there's a gentle knock against the open door of wren rourke 's hospital room a moment before annalise peeks her head in. she enters the room fully once she knows he's awake and in a decent mood, bearing paper bags in one hand. more importantly, she brought ollie morales with her. or maybe he brought her with him — they could argue about it later. [break][break]
she takes in the sight of the cadet resting in bed, the look on her face uncharacteristically sober. it's not fair, the thought comes, you weren't supposed to be at littleroot.
[break][break]
ollie wasn't supposed to be at mt. pyre, either. or tabasco. it's a line of thinking she could get lost in, but the bags, uncomfortably warm against her curled fingers, ground her back in the hospital room.[break][break]
"how are you feeling?" she lifts her arm to better show off the bags she brought with them, colorful and a little greasy around the edges. "we figured you must want something better than, like, hospital food, so we got you this."[break][break]
she can almost make herself sound like her again. the bags are placed on the tray table and a palm is pressed against its edge to gently move it within arm's reach of wren. a cursory look at the logo and, like, five minutes of prior conversation with ollie would be enough for anyone to realize it's from the burger place he likes. the contents of the bags kind of look like she had indecisively ordered half the menu.

"i wasn't super sure what to get you so ollie made some suggestions."

she smiles, softening the weary, sharp hollows of her face.

it had definitely been his idea.

[break][break] after all, when she'd called him to ask how he was doing and he'd been halfway stuffing a wonton into his mouth with his good hand, he was the one who had mentioned that some of his rangers were still recupterating — wren rourke included. and how Eva Morales totally hadn't berated him for sneaking out of the hospital earlier than recommended, all because he hated the stuffy hospital rooms.

[break][break] but he was here anyway.

[break][break] his broken arm still in a careful sling, the captain of evergrande city walks behind their head ranger as they paid ollie's favorite - they were all his favorite - cadet a visit.

[break][break] "yeah, they're to die for," ollie pitches, lips stretched into a grin as he looks down at the bedridden cadet. though he is trying to be as cheerful as he can be, there's only so much he can do at the tension that stretches through the room. the morose reminder of everything that had happened and everything they'd lost. his stomach twists at the thought, before he pushes the memory back. this was about wren not him.

But then again, it’s not like he’s very able-bodied enough right now to do all that much about it, and none of his family could make it to Mauville from Petalburg yet to collect him. His younger sibling tried, insisting they had just received their license and could do it, but Wren didn’t want them to miss school.[break][break]

And really, it was sorta miserable, but also sorta necessary. If the doctor thought they needed to stay for a few days, then he’d stay right there. Even if he feels like he’s slowly going stir crazy with every passing minute that his phone doesn’t light up with any sort of response from Levy Alinsky .[break][break]

So he sleeps (or tries.) He watches videos that @foxglove has posted recently of his Pokémon. He tries to cheer up Salandit, who mostly remains despondent and forlorn without his actual partner.[break][break]

When rescue finally arrives in the form of a knock on his door, the small lizard is tucked up beside him in his bed, his hands smoothing over warm, dark scales. Juno isn’t far off. “Oh, hey guys.” The surprise is evident on his face. “I thought you’d be more nurses.”[break][break]

The sight of ollie morales and annalise henderson does well to bring a smile to his lips, but both of them also look as roughed up as he is. A pang of guilt zips through him— they should be looking after themselves, not checking in on him.[break][break]

It’s still a welcome distraction, though, and so he sits up a little more as they draw closer. “Yeah, I don’t think I can eat hospital peas anymore,” he says with a weak laugh. “Thanks for this. And um, for thinking of me.”[break][break]

At Ollie’s question, he forces his smile to widen. His glance drifted from his captain’s sling to his propped up foot, bandaged and waiting for the cast to be set later. “I’m fine! You know, just waiting for clearance.” He’s not fine, he’s a mess of a million different things inside, but that’s not their problem. He’s not sure if that grin reaches his eyes, though, so he reaches for the bag to peer inside of it, rather than continue watching the other two rangers.[break][break]

“Wow, you really must’ve cleared that burger place out.” The joke feels hollow.[break][break]

annalise glances at ollie morales . it's a look that lasts a split second, but it's long enough to transfer are you for real right now? quirk of her brow. she turns her head back toward wren rourke , her smile small and weary but there.

