in the hoenn's harsh winter, both he and Elisabeth Fiorelli appear at the scene of so much terror and trauma from months ago.

[break][break] but this time, they don't appear to raze the town. they don't appear in their VALORANT get-ups — or at least jayden doesn't. he wears nothing more than a simple suit, and the bruises that once bloomed from dialga's attack, is now hidden beneath layers of clothing and gloves. bandages wrap around his mid-waist cover the ribs that scream with protest even as he leans down to observe the crystals imbedded into the earth.

[break][break] "do you think there's any way we can remove this from the earth?"

[break][break] he mulls over the thought. while there were already several samples submitted to their scientists, he was sure it would help their research to find more. even now, as he stands above the ground, he can feel the pulse of energy beneath the earth.

The frigid winds of winter whipped about them both, and Elisabeth buried her face deeper into the scarf she wore as she joined her fellow admin in returning to Littleroot.[break][break]

Part of her struggled to make sense of this -- that the place where so much conflict and bloodshed had occurred had returned to being a sleepy, dormant village that was considered utterly insignificant in Hoenn as a whole.[break][break]

The shadows of Groudon and other devastating Pokémon whispered in the corners of her vision, only to be nothing but snow flurries when she turned to glance their way.[break][break]

Instead, she looked down to what had attracted her companion's attention: to the purpose of their visit in the first place.[break][break]

"I suspect there might be repercussions if we did," Elisabeth admitted, turning her gaze to him. Puffs of breath were expelled with the words, warming the air with her voice. "We don't know how it might react to force."[break][break]

Caution was something she was re-training herself to embrace, a reminder that Lulu Flint had given her not so long ago in the company of the Eternal Flower Floette.[break][break]

"We might have better luck finding shards that have broken off of their own volition."

perhaps if they had been properly alone, or been in the position to secure the perimeter, jayden might have disagreed. repercussion's could occur normally anywhere — with great risk beget even greater reward, after all.

[break][break] but littleroot was no sootopolis, no matter how bryan delarosa had wanted it to be.

[break][break] he pushes himself to his feet, reaching into his pocket to send out a few of his ghost types. they disappear into the air in wisps of shadow, flickering images that disappear as quickly as they reappear. his sable-eye stays closest to him, it's beady eyes attempting to DETECT their surroundings.

[break][break] "thank you, by the way. for your support."

[break][break] he's evasive yet direct — the only way he can be when they don't know who might be listening.

A DEFOG from her Frosmoth's enormous white wings lessened the haze of the snow flurries around them, giving the Ghost-types more visibility in their pursuit. [break][break]

At the Rocket admin's heels was a timid Deerling, likewise bundled in a red scarf that matched Elisabeth's own, that twitched her nose and pawed at the ground as ODOR SLEUTH led her onwards. Peaseblossom's trot was a more leisurely stroll than jayden cross's own Pokémon had taken, idle and curious in its journey.[break][break]

"You're welcome." Her emerald eyes turned to his, somewhat surprised at the acknowledgment. "Is that unusual for you?"[break][break]

Her mouth quirked into the faintest hint of a smile.[break][break]

"Being supported."

[break][break] the question catches him off-guard momentarily. he was used to giving words of gratitude. a life lived under his father's thumb almost uniquely prepared him for it; his position as rocket's pawn, as their tool, meant that it was almost always expected of him.

[break][break] no one had ever asked why. he hadn't.

[break][break] they had all accepted it without question.

[break][break] "i suppose so," he says after a moment, pushing against the primal crystal with the toe of his boot. experimentally. it didn't move. "i am used to being the one who provides support."

[break][break] which might have seemed unusual, given the fact that he was the head of rocket's offensive mantle, but it was what he was used to. though his tenure in rocket had been long, there was a reason that he had escaped so many years by staying in the shadows. it did not surprise him when grunts did not recognize him, or even when upper brass didn't. for years, he had been either his father's tool, or in the shadow of others greater than him.

Peaseblossom's ears perked up as Jayden's foot pushed against the crystal, distracted from her pursuit as she bound over to examine the Primal Crystal herself. A delicate pink tongue surreptitiously attempted to lick it, only to get stuck momentarily after.[break][break]

This, however, was completely unnoticed by the Deerling's trainer as she listened to her fellow admin, tilting her head in silent thought.[break][break]

"Yes and no," she admitted. "I'll admit being used to working alone, myself. I generally assume most people are more social creatures."[break][break]

Her arms wrapped around herself, a slight shiver passing through her as a winter chill descended upon them both. Her least favored season left her bitter, longing for warmer months with lush gardens abloom with flora.[break][break]

It was a time of year where people with close bonds cherished them most.[break][break]

"Being in an organisation like ours has been a shift for me, to be honest. Having people to rely upon."[break][break]

Peaseblossom let out a soft whimper of dismay before successfully breaking herself away from the crystal, falling backwards with a thud into a nearby snowbank.[break][break]

Elisabeth merely stared blankly at her Deerling, visibly questioning why she had chosen this Pokémon for an outing focused on Rocket-business.

he pulls back, glancing towards the florist.

