[break][break] reaching to his belt, he releases his trevenant. jayden is cast in shadow of the elder tree pokemon's sheer height, a blood-red eye rolling to pin boruta maher and his pokemon with it. a SHADOW CLAW flashes out, attempting to tear the aerodactyl from the sky.

he didn’t recognize jayden cross .

”look out!”

thanks to having been startled by the loud bang near the primal point, aerodactyl was wide open to the the trevenant’s shadow claw. it was dragged to the ground with a great thud, dust pluming up around it. as his fossil-type attempted to regain its footing, bo was reaching for his barbaracle’s pokéball, one of a trusted pair he’d had since his rocket days.

”barbaracle, RAZOR SHELL!”

as it left its ball, the dual-type’s claws glowed yellow, then blue, growing until they were like blades and slashing indiscriminately at their foes and the double. in the meantime, aerodactyl took to the air again, CHARGING its METEOR BEAM with the strange power of dangerous space and meteno above.

[attr="class","textarea"] the razor shell cuts through the air with ease, slicing cuts upon jayden and his pokemon's frame. blood is cut beneath his shirt's fabric, causing the admin to wince, but he knows better than to wallow in pain when there is so much on the line.

[break][break] sunlight streams down onto the trevenant's branches just as bombs explode from the sky, threatening to fall upon the charging aerodactyl.

[break][break] jayden's words also call for his mimikyu, who, despite it's small size calls upon the power of the hot heat in the sky. a giga drain grows in front of it. shimmering light in the shape of roots swirl in front of the pokemon, like giant veins that wrap together, before shooting out in a beam towards the barbaracle.

aerodactyl flew evasively around the seed bombs, managing to dodge all but one that clipped its tail; but more fell to impact the barbaracle just as it was struck by the giga drain. a terrifically heavy combo.

however, the barbaracle hid its critical damage skillfully. the way it seemed to shake it off was reminiscent of dirty underground fights pushed to its limits, back in the day when there had been no that’s enough for now.

it was a bluff. it was better than showing weakness, even as it built like a weight against its balance.

bo let it keep going, gold eyes lit up by the METEOR BEAM which ripped down across the ground between them. it was aimed for the trevenant, though its explosive strike was not too contained to reach even further.

another stern command cut through the air.

”STONE EDGE!”

the barbaracle’s palm slammed forcefully against the earth. from the ground, glowing rocks burst upward like a stone henge around the mimikyu and any in its vicinity. suddenly, they rushed inward towards the center, to crush without mercy.

[attr="class","textarea"] the aerodactly is quick despite it's size. seed bombs fall upon open air like an airstrike upon it's citizens, crashing into the earth beneath. something fissures inside jayden's own chest at the memory, reminded of kanto air and blood pooling at his feet.

[break][break] he blinks just in time to see a METEOR BEAM shooting down at his trevenant, who's size in comparison makes him a perfect target of such a charged attack.

[break][break] "PROTECT!"

[break][break] but even as the barrier shimmers up before them, it's a second too late. it only halves the damage of the attack, but the pressure forces both the trevenant and jayden to be knocked back from the blow.

[break][break] spires burst out from the undergrowth in a fierce line, and jayden has to be quick — he scrambles to his feet in a hurry, just nearly avoiding his leg pierced in two.

[break][break] his mimikyu is faster, however. a portal opens up beneath the pokemon, as marena utilizes SHADOW SNEAK and when it re-appears, it's behind the barbaracle, a giant fist coming to crash down upon the other pokemon.

barbaracle was taken by surprise, receiving a strike from the mimikyu’s shadow sneak. the stumble it took might’ve been enough to signal that it was on its way to losing this battle. bo noticed, and yet, he never reached for its pokéball. instead, he kept pushing it.

”FURY CUTTER!”

he knew the barbaracle’s limits like he knew his own. he also knew that desperation was a strong force for such a vicious fighter. four sets of claws lashed towards the mimikyu, fast and ruthless. if it managed to hit in succession, it would only become worse with each increasing strike.

above, aerodactyl’s body glowed like the rocks below had done moments prior, drawing energy from long ago within in its gaping maw. ANCIENT POWER hurled down towards the trevenant. invigorated, stronger, sturdier, it then announced its newly channeled might with a grating roar.

[break][break] only boruta maher had been able to get out.

[break][break] "FURY CUTTER!"

[break][break] but perhaps not all strings could be cut so easily. some were made of thread, and others forged in steel.

[break][break] as the FURY CUTTER stings against the fabric of the mimikyu's cloth, a PAIN SPLIT revebrates around them. and yet, the mimikyu still takes damage after damage, hit after hit. as much as the desperation rings around the barbaracle, marena feels very much the same. rather than releasing it, however, it continues to sing with each consecutive strike, building and building — until it bursts.

[break][break] with the last hit, a DAZZLING GLEAM bursts from the mimikyu in a screech.

[break][break] ancient power rains down upon the trevenant, who roars in pain as it's arms swing blindly in the air in a futile attempt at freedom. SHADOW CLAWS strike through the air, attempting to fell his opponent.

cries of pain fell on ears deafened by experience, conditioning, desensitization. the usual warmth in the captain’s eyes was replaced by cold ruthlessness. with the safety of his home and his kin on the line, his pursuit of victory was unrelenting.

the mimikyu’s dazzling gleam was blinding to all three, aerodactyl, barbaracle and their trainer. bo’s arm came up to shield his eyes. ”barbaracle! stay alert!”

a whistle caught the attention of his aerodactyl above, calling it for back-up—but it had been blinded as well, still trying to recover in the air. the weakened barbaracle swung in the direction it had last seen the mimikyu with a CROSS CHOP, in a desperate effort to continue fighting.

meanwhile, instead of taking a blind shot, aerodactyl opted for AGILITY while its vision slowly began to return—though yanked to the ground again by trevenant’s shadow claws.

bo grit his teeth, silent as he watched his pokémon get back to its feet, powered up and preparing for its next assault. it was hardly done yet.

