He found his escape. And his escape was in the deepest recesses of the abyss. He had simply traded a prison of harsh ignorance for a prison of comfortable darkness. But Isaac didn't even have his own place, let alone a place for a kid to crash. What was he supposed to do? Tell him to get back to homelessness before he turned into a monster?[break][break] Fighting to ensure this never happened again was his only choice. But how could he, when his attempts at helping only made things worse?[break][break] Right. Names. Assholes. Now Isaac could put two and two together; his secret meeting with Matt in the woods, him, Josh, and Julia's barely-whispered conversation at his gym. He could put a name to the man who had driven Matt away from the Rangers. But which was he? If he had a face to add to the mix, he'd know immediately. Matt had been very . . . blunt and specific about his identifying features. But til then, he was in the dark.[break][break] One of those names, Raziel Beckett, had even been on Rosomontis' list. So, too, had the name of the pop star he had just dismissed as propaganda. To think that this was who she was putting her trust in . . . he had no intentions of acting on it, and yet it still burned a hole in the back of his pocket. There was something about Rosmontis that made him want to believe in her, even as she fought against the odds.[break][break] Same with Eris Halla. Same with Asher. If the dust settled, and he wasn't dead or imprisoned for life, maybe he'd write kids books. It'd be a better life than this.[break][break] But Isaac Merlo didn't know these names, even if Blackjack did. So Isaac Merlo waited patiently for Josh and Matt to discuss their Rangerly matters.
