[break][break] ollie gives willow an apologetic look when she returns. sorry. but he knows better to press her for more information on the subject of her parents.

[break][break] he leans back into the couch, only to sit back up when she grabs his paperwork.

[break][break] "h-hey, wait..!"

[break][break] but it's too late.

[break][break] "ow..." he whines, but knows it's futile. she's already got her claws in the paperwork.

[break][break] "okay! but listen! you don't get it, wils. the stuff they made me do in there. the horror."

[break][break] of sitting still. of doing nothing.

[break][break] "ugh.. fine." he crosses his arms with a pout, only wincing once he does so.

[break][break] "okay, everything but that last one. i'm definitely going to kick his butt."

[break][break] he juts his bottom lip out stubbornly, wearing that look for a moment before it softens.

[break][break] "thanks, wils."

"i know exactly what they did, ollie. they told you that you can't leave! and that you certainly can't go back in the field!" her words are more chiding than they are angry because at this point, the threats have been made and ollie has already conceded. she gets up and off the couch so she can go around him, gently pull his arms down so he's not hurting himself, and then presses a light kiss to his forehead. 

"of course, ols. you know i'd do anything for you." she draws back and tugs a hair tie off her wrist with her teeth, drawing blonde strands up in a messy ponytail. rather than join him again on the couch, she crosses over to the kitchen and gets to work on prepping dinner. 

it's only a few minutes after, when she's cut up some veggies, that the door under the stairs opens and roman loudly tromps up and into the room. 

"mooooom, i'm hungry and - oh, shit, what happened to you?" he rushes over to ollie, green eyes bright with curiosity. "did you get your ass beat?"

ouch. he winces, and this time it isn't because of any physical pain.

[break][break] it's cause wils is too damn smart.

[break][break] "if i couldn't leave," he says with a huff. "why would they discharge me?"

[break][break] because he'd waved Eva Morales's name in the air. because he'd charmed them with a good smile and easy words and didn't give them a reason to think that he'd be the rebellious ranger captain that he clearly was. that willow atkins knew he was.

[break][break] when she reaches for him, pulling his arms down, he sighs. her lips brush against his forehead and it's like turning a robot off — he concedes, knowing that there's little he can do to argue against his best friend.

[break][break] rather than following her into the kitchen, he decides to lean back against the couch. he sinks into it's soft, pillowy embrace, eyes fluttering shut. only for a moment, before there's a familiar voice calling for him. he blinks, bright emerald flashing open, to look at the kid that's racing towards him. a brilliant grin spreads his lips, face naturally lighting up.

[break][break] ollie laughs and leans forward, arms folding over his knees.

[break][break] "hey! what makes you think i didn't beat them up, kid?"

[break][break] he tweaks roman's nose goodnaturedly.

[break][break] "would you believe me," he whispers conspiratorially. "if i said i saw palkia."

Roman stepped back, swatting at Ollie's hand. "Keep your mitts off my nose, dude." What did he take Roman for, a baby or something?

Nose twisting aside, Roman squinted at the man, pausing to consider his words before scoffing. "I'd call you a liar. No way you saw a Pokemon like that." adults needed to pick more believable lies to tell. Not every kid was a gullible fool that ate up whatever was said to them.

Roman walked over to his mom to inspect what she was cooking. "Ew, is that broccoli? Can't we have something else?"

roman wastes no time bringing out the barbs, but to be fair, ollie's tone warranted it. she really hasn't had time to sit ols down and tell him what she's been researching since roman's therapy started. she hasn't really had time to do much these days. isn't that just the way though?

"i don't know, ro. ollie doesn't really lie." she throws a look over her shoulder, eyes narrowing, given the state he's currently in on her couch. 

she sighs at the exclamation and shifts over to the fridge. "i was going to toss a salad too. you can eat more of that if you don't want broccoli.

"and be nice to ollie. he's almost broken. and he's going to be staying here until he gets better."

he blinks at ro's snappy comeback, but it isn't like ollie hasn't hung around with temperamental tweens before. in fact, once upon a time, he'd been one. so he can understand, just a bit.

[break][break] "sorry, bud," he says again, and is nearly tempted to ruffle his hair. but instead he thinks better of it, keeps his hands to himself, and remarks:

[break][break] "your mum's right. i'm not a liar." he just - you know - twisted the truth a little bit. but this, he wasn't lying about.

[break][break] "it even hit me."

[break][break] he lifts his shirt up a bit, where there are bandages wrapped around his waist.

[break][break] as roman complains about dinner, and willow tempers him as all good mothers do, ollie leans back a bit before he folds his arm over his stomach. he leans forward, giving a lopsided smile.

[break][break] "sorry bud," he says again, but this time sounds genuine about it. "looks like you'll have me as a roommate for a bit."

[break][break] "anything i can do to make it up to you?"
