Mars’ favourite thing about Casino Starlight has always been the view. In one of the luxurious private rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows display Sootopolis City’s skyline in all of its glory – beautiful, even when lacking the Tree of Life that had once been as iconic as it had been symbolic.

”It’s been one hell of a night, huh?” A smile comes easily when giving the Rocket-controlled city one last glance, his attention then turning to the one person for whom he had come all the way to Sootopolis after much celebration. BARNABY FINCH, obviously. There’s no one else Mars would rather spend these moments with, so they had agreed to meet here; to toast the New Year together when the clock strikes midnight.

”Have you tried the Galaxies yet? Tequila’s not usually my thing, but they’re pretty damn good.” On the table, the cocktails rest on coasters; blue and red, like distant space. Mars, however, does not reach for them. He reaches for Barnaby instead; a hand finding its way to his lover's waist.

There were perks to dating a casino owner. Barnaby was currently indulging in one of the better ones. On arguably the craziest night of the year, when people all across Hoenn were partying and ringing in the New Year, he was cozied up in a VIP room with none other than Martín del Mar.

"It has. I can't tell you how many bar fights I saw start tonight."

The casino's signature cocktail of the night, the Galaxy, sat on a table across from them on the couch; like Mars, Barnaby didn't immediately reach for the drink. In fact, he was trying to sober up a little so he could at least remember the start of 2023.

"I haven't tried them yet, but I will in a moment." There were more stimulating things than alcohol happening, anyway, to which Barnaby wanted to give his full attention.

"There's something else I'd rather taste first." Where Mars pulled him in, whispering sweet compliments in his ear, Barnaby leaned even further until their bodies were pressed together side by side. His head dipped to Mars' neck where he left trails of soft kisses from the crook of his ear to the base of his throat.

Paldean by blood and by name, there are unsurprisingly a plethora of traditions associated with New Years that Mars has been exposed to over the years. From eating grapes or lentils at midnight to exchanging kisses and placing golden rings in champagne glasses, he has seen it all, and although most of those traditions had been abandoned when renouncing the Marzán name, there are some he doesn’t see as bad at all…

Unfortunately for BARNABY FINCH, it’s still a few minutes too early for midnight kisses, and as they both know, Mars is oh so terribly patient when it suits him to be as much.

”Trésor.” He laughs softly, cherishing each and every kiss. The hand that had been at Barnaby’s waist moves up to his chest, then gently yet firmly grabbing his chin to make those cobalt eyes look up into his. ”We wouldn’t want to miss the start of the year, would we?”

The question is rhetorical, as made clear by the smirk at his lips. He knows Barnaby will whine, but he also knows that despite all his whining, Barnaby loves not getting his way. When it comes to this, at least. Definitely not when it comes to everything else.

”I have a question for you, actually.”

An eyebrow is raised, the mystery being as purposeful as ever. They're still as close as before and he does not let go even for a second.

Barnaby's confidence had never felt as high as it did when he was in the company of Martín del Mar. It got the better of him sometimes, though, especially when his lover decided to play games of chicken.

How long could Barnaby last before begging on his knees? That seemed to be one of Mars' favorites.

Here it was no different. Just as he'd slipped his hand in between the buttons of Mars' dress shirt, a tugging force on his chin pulled him away.

"Booo. You're no fun." Nothing could be farther from the truth, but a little pouting seemed to be in order nonetheless.

His chin still held in place by Martín del Mar's hand, Barnaby looked up at him with a mischievous glint in his blue eyes.

"Fiiiine. What's your question, then?"

If Mars were to give BARNABY FINCH exactly what he wants, when he wants it, then his lover would no doubt be incredibly pleased. However, amazing as instant gratification can be, pleasure of such kind can often be short-lived, and as Barnaby would well know, pleasure may just be Mars' main focus when it comes to this sort of thing...

It's not the reason why he paused, making Barnaby look into his eyes as he is now.

What's the reason, then? Well, the fact that a new year will begin a few minutes from now...

"I want to ask you to make me a promise." Mars' own gaze — filled with determination as much as it is filled care and joy — is reflected back to him through eyes that shine with mischief. Not once does he look away. Not once does he let go of Barnaby. Never again. "We don't know what will happen this coming year. It will probably be a dangerous one, because they always are, right? So...I want you to promise me that you'll do what you can to stay safe, okay? And, if you have to take risks, which you doubtlessly will, don't keep me in the dark about it. I don't want anything to happen to you, Barnaby. It's always what worries me the most about all this shit that happens in Hoenn."

Apprehension.

Apprehension about the future.

Apprehension about the unknown.

Apprehension about the mere possibility of not being able to protect Barnaby from what may be in store.

This is a small reassurance, a way to bring some peace to his uneasy heart, and nothing more. But, sometimes even small reassurances can change the world.

Oh man, this avenue of conversation sobered him up quick.

In a good way, though. This time last year BARNABY FINCH had no one that would have asked for such assurances, let along someone that even cared enough to spend the New Year with him. How so much could change in such a relatively small amount of time.

"I promise." Spoken with a light, reassuring laugh and followed by breaking away from the other's hold. He knew his partner would release him... especially when it meant he could bestow a sweet kiss to Martín del Mar's forehead. From there Barnaby's lips trailed downward again, from his temple to his cheek and finally ending at Mars' own lips.

Another soft kiss was placed there before he added, "No stupid mistakes. I'll tell you everything there is to know. Whatever you want, you can have."

Anything to temper the constant apprehension that came with their line of work.

Speaking of... this brought to mind his own apprehensions of what was to come in 2023.

"Promise me..." Barnaby trailed off, hesitant to voice his thoughts aloud. "You'll help guide me in my new role? I worry about all the big shoes there are to fill as a Rocket admin."

Would he be able to live up to the expectations and responsibilities placed upon him? Would he be a good leader for those that looked up to him?

Anxiety nibbled at the corners of his confidence.