"please, you don't have to thank us. this is the least we could do."

he insists that he's fine, but she's not all that convinced. she wasn't there at littleroot, but she's read some of the league reports as they've become available, and people don't walk away from events like that unscathed. [break][break]
but if he feels like he's fine, she won't push the subject. [break][break]
"i'm super happy to hear that." a bag crinkles as he reaches over to look at its contents. "i know it sucks right now but, like, i broke my ankle a few months ago and i can tell you that the recovery really wasn't all that bad."

physically, she had mostly recovered from her encounter with Felix Gallagher . she still had some stiffness and an ache that came and went with bad weather, but the worst of her physical trauma was behind her. the mental harm lingers, insidious as slow-acting poison. [break][break]
"yeaaah," she draws out. wren's joke is pretty close to the truth — but at least the restaurant owners got to profit off their indecisiveness. "we went a liiittle overboard on the burgers, but it's fine. take whichever one you want. or, like, whichever ones you want, if you're feeling ambitious."

wren rourke looks so different from the first day they met — on a sunny summer day, where ollie had taught him all the ins-and-outs of being a ranger. he had looked so hopeful and full of life then.

[break][break] now...

[break][break] ollie pushed the thought away. he didn't do well in the dark.

[break][break] he's glad for the distraction of burgers, and the hospital bed creaks as he sets himself on the edge of the bed, pulling out the burgers for the young ranger to see.

[break][break] "hey," ollie huffs, as he looks between them. "you'll see once you get one of the guys in your mouth. they're mouthwatering amazing." as if to prove his point, ollie unwraps a burger with his one good hand (which is a little difficult, given his state of things) but somehow manages before pushing it towards wren's mouth.

He flashes Anna a weak smile, “It’s still appreciated. Kinda sucks being stuck with mostly just my wh thoughts.” Her assumption is obviously right. Who would walk out of what they did with no issues?[break][break]

Still, that’s not their problem. But— “Hey Ollie, I was wondering… is it okay if I take a short leave to rest at home in Petalburg? I think my family would appreciate it. I don’t think I’m much use like this right now anyway.” He scoffs to make light of it, but gold eyes drift sideways toward Anna with knitted brows as she speaks up again.[break][break]

“Oh, you did?” he asks Anna, head at her as he absently reaches for the burger that Ollie has pushed toward him. His fingers curl around the end still wrapped in paper, but he hesitates to take a bite. First, comes a weak laugh, “It's no joke, huh? At least you didn’t have it curb stomped by some guy…”[break][break]

It’s really meant to be lighthearted. Because he has no idea how Anna was injured, but by simple assumption, he figures it was on the job. You know, something a little less combative.[break][break]

Wren doesn’t go into detail—not yet anyway, but the moment has lingered with him. Settled in his mind for the few restful moments he has so that he might snap awake again with heavy breath. His mind warps the memory so that the masked figure doesn’t give him the ‘mercy’ of a broken ankle, in favor of more permanent silencing.[break][break]

Blinking rapidly, he comes back to the room, resolved to explain if it gets pushed, but there’s no way that’s, like, a shared experience. Right..?[break][break]

To fill any potential quiet, he chomps down on the burger. And yeah, it’s way better than the hospital food he’s been subjected to the last few days. Mouth full, he gives them a shaky thumbs up, head nodding.[break][break]

“Might be ambitious, if they’re all this good.” It’s only a maybe, given that his appetite has been sparse since he got back from Littleroot. What happened at both primal points seems to hang heavy like an elephant in the room that is intent on looming, rather than just hanging out in the corner.