[break][break] "i'm not sure if i would call myself a social creature."

[break][break] in fact, most of his time within rocket was as a nameless face in a crowd. then again, perhaps she meant it differently. he was a pup born in a pack of wolves, forever obliged to follow others whether he liked it or not. in that way, he was a social creature — and in that way, so was all of rocket.

[break][break] he regards Elisabeth Fiorelli with curiosity.

[break][break] it wasn't the the first time that he had heard someone say they were unfamiliar with having to rely on a group. many people functioned as an independent entity before rocket scooped them up. he thinks of people like mint frost or fern delaney, who had been unused to take advantage of rocket's facilities, merely because they had never had them before.

[break][break] "but do you prefer it? or," he asks, glancing down as the deerling fell from it's perch and scuttled against the snow. "do you miss working alone?"

[break][break] his umbreon, who had accompanied him on the adventure, pads upon the soft snow to tend to the fallen deerling. a nose pushes against it's rump, attempting to assist it upright.

A soft, understated chuckle left her lips, fogging the air. "Between you, me, and Felix Gallagher, I think most of us admin are unsociable, then. What a burden to put upon our new fourth member."[break][break]

Although BARNABY FINCH had charisma enough for that Herculean task and then some.[break][break]

There was a twinge of wistfulness in the observation as she tightened her grip around herself, bracing her body against the wind. Blonde hair whipped about her, stinging her eyes with snow flurries.[break][break]

"There are things I miss about being alone, but overall, I think I prefer this. Having others. Having support."[break][break]

It had felt more natural to operate on her own. It had felt less risky, when she had no connections whatsoever upon her arrival in Hoenn. There were no weaknesses to exploit, no ties that could become tangled and messy with expectation and disappointment.[break][break]

"We're all united, I think, in that we are bound in our inherent usefulness. There's a security in that. In understanding someone's relationship to you."[break][break]

She paused here, watching the Umbreon's unexpected assistance as it nudged the Deerling by the rump back to standing. There was such a genuine sweetness to the gesture it took her aback slightly; some part of her had privately doubted her fellow admin's Pokémon capable of such a minor show of compassion.[break][break]

You don't know him very well, was a thought that came to her suddenly, and Elisabeth turned to him, as if truly looking at him for the first time.[break][break]

"But there are times people here have surprised me. And that has not always been unwelcome."

there is a bit of pride in his eyes as he thinks about the two new admins who have risen to their rank.

[break][break] "between the two of them," jayden remarks. "i think they'll pull it together."

[break][break] though he doesn't personally know BARNABY FINCH all that well, the limited interactions they've had make jayden believe in the reporter's prowess. and fern delaney doesn't have to do much to earn jayden's praise, especially in the socializing department. jayden had told it to him once, long ago:

[break][break] 'you don't seem like the type to get lonely.'

[break][break] carefully as they inspect their surroundings for stray crystals, jayden listens to Elisabeth Fiorelli's words and takes them to heart. though it is not something he personally understands, he supposes he can be sympathetic to her plight. it was one of those things that he had missed when rocket had initially disbanded after silas' fall — the thing that he had sorely missed and felt desperately apart from. in some ways, Cillian Quinn had saved him, bringing him back to rocket.

[break][break] in others, he had led him to treacherous ruin.

[break][break] depending on how one thought about it.

[break][break] jayden watches as lada assists the deerling and then continues her search, pawing at the ground. as it turns out, the bump in the earth was merely an unhinged rock. not a shard of a tera-crystal.

[break][break] "surprised?" he echoes, hand in his pocket. "in what way?"

The Deerling shook her head, disoriented, before bounding back to Elisabeth's side. Snow flurried away from the fawn's fur as Peaseblossom shook herself free of the winter chill, and Elisabeth laughed despite herself, startled.[break][break]

It seemed at odds with her stoic demeanor here, a breaking of the porcelain mask.[break][break]

"It's easy to forget that even the monsters have humanity," she conceded, looking at the admin with a small smile. "I think that is what surprises me the most, truth be told. That we can commit great atrocities, but there are kindnesses, too."[break][break]

Was it a foolish thing to admit to? Maybe. Then again, he'd asked what had surprised her, and this had surprised her first and foremost.