[attr="class","textarea"] psychopaths and villains could be cruel, but a victim cornered could even be crueler. especially one that was raised without the restraint that most pokemon had — especially one that was raised by a rocket.

[break][break] a double team materializes in the shimmering hue of light, taking advantage of their opponent's blindness. when the cross chop lands, it's on another copy. the illusion vanishes in a whisper of light, just as the mimikyu appears behind the barnacle with unrelenting force. play rough cascades down like a scream.

[break][break] jayden's own gaze is blurry as it settles when the light fades, but he's too distracted by boruta maher and the battle in front of him.

[break][break] "seed bomb!"

[break][break] as the aerodactyl attempts to recover from the previous attack, the trevenant attempts to take advantage of the gap. seed bomb cascades down on them all, though even jayden can tell his pokemon is growing tired. the assault is weaker than it was before.

cross chop came down on the mimikyu’s copy, doing nothing but waste energy. not a moment later, the fairy-type had slipped around barbaracle again, coming down on it with a vicious play rough.

through pluming dust, seed bomb rained down on both of his pokemon, eliciting pained cries. finally, bo threw a the barbaracle's pokeball—only to watch it sharply smacked away in the other direction by a claw. it rolled into chaos.

”hey!”

it wasn’t typically disobedient, but after having defended its trainer against a rocket ambush only weeks prior, perhaps it knew this was its chance for revenge. despite worsening odds, it braced itself.

”barbaracle!”

the dual-type glowed again, giving a gravelly roar before powering all it had into another STONE EDGE. rocks like tombstones jutted from the ground, circling, rushing towards mimikyu again.

making a snap decision, bo tore his glare away from the battle to dart after the runaway ball. on his way, he commanded to the air, ”ROCK SLIDE!”

aerodactyl hurled boulders to roll hazardously towards their foes. with its trainer's back turned, barbaracle didn't let up either.

[attr="class","textarea"] the rocks come barreling towards it like a stampedo of tauros. fear rises in the mimikyu's breadth like no-other, but jayden's voice cuts clear through the mess.

[break][break] "pain split!"

[break][break] a glow surrounds the pokemon as it takes hit after hit, and though it was much less painful than it would be without the attack, it still makes her chest ache. but she knows she cannot give up, not when there is so much on the line. jayden may be softer than other rockets when it comes to his pokemon, but in the end of the day, he is still a rocket — he will do what is needed, whatever is needed, and it is her job to make sure that she helps him along the way.

[break][break] another dazzling gleam explodes from the pokemon to blind her opponent before she rushes forward, green vines spiraling out in the form of giant claws in order to squeeze the life out of her opponent. giga drain comes for the barnacle, merciless.

[break][break] the aerodactyl hurls boulders towards them and it's only in the nick of time that his trevenant is able to put up a barrier to defend him and his trainer, protect shimmering up in a barrier between them. jayden's gaze narrows as he watches boruta maher chase after that pokeball — feeling an odd sense of deja vu, although he isn't sure what.

though his body didn’t move quite like it had as a kid, sports had helped him. his muscles remembered, leaning under a flamethrower as he skid to curl fingers around the runaway pokéball. in an instant, he was pulling himself back through, running back just in time to witness it.

before him, the life of his barbaracle was squeezed from it. he watched it fall, guilt suddenly washing over him. the pokeball was held up to return its lifeless body, silent in their defeat. not a moment later, something else within him exploded like a grenade. with it, another pokéball was thrown angrily.

”heatran! magma storm!”

fire swirled around their opponents, summoned by the hulking legendary that appeared. above, aerodactyl had also become enraged by the loss, its full might delivering a vengeful ancient power on the mimikyu.

[attr="class","textarea"]death hits swiftly, and jayden barely had enough time to react when another beast takes to the scene. the MAGMA STORM comes at full force, and the rocket admin has barely enough time to react to it.

[break][break] the copies swirl in front of them just in time for them to be swallowed in an inferno of fire and heat. the PROTECT that rears up towards them is just in time, to minimize the damage from the legendary attack. still, the shield shatters with the sheer power of the move and jayden grips his pokeballs in hand to return his trevenant as flames threaten to encase it. his mimikyu, unfortunately, is not so lucky as an ANCIENT POWER comes barreling towards them and knocking it up into the sky.

[break][break] jayden knows when there's the proper time to retreat. with a sharp whistle, he calls his dragapult back to him and the pokemon appears with PHANTOM FORCE, sweeping her trainer up under him just as jayden also recalls his mimikyu back to it's ball before irreversible damage is made.

[break][break] a SURF crashes through the area to douse the flames but also to create enough of a distraction for their exit.

[break][break] just before jayden and his pokemon disappear, violet eyes catch those of boruta maher , memorizing him. he was league but jayden could sense that there was something different about him. he was not weak the way everyone else was.

[break][break] rather than be unbreakable, he was already broken.

[break][break] "we'll be back."

[break][break] and then they disappear into the dark.