[attr="class","annalpostbody"]annalise casts a small, approving glance in ollie morales 's direction as wren rourke asks for a short rest leave in petalburg. she's sure the evergrande captain will miss his cadet, but she has no doubts that he'll agree to it, so she swallows down a reassuring "take all the time you need" to let him handle the matter himself.

while ollie takes a spot on wren's bed to show off his options, annalise opts to drag a chair over, legs squeaking over sanitized tiles. she takes a burger, then perches herself on her seat to try and help him look on the brighter side of his new injury.[break][break]
then, offhandedly, he mentions how his ankle was injured. her expression darkens, but she says nothing at first, lets the crinkle of greasy paper fill the gaps for her instead. [break][break]curb stomped, she repeats in her head. by some guy.
[break][break]
her own experience comes to the forefront of her mind, sharp in clarity. she folds the wrapper back over her burger and sets it on the tray, appetite harried away by the anxiety that washes over her.

"actually," she says once they've eaten a little, once she's sufficiently sucked the mood out of the room with her silence. "something like that happened to me, too. a guy in team rocket tried to shoot me and, when that didn't work, he broke my ankle to stop me from getting away."

it spills from her lips, spoken quickly and wobbling unsteadily at times with emotion. she can't look at ollie morales or wren rourke as she says it, focusing instead on picking at the bandaid wrapped around the last knuckle of her finger. [break][break]"just like you. stomped."
[break][break]
the bandaid starts to peel away unwittingly, strings of white adhesive stretching and snapping. she looks up at wren, face full of grief for their shared experience with team rocket.

"if it's too much, you totally don't have to tell us but — what happened at littleroot, wren? who hurt you?"

ollie is busy eying the bag of burgers, wondering if he should grab one of his own, when wren rourke catches him off-guard.

[break][break] "oh."

[break][break] he isn't sure exactly why it hadn't occurred to him. he's gone through a lot. they all had, but wren was young and new and fresh — and while being thrown onto littleroot all his own hadn't been ollie's idea, it wasn't as if ollie had stopped him either. a trickle of guilt enters his heart at the thought, before ollie flashes a smile and ruffles the boy's hair.

[break][break] "of course, dude. evergrande will be waiting for you whenever you decide to come back."

[break][break] as much as ollie would miss him at the base, a ranger's health came first. he shared a brief look with annalise henderson.

[break][break] not everyone could be as stubborn as ollie when it came to work ethic.

[break][break] as the conversation shifts, the ranger captain stays quiet and allows annalise henderson to speak. she'd gone over the details with him before the meeting, and even hearing it now, churned something uncertain and uncomfortable in his stomach. he didn't like the idea of any of his friends getting hurt, but getting shot?

[break][break] ollie would jump in front of every bullet if he could.

[break][break] green eyes lift towards wren at anna finishes her speech, something determined flashing in his eyes.

[break][break] "yeah," he breathes. "who hurt you?"

[break][break] ollie considered himself a pacifist, for the most part, but when they attacked his friends — his family — that was a different story entirely.

I think it would just help if I could settle some of my family's nerves. Just for a little bit, and if I get restless, I can always see if the Petalburg office needs like...paperwork sorted. "That sounds...really familiar." Almost chillingly so. It sends a shiver darting down the back of his spine as his encounter at Littleroot pushes to the forefront of his mind.[break][break]

"I- I don't know who it was. He was wearing a mask, but.." he trails off and sets the sandwich down on his the tray hovering above his bed. Then he pulls his shirt neck to the side just enough to show the swathe of bandages along the top of his shoulder. "he kind of did the same thing? Shot at me, and then ended up breaking my ankle after, um, wrecking me in battle." A sheepish laugh follows, reluctant to admit his defeat.[break][break]

"He might have finished up the job and shot me again, though, if I hadn't, er-" Normally he wouldn't feel embarrassed admitting this part, his own pacifistic beliefs were earnest enough. But is this the right time? He glances back up to catch the fury in their head ranger's eyes, despite her normal cheeriness.[break][break]

"Well when I found him, he was in rough shape, so I...healed him up? Maybe..?" His glance cuts away, toward the window on the far wall of the room. "But I think I'll take a broken ankle over being shot again.." Sensing the awkwardness he feels, Juno creeps up from the edge of the bed and plops on his lap.