A brow arches, even though his expression remains neutral. "Are you calling me a monster, Elisabeth Fiorelli?"

[break][break] While ordinarily, Jayden does not hold the gravitas of others of his station - people like Felix Gallagher who's mere stature granted them more tension in a room than any threat that he could deliver - there was no mistaking that he had been a longstanding member of Rocket. And a former Beast at that.

[break][break] "I suppose I never thought of it that way," he acquiesces, with no shift in his tone, but he does turn his gaze upon the fellow admin. "To me — the things we did, the deeds we committed —"

[break][break] He pauses, as he watches his Umbreon skirt across the snowy tundra, trying to dislodge a shard from the earth.

Ah. So he'd never viewed himself in the way she viewed her own misdeeds.[break][break]

She'd unknowingly insulted him.[break][break]

An uncomfortable silence fell as Elisabeth's gloved hands restlessly worried at her coat, her eyes sliding away from the admin to focus on the blinding snow. Sunlight reflected off the frozen ground, forcing her to blink away its radiance.[break][break]

"I suppose I've always had a harsh view of myself," she said finally, looking up again. Her breath fogged the air as she sighed. "I am not proud of the things I have done in Rocket. Before Rocket, if we are to be frank."[break][break]

Another foolish confession, and one admitted to an acquaintance at best.[break][break]

This was not how an admin should speak, but it was an explanation she felt she owed him, after implying such a thing of his own nature.[break][break]

"It felt as if there was no alternative at the time, but sometimes I wonder. If there's another life I might have lived."[break][break]

A shallow laugh cut through the confession, and she shook her head, blonde curls swirling amidst white snow flurries.[break][break]

Perhaps it was a mark of his own growth that he had been able to speak so boldly to someone like Elisabeth Fiorelli. Despite the fact that (at least for the moment) they held identical rank, it was something that a younger version of himself would have never dared breach.

[break][break] While his expression remained as nonchalant and passive as it usually was, there was a bit of a spark in his eyes as he glanced at her. Almost bemused, as if riddling in on his own joke.

[break][break] The spark switches to curiosity as she refers to a life before Rocket. This was yet something that Jayden had yet to experience, even if he was aware that to many of his comrades - to people like Felix Gallagher and mint frost - it was perfectly normal to have.

[break][break] He presses his lips together in consideration. Pride was not an emotion he felt towards his misdeeds, nor was regret. For him, it was more absolutism than anything else.

[break][break] Jayden tilts his head as he considers her words.

[break][break] "For me, I do not know if it is pride or something else." He pushes his hands into his pockets, cold wind blistering through the air and flapping at his collar. "I was born into Rocket, with parents who had already sworn into it. My fealty towards them - and to Rocket - was absolute. I too was sworn, before I had even a choice in the matter."

[break][break] He blinks.

[break][break] "My fate sealed before I was even born into the world."

[break][break] A moment passes, before a fleeting smile crosses his face.

[break][break] "I do, however, feel pride when I think about Rocket and all we have accomplished. And the fact that I am able to work alongside people like you, Miss Fiorelli."

How alien his experience was to her own.[break][break]

Elisabeth understood what it was to have no free will of her own, to have her life dictated by another's whims. She'd felt no pride, however, for the life she'd lived under such cruel observation and command.[break][break]

Resentment at being owned had clawed beneath her skin, so raw and so red in its fury that it inevitably spilled blood on her hands.[break][break]

And yet, jayden cross said that Rocket's control over him had been absolute. That he'd had no choice. That he'd simply been born to be Rocket, and would die a Rocket.[break][break]

Could you mourn freedom, if you'd never known it in the first place?[break][break]

Did a flower that had never known the sun resent thriving in the darkness, when shadows were all the comfort it had known?[break][break]

"You're right," she said finally, and this time, the words came out stilted for another reason. "We have accomplished much in Rocket, of course. I shouldn't downplay such things with 'what-ifs' and other useless thoughts."[break][break]

Did she pity him, she wondered? Did she pity herself, for unknowingly throwing herself into this pit with him?[break][break]

A quiet resolve settled in her, which she voiced aloud as her Deerling bounded back to nuzzle at her legs.[break][break]

"I don't think anyone gains power without sacrificing something for it. I suppose ultimately we have paid the price of our power, by sacrificing some of our freedoms in the process."
